Pixel lensing: Microlensing towards M31
Pixel lensing is gravitational microlensing of unresolved stars. The main
target explored up to now has been the nearby galaxy of Andromeda, M31. The
scientific issues of interest are the search for dark matter in form of compact
halo objects, the study of the characteristics of the luminous lens and source
populations and the possibility of detecting extra-solar (and extra-galactic)
planets. In the present work we intend to give an updated overview of the

One Loop Renormalizability of Spontaneously Broken Gauge Theory with a Product of Gauge Groups on Noncommutative Spacetime: the U(1) x U(1) Case
A generalization of the standard electroweak model to noncommutative
spacetime would involve a product gauge group which is spontaneously broken.
Gauge interactions in terms of physical gauge bosons are canonical with respect
to massless gauge bosons as required by the exact gauge symmetry, but not so
with respect to massive ones; and furthermore they are generally asymmetric in
the two sets of gauge bosons. On noncommutative spacetime this already occurs
for the simplest model of U(1) x U(1). We examine whether the above feature in
gauge interactions can be perturbatively maintained in this model. We show by a
complete one loop analysis that all ultraviolet divergences are removable with

A roadmap towards a circular and sustainable bioeconomy through waste valorization
Municipal solid waste and food supply chain waste are globally generated in large quantities from various sectors including various stages of food supply chains, municipalities, open markets and catering services. A prevailing priority in the EU is to stimulate the transition towards a circular economy that fosters the promotion of sustainable and resource-efficient policies for long-term socio-economic and environmental benefits. Common practices for waste management include landfill disposal, anaerobic digestion, composting and wastewater treatment. Recently, new technologies have been introduced to produce value-added products from agricultural residues and food processing side streams. Integrated and holistic approaches for organic waste utilization as industrial feedstocks will boost the transition towards the bio-economy era. The establishment of circular economy would expand and diversify the market outlets of bio-based products. This review provides an overview of the current methods on waste and by-product streams bioconversion to develop biorefinery concepts
In Defense of Wireless Carrier Sense
Carrier sense is often used to regulate concurrency in wireless medium access control (MAC) protocols, balancing interference protection and spatial reuse. Carrier sense is known to be imperfect, and many improved techniques have been proposed. Is the search for a replacement justified? This paper presents a theoretical model for average case two-sender carrier sense based on radio propagation theory and Shannon capacity. Analysis using the model shows that carrier sense performance is surprisingly close to optimal for radios with adaptive bitrate. The model suggests that hidden and exposed terminals usually cause modest reductions in throughput rather than dramatic decreases. Finally, it is possible to choose a fixed sense threshold which performs well across a wide range of scenarios, in large part due to the role of the noise floor. Experimental results from an indoor 802.11 testbed support these claims
