Phase Transition in Matched Formulas and a Heuristic for Biclique Satisfiability
A matched formula is a CNF formula whose incidence graph admits a matching
which matches a distinct variable to every clause. We study phase transition in
a context of matched formulas and their generalization of biclique satisfiable
formulas. We have performed experiments to find a phase transition of property
"being matched" with respect to the ratio where is the number of
clauses and is the number of variables of the input formula . We
compare the results of experiments to a theoretical lower bound which was shown
by Franco and Gelder (2003). Any matched formula is satisfiable, moreover, it
remains satisfiable even if we change polarities of any literal occurrences.
Szeider (2005) generalized matched formulas into two classes having the same
property -- var-satisfiable and biclique satisfiable formulas. A formula is
biclique satisfiable if its incidence graph admits covering by pairwise
disjoint bounded bicliques. Recognizing if a formula is biclique satisfiable is
NP-complete. In this paper we describe a heuristic algorithm for recognizing
whether a formula is biclique satisfiable and we evaluate it by experiments on
random formulas. We also describe an encoding of the problem of checking
whether a formula is biclique satisfiable into SAT and we use it to evaluate

A New Model-Independent Method for Extracting Spin-Dependent Cross Section Limits from Dark Matter Searches
A new method is proposed for extracting limits on spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon
interaction cross sections from direct detection dark matter experiments. The
new method has the advantage that the limits on individual WIMP-proton and
WIMP-neutron cross sections for a given WIMP mass can be combined in a simple
way to give a model-independent limit on the properties of WIMPs scattering
from both protons and neutrons in the target nucleus. Extension of the
technique to the case of a target material consisting of several different

The Evaluation of Equity-Focused Community Coalitions: A Review of the Empirical Literature
Conducting evaluation and research with community coalitions involved in health equity initiatives is inherently complex. In this paper we provide a review and synthesis of the empirical literature on the evaluation of equity-focused community coalitions. We explore issues, challenges, and barriers experienced by evaluators, as well as techniques and approaches that were considered beneficial. Our review identified 11 peer reviewed articles, from which we identified seven overlapping themes: (1) framing equity in the evaluation process, (2) use of multiple theoretical frameworks, (3) use of systems-focused approaches, (4) strategic use of intersectoral partnerships and collaborations, (5) intentional communication and building trusting relationships, (6) challenges dedicating purposeful time to the work, and (7) issues of cultural and contextual clarity and responsiveness. Our findings point to a significant focus on context, history, learning, communication, relationships, and power. The cultural complexity and historical scope of each context, diversity of stakeholders, and enormity of the systemic issues involved, shape and challenge the evaluation and research process in fundamental ways, requiring a creative and kinetic thinking -- a shifting from methodological certainty to an acknowledged uncertainty, where mixing, blending and the innovative use of approaches and theories becomes a way of moving beyond the colonizing past
Domestic ventilation rates, indoor humidity and dust mite allergens : are our homes causing the asthma pandemic?
This paper is concerned with historical changes in domestic ventilation rates, relative humidity and the associated risk of house dust mite colonization. A controlled trial evaluated allergen and water vapour control measures on the level of house dust mite (HDM) Der p1 allergen and indoor humidity, concurrently with changes in lung function in 54 subjects who completed the protocol. Mechanical heat recovery ventilation units significantly reduced moisture content in the active group, while HDM allergen reservoirs in carpets and beds were reduced by circa 96%. Self reported health status confirmed a significant clinical improvement in the active group. The study can form the basis for assessing minimum winter ventilation rates that can suppress RH below the critical ambient equilibrium humidity of 60% and thus inhibit dust mite colonization and activity in temperate and maritime in' uenced climatic regions
Practical Aspects of Automatic Orientation Analysis of Micrographs
Techniques to analyse the orientation of particulate materials as observed in the scanning electron microscope are reviewed in this paper. Emphasis is placed on digital imaging, processing, and analysis methods, but many secondary electron images are not amenable to traditional image processing as adequate thresholding is often difficult to achieve. Evaluation of the intensity gradient at each pixel offers an alternative approach, and this method is described in detail including the latest developments to generalize the technique. Practical points in the acquisition, processing and analysis of the images are considered and several images, including both synthetically generated and actual back-scattered images of soil particle arrangements are presented. A discussion of methods to display the results is included as are possible future developments
SICANE: a Detector Array for the Measurement of Nuclear Recoil Quenching Factors using Monoenergetic Neutron Beam
SICANE is a neutron scattering multidetector facility for the determination
of the quenching factor (ratio of the response to nuclear recoils and to
electrons) of cryogenic detectors used in direct WIMP searches. Well collimated
monoenergetic neutron beams are obtained with inverse (p,n) reactions. The
facility is described, and results obtained for the quenching factors of

Processing Multi-Spectral Scanning Electron Microscopy Images for Quantitative Microfabric Analysis
Multi-spectral image analysis is a powerful method to characterise quantitatively the mineralogy and microfabric of soils, sediments, and other particulate materials. Backscattered scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of polished, resin-impregnated samples are grouped with the corresponding X-ray elemental maps using classification methods commonly used in remote sensing. However, the resulting mineral-segmented images require processing to render them suitable for quantification. In the past, this has been done subjectively and interactively, but the new objective methods described in this paper largely eliminate this subjectivity. An intensity gradient magnitude image of the original backscattered electron image is used as the basis of an interactive erosion and dilation sequence to generate skeleton outlines defining the edges of the mineral grains. The areas defined within the skeleton areas are then classified as a particular mineral according to the predominant feature in the corresponding mineral-segmented image. Subsequent processing tackles the problems of \u27holes\u27 defined by the skeleton outlines, and the over-segmentation associated with certain classes of mineral grain. Further methods to deal with particles made up of more than one mineral are considered.
The matrix and porosity information is recombined to generate an image suitable for analysis using feature size statistics or general orientation analysis. The techniques described can be combined to permit batch processing of images. Applications of the techniques are illustrated on a soil from the East Anglian Breckland
