    Objectifs : Le kyste thymique est une tumeur congénitale rare. Souvent asymptomatique, elle atteint généralement les enfants ùgés de moins de 10 ans. Siégeant au niveau du cou, cette tumeur pose essentiellement le problÚme de diagnostic différentiel clinique. Son traitement est chirurgical avec un excellent pronostic et un trÚs faible risque de récidive locale. Nous rapportons un cas de kyste thymique cervical et nous rappelons la pathogénie et les diagnostics différentiels.Mots clés : kyste thymique, cou, histologiePurpose of study: The thymic cyst is a rare congenital tumor. Usually asymptomatic, this tumor is generally seen in childhood under the age of ten. In the neck, the preoperative diagnosis of this tumor is difficult and is rarely made. The treatment of choice is surgical excision. The long-term prognosis is excellent with a low rate of local recurrence. We report a new case of cervical thymic cyst and review the pathogenesis and the differential diagnosis.Keywords: Thymic cyst, neck, histology

    Identification and differentiation of Ficus carica L. cultivars using inter simple sequence repeat markers

    Information on germplasm diversity and relationships among elite materials is fundamentally important in crop improvement. The main objectives of our study is to determine the level of genetic diversity inter fig-tree cultivars using inter simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers. Fifty-seven local Tunisian figtree cultivars were fingerprinted with ISSR marker. A total of 33 alleles were detected. A high level of genetic diversity was identified inter cultivars. The clustering grouped the studied cultivars into four clusters with no correlation to geographical origin

    La sialomĂ©taplasie nĂ©crosante (SN) est une affection salivaire bĂ©nigne et rare, touchant principalement les glandes salivaires palatines et prĂ©sentant des ressemblances cliniques et histologiques avec les carcinomes orales. Nous rapportons un cas de SN chez une patiente de 73 ans, non tarĂ©e, Ă©dentĂ©e, qui rapporte la notion de prothĂšse ancienne mal adaptĂ©e et qui prĂ©sente une lĂ©sion ulcĂ©ro-vĂ©gĂ©tante, bien limitĂ©e, douloureuse, palatine gauche, Ă©voluant depuis 3 mois. Le scanner du massif facial a montrĂ© un Ă©paississement des parties molles palatines avec un aspect aminci et irrĂ©gulier de l’os en regard. Une pathologie maligne Ă  type de carcinome muco-Ă©pidermoide a Ă©tĂ© Ă©voquĂ©e. Une exĂ©rĂšse radicale de la lĂ©sion a Ă©tĂ© rĂ©alisĂ©e et l’examen histologique a conclu Ă  une SN.Mots clĂ©s : SialomĂ©taplasie nĂ©crosante; orale; palais; histologieNecrotizing sialometaplasia (NS) is a relatively uncommon benign disease of the salivary glands that most commonly occurs in the palate. It is often confused clinically and histopathologically with malignancies, such as squamous cell carcinoma or mucoepidermoid carcinoma. We report a case of NS in an edentate 73-year-old woman, with no medical history, showed up with a painful, well limited ulcerative lesion on the left palate, reporting its appearance three months ago. Reported also that she had a badly adapted removable denture. CT scan showed a thickening of the palate’s soft tissues with bone irregularity and thinning. A mucoepidermoid carcinoma was suspected. The patient underwent a radical excision of the lesion and histopathological diagnosis of NS was made.Keywords: Necrotizing sialometaplasia; oral; palate; histolog

    Optimization of production of Microbial Exopolysaccharides (EPS) with essential oils from two medicinal plants

    Objective: The aim of our study is to evaluate the effect of essential oils of two medicinal plants: Atriplex halimus and Haloxylon scoparium on the production of EPS by four probiotic strains.Methodology and results: Exopolysaccharides (EPSs) of lactic acid bacteria have potential for development and exploitation as food additives and functional food ingredients with both health and economic benefits. In this study, EPS production was carried at sucrose broth with different parameters (inoculum size, temperature, pH, incubation period, sucrose concentration, oxygen tension). In addition, under an optimized condition the effect of essential oils of two medicinal plants: Atriplex halimus (A.H.) and Haloxylon scoparium (H.S.) was evaluatedon EPS production by four strains (Leuconostoc sp., Lactobacillus sp. and two strains Pediococcus sp.). The production kinetics and exopolysaccharide yields were strongly dependent on the fermentation conditions. Physical factors such as temperature, pH and oxygen tension had a primordial importance. Conditions leading to higher levels of EPS production depends on strains and adequate concentrations of sucrose (50 g/l), pH (6,5 for Leuconostoc sp. and Pediococcus sp., 2; 4,5 for Lactobacillus sp. and 5 for Pediococcus sp. 1, incubationperiod (18 hours), temperature (37°C from Leuconostoc sp. and Pediococcus sp. 1, 30°C from Lactobacillus sp., 50°C from Pediococcus sp. 2) and medium of production (broth sucrose). The introduction of essential oils (150 ÎŒl) of tested plants improved the production of EPS from 7.9 – 9.73 mg/ml of all strains to 15.2 – 16.28 with essential oils of Atriplex halimus and 11.6-13.2 mg/ml with essential oil of Haloxylon scoparium. Results showed an important stimulation of the exopolysaccharides production by essential oils of two plants (A.H. and H.S.)Conclusion and Application of results: Our strains have shown their ability to produce maximum levels of EPS in the case of the addition of essential oils extracted from medicinal plants. These substances can be used as additives in the food industry to increase the productivity of the lactic strains of EPS as well as in the pharmaceutical field to prepare some medications.Keywords: exopolysaccharides, optimization, essential oils, medicinal plants, Lactic Acid Bacteri

    On the unsteady behavior of turbulence models

    Periodically forced turbulence is used as a test case to evaluate the predictions of two-equation and multiple-scale turbulence models in unsteady flows. The limitations of the two-equation model are shown to originate in the basic assumption of spectral equilibrium. A multiple-scale model based on a picture of stepwise energy cascade overcomes some of these limitations, but the absence of nonlocal interactions proves to lead to poor predictions of the time variation of the dissipation rate. A new multiple-scale model that includes nonlocal interactions is proposed and shown to reproduce the main features of the frequency response correctly

    Benign osteoblastoma in an unusual mastoid location

    SummaryIntroductionBenign osteoblastoma (OB) is an unusual primary bone tumor. The preferred locations are the posterior arch of vertebrae and long bones. We report herein an extremely rare location of an OB in the mastoid process of the temporal bone.Case reportA 22-year-old woman presented with painful left retro-auricular swelling. Computed tomography features were suggestive of an aggressive osteolytic lesion of the left mastoid. The pathologic examination of bone curettage material revealed a benign OB. A complete resection of the tumor was performed later, with no evidence of recurrence at 1 year.Discussion/ConclusionTo our knowledge, this is the 14th reported case of OB confined to the mastoid process of temporal bone. Its histological diagnosis can be difficult and osteosarcoma is its principal differential diagnosis. Although generally regarded as benign, OB has potential for recurrence and local invasion. As such, complete resection, whenever possible, is preferred over conventional curettage

    Characterization of intestinal microbiota in celiac children

    Celiac disease (CD) is enteropathy autoimmune induced by the ingestion of gluten in genetically predisposed subjects. The ingestion of gluten is responsible for the symptoms of CD, and a disturber of the intestinal microbiota. In this study, 13 Samples of intestinal biopsy, 15 fecal samples from celiac children, and 10 from controls children respectively were collected and analyzed by conventional culture technique to characterize the microbial profile intestinal of celiac children. There was 24 celiac children (8 boys), Mean age at diagnosis was 9.52 years, all have clinical manifestations, positive anti-transglutaminase antibodies and mucosal lesions suggestive of CD (Marsh Classification).We found a difference in intestinal microbiota, between celiac and controls children for example  the  Enterobacteria,  Clostridium sp and Staphylococcus sp were remarkably higher in biopsy and fecal samples of celiac children than in controls. Inversely the Enterococcus sp, Lactobacillus sp and Clostridium sp were slightly lower in celiac children. Our results indicate an imbalance in intestinal microbiota for celiac children as reduction in the numbers of Lactobacillus sp, Enterococcus sp and increases in the numbers of Enterobacteria, Staphylococcus sp and Clostridium sp.Keywords: Celiac disease, Intestinal Microbiota, Anti-transglutaminase, Lacobacillus sp

    The decay of homogeneous anisotropic turbulence

    We present the results of a numerical investigation of three-dimensional decaying turbulence with statistically homogeneous and anisotropic initial conditions. We show that at large times, in the inertial range of scales: (i) isotropic velocity fluctuations decay self-similarly at an algebraic rate which can be obtained by dimensional arguments; (ii) the ratio of anisotropic to isotropic fluctuations of a given intensity falls off in time as a power law, with an exponent approximately independent of the strength of the fluctuation; (iii) the decay of anisotropic fluctuations is not self-similar, their statistics becoming more and more intermittent as time elapses. We also investigate the early stages of the decay. The different short-time behavior observed in two experiments differing by the phase organization of their initial conditions gives a new hunch on the degree of universality of small-scale turbulence statistics, i.e. its independence of the conditions at large scales.Comment: 9 pages, 17 figure

    Poorly differentiated thyroid carcinoma: a retrospective clinicopathological study

    Poorly differentiated thyroid carcinoma (PDTC) is an independent thyroid cancer histotype. In spite of its scarcity, it represents the main cause of death from non-anaplastic follicular cell-derived thyroid cancer. However, given the newness of this entity, few data are available on its clinical behaviour and no explicit consensus sets its treatment. To report the experience of a tertiary medical centre in morocco with PDTC over a period of 7 years. Retrospective study selecting all patients treated for thyroid carcinoma in Nuclear Medicine Department of a tertiary medical centre in Casablanca over seven years period. Patient's files were reviewed for background data, clinico-pathological characteristics, treatment and outcome. Seven patients were included in the study. Patient's average age was 60 years old (30-81) including six women and one man. All patients underwent a total thyroidectomy completed by cervical lymph node dissection in 57% of cases. Mean primary tumour size was 4cm (1-9cm). Patients were classified pT3 in 70% of cases, pT1 and pT2 in 15% each. Vascular invasion was found in 85% of cases. Pathological subtypes found were "insular carcinoma" in 85% of cases. Radioiodine therapy (RIT) was indicated in all cases. Follow-up period ranged between 10 months and 6 years. It showed a complete remission in 57% of cases, persistent disease in 28% of cases and a progressive disease in 15% of cases with a local recurrence. To date, the survival rate is 85%. PDTC is an aggressive thyroid cancer histotype. Treatment remains surgical followed by RIT if the tumour is radioavid. Multimodality therapy is indicated depending on the case and close monitoring is always indicated given the high risk of relapse

    Inhibition of SLPI ameliorates disease activity in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor (SLPI) exerts wide ranging effects on inflammatory pathways and is upregulated in EAE but the biological role of SLPI in EAE, an animal model of multiple sclerosis is unknown</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>To investigate the pathophysiological effects of SLPI within EAE, we induced SLPI-neutralizing antibodies in mice and rats to determine the clinical severity of the disease. In addition we studied the effects of SLPI on the anti-inflammatory cytokine TGF-ÎČ.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The induction of SLPI neutralizing antibodies resulted in a milder disease course in mouse and rat EAE. SLPI neutralization was associated with increased serum levels of TGF-ÎČ and increased numbers of FoxP3+ CD4+ T cells in lymph nodes. <it>In vitro</it>, the addition of SLPI significantly decreased the number of functional FoxP3+ CD25<sup>hi </sup>CD4+ regulatory T cells in cultures of naive human CD4+ T cells. Adding recombinant TGF-ÎČ to SLPI-treated human T cell cultures neutralized SLPI's inhibitory effect on regulatory T cell differentiation.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In EAE, SLPI exerts potent pro-inflammatory actions by modulation of T-cell activity and its neutralization may be beneficial for the disease.</p
