Comparative Nephrotoxicity of Cisplatin and Nedaplatin: Mechanisms and Histopathological Characteristics

    Get PDF
The antineoplastic platinum complexes cisplatin and its analogues are widely used in the chemotherapy of a variety of human malignancies, and are especially active against several types of cancers. Nedaplatin is a second-generation platinum complex with reduced nephrotoxicity. However, their use commonly causes nephrotoxicity due to a lack of tumor tissue selectivity. Several recent studies have provided significant insights into the molecular and histopathological events associated with nedaplatin nephrotoxicity. In this review, we summarize findings concerning the renal histopathology and molecular pathogenesis induced by antineoplastic platinum complexes, with a particular focus on the comparative nephrotoxicity of cisplatin and nedaplatin in rats

The major goals of this study are to examine junior high school students’ awareness of fluency and impromptu skill in terms of speaking in English as a Foreign Language (hereafter, EFL) and to consider what to do, by way of future research and creation of daily lessons, in order to raise awareness and to develop their practical speaking abilities. Recent Japanese EFL education (see MEXT 2017a-e) emphasizes that developing learners’ fluency and impromptu skill is particularly important. This is because traditional Japanese EFL education has focused on acquisition of grammar, drawing learners’ attention to individual forms rather than to meaning. Problematic outcomes of such an approach are tendencies for learners to comprehend texts/utterances in a heavy bottom-up manner and to refrain from speaking/writing without confirming that what they are about to say/write is grammatically correct. In this study, 419 junior high school students in 1st to 3rd grades responded to a short paper-and-pencil questionnaire that examined their awareness of fluency and impromptu skill in EFL speaking. Results of analyses showed a significant difference in awareness of impromptu skill between 1st and 2nd grades and between 1st and 3rd grades, whereas no significant differences were found in awareness of fluency between these three grades. Moreover, results of analyses showed no correlation between 1st graders’ mid-term/ final exam scores and their awareness of fluency/impromptu skill, but showed a correlation between 2nd graders’ final exam scores and their awareness of fluency and between 2nd graders’ final exam scores and their awareness of impromptu skill. Based on this and other information obtained in the study, we consider issues for future research and creation of classroom activities that develop fluency and impromptu skill in Japanese EFL education

De novo NSF mutations cause early infantile epileptic encephalopathy

N‐ethylmaleimide‐sensitive factor (NSF) plays a critical role in intracellular vesicle transport, which is essential for neurotransmitter release. Herein, we, for the first time, document human monogenic disease phenotype of de novo pathogenic variants in NSF, that is, epileptic encephalopathy of early infantile onset. When expressed in the developing eye of Drosophila, the mutant NSF severely affected eye development, while the wild‐type allele had no detectable effect under the same conditions. Our findings suggest that the two pathogenic variants exert a dominant negative effect. De novo heterozygous mutations in the NSF gene cause early infantile epileptic encephalopathy

Prevalence and Risk Factors for Hepatitis C Virus Infection in Mongolian Children: Findings From a Nationwide Survey

Although the hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is one of the major causes of chronic hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in Mongolia, its prevalence among children and routes of transmission are largely unknown. The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of anti-HCV antibodies and the possible risk factors for transmission among school children using representative national data. A nationwide cross-sectional survey among elementary school children was conducted in four main geographical regions and the metropolitan area of Mongolia, through multistage, stratified, random cluster sampling. Serum samples from 1,145 children (response rate, 93%; 592 boys and 553 girls; age range, 7-12 years), which represented nearly 2% of the second grade population in Mongolia, were tested for HCV antibodies with a third-generation immunoradiometric assay (IRMA). Positive samples were further evaluated by a third-generation immunoblot assay (RIBA). A standardized questionnaire concerning the socio-demographic characteristics and potential risk factors was used. Overall, seven subjects were confirmed to be anti-HCV seropositive, giving a prevalence of 0.6% (95% CI: 0.15-1.0%). The prevalence of anti-HCV increased with age. In the multivariate logistic regression analysis, adjusted for age, sex, and residence, the history of dental manipulation (odds ratio [OR] ¼ 15.4; 95% CI: 1.4-164.8) and surgery (OR ¼ 8.3; 95% CI: 1.5-45.6) were associated independently with the presence of anti-HCV. These findings suggest that contaminated equipment used in the dental and surgical manipulations probably played a predominant role in HCV transmission among Mongolian children. Strict guidelines on disinfection and sterilization procedures of medical instruments have to be introduced and should be followed to improve the control of HCV infection in Mongolia

[EN] We report a microwave heating system with a carbon heating tube (CHT) made by a 4-mm diameter quartz tube filled carbon particles and Ar gas at 1400 Pa. 2.45-GHz microwave at 200 W was introduced to a 300-dimameter metal cavity, in which 60-mm-long CHT was set at the central position. The numerical simulation with a finite element moment method resulted in the standing wave of the electric field caused by three dimensional Fresnel interference effect with low high electric field intensity ranging from from 1 to 6 kV/m because of effective absorption of microwave power by the CHT. The lowest average electrical field intensity of 5 kV/m in the cavity space was given by the electrical conductivity of carbon ranging from 10 to 55 S/m. The CHT with 55 S/m heated to 1200oC by microwave irradiation at 200 W. This heating method was applied to activate 1.0x1015-cm-2 boron and phosphorus implanted regions in n-type crystalline silicon substrate to fabricate pn junction and solar cells. The CHT heating at 1200oC realized decrease in the sheet resistivity to 146 Ω/sq, decrease in the density of defect states to 1.3x1011 and 9.2x1010 cm-2 for boron (p+) and phosphorus (n+) implanted surfaces, and solar cell characteristic with a conversion efficiency of 15% under illumination of air mass 1.5 at 0.1 W/cm2.Sameshima, T.; Kikuchi, T.; Uehara, T.; Arima, T.; Hasumi, M.; Miyazaki, T.; Kobayashi, G.... Natural Diet of Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii): Long-Term Record from the Mahale Mountains, Tanzania

    Get PDF
All the plant and animal foods recorded to be eaten by wild chimpanzees of Kasoje in the Mahale Mountains, Tanzania between 1965 and 1981 are listed up together with some additional miscellaneous foods. As for the plant foods, the chimpanzees have been confirmed to utilize 328 food items from 198 species (including 8 food items from 6 cultigen species). They also consume 12 species of mammals, 5 species of birds or their eggs (including one domestic species), and more than 15 genera of insects (including at least 25 species). Since drastic inter-annual changes in food composition in the diet of wild chimpanzees exist, only such data collected on the basis of a long-term perspective can reveal their diversified food repertoire

Raman spectroscopic study on NpO[2](+)–Ca(2+) interaction in highly concentrated calcium chloride

    Get PDF
Coordination circumstance of neptunyl ion in concentrated CaCl[2] solutions was analyzed by Raman spectrometry. Besides the symmetric stretch (ν[1]) mode of NpO[2](+) and NpO[2](2+), the asymmetric stretch (ν[3]) mode of NpO[2](+) was found. The Raman intensity of the ν[3] mode increased with the concentration of CaCl[2] in the system. This would be attributable to the cation–cation interaction between Np(V) and Ca(II)
