    Accumulation and depletion layer thicknesses in organic field effect transistors

    We present a simple but powerful method to determine the thicknesses of the accumulation and depletion layers and the distribution curve of injected carriers in organic field effect transistors. The conductivity of organic semiconductors in thin film transistors was measured in-situ and continuously with a bottom contact configuration, as a function of film thickness at various gate voltages. Using this method, the thicknesses of the accumulation and depletion layers of pentacene were determined to be 0.9 nm (VG=-15 V) and 5 nm (VG=15 V).Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures, Jap. J. Appl.     On the best possible competitive ratio for the multislope ski-rental problem

    The multislope ski-rental problem is an extension of the classical ski-rental problem, where the player has several lease options besides the pure rent and buy options. In this problem the hardness of an instance, which is the setting of options, significantly affects the player's performance. There is an algorithm that for a given instance, computes the best possible strategy. However, the output is given as numerical values and therefore the relational nature between an instance and the best possible performance for it has not been known. In this paper we prove that even for the easiest instance, a competitive ratio smaller than cannot be achieved. More precisely, a tight lower bound on the best possible performance is obtained in a closed form parametrized by the number of options.     Fine and Large Coulomb Diamonds in a Silicon Quantum Dot

    We experimentally study the transport properties of silicon quantum dots (QDs) fabricated from a highly doped n-type silicon-on-insulator wafer. Low noise electrical measurements using a low temperature complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (LTCMOS) amplifier are performed at 4.2 K in liquid helium. Two series of Coulomb peaks are observed: long-period oscillations and fine structures, and both of them show clear source drain voltage dependence. We also observe two series of Coulomb diamonds having different periodicity. The obtained experimental results are well reproduced by a master equation analysis using a model of double QDs coupled in parallel.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Jpn. J. Appl. Phy

    Acute Bowel Injury due to Cryoablation for Renal Cell Carcinoma: Correlated Radiologic and Pathologic Findings

    An 87-year-old Japanese man underwent percutaneous cryoablation (PCA) therapy for his renal cell tumor. We displaced the colon from the tumor using hydrodissection. Computed tomography (CT) immediately after PCA was indicative of iceball extension to the colon wall, and a discontinuous enhancement of the colon wall was observed. We therefore performed an emergency surgery. On laparotomy, we observed a dark-purple area on the affected area of the colon, and the resected specimen showed focal, deep ulceration on the mucosal surface. Photomicrography revealed mucosal necrosis, submucosal hemorrhage, and necrotic foci in the muscularis propria, corresponding to the discontinuous colon wall enhancement on CT and the deep ulceration and dark-purple area on laparotomy. He recovered from surgery and was discharged without any complications
