Effects of MgO Catalyst on Depolymerization of Poly-L-lactic Acid to L,L-Lactide

To control the depolymerization of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) into L,L-lactide, effects of altering the physical and chemical properties of magnesium oxide (MgO) on its ability as a catalyst were investigated. Four kinds of MgO particles: MgO-heavy, 0.2, 0.05, and 0.01μm, were used having primary particles of different dimensions, surface areas, and chemical structures/species. Thermo-gravimetric profiles of PLLA/MgO composites shifted into a lower temperature range due to an increase in the catalytic surface area resulting from a decrease in the dimensions of the MgO particles. However, decreasing the dimensions caused frequent side reactions with unfavorable products: cyclic oligomers and meso-lactide, due to the presence of different chemical structures/species. Heat treatment of the MgO particles effectively suppressed the oligomer production and enhanced the L,L-lactide production, but also accelerated the meso-lactide production at lower temperatures. These results indicate that the surface properties of MgO considerably influence the depolymerization of PLLA, with the catalytic behavior of MgO controllable by heat treatment and selection of the depolymerization conditions

Racemization Behavior of L,L-Lactide during Heating

To control the depolymerization process of poly (L-lactic acid) into L,L-lactide for feedstock recycling, the racemization of L,L-lactide as a post-depolymerization reaction was investigated. In the absence of a catalyst, the conversion to meso-lactide increased with increase in the heating temperature and time at a higher rate than the conversion into oligomers. The resulting high composition of meso-lactide suggests that the direct racemization of L,L-lactide had occurred in addition to the known racemization mechanism that occurs on the oligomer chains. In the presence of MgO, the oligomerization rapidly proceeded to reach an equilibrium state between monomers and oligomers. The equilibrium among L,L-, meso-, and D,D-lactides was found to be a convergent composition ratio: L,L-:meso-:D,D-lactides = 1:1.22:0.99 (wt/wt/wt) after 120 min at 300 °C. This composition ratio also indicates that, in addition to the known racemization reaction on the oligomer chains, direct racemization among the lactides is also a frequent occurrence

Enhanced biogas production from palm oil mill effluent supplemented with untreated oil palm empty fruit bunch biomass with a change in the microbial community

    Get PDF
The biogas and biomethane production in a 50 litre closed stirred tank anaerobic bioreactor treating palm oil mill effluent (POME) supplemented with oil palm biomass in the form of oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) under mesophilic condition was evaluated. With OPEFB supplementation, the biogas and biomethane generation increased by 63% and 52%, respectively. During this process, we found changes in the OPEFB morphology and microbial community through microbiota analysis using 16S rRNA gene clone library method, after OPEFB was added, suggesting that the increased biogas and biomethane production would be due to enhanced lignocellulosic biomass degradation

Predictive Value of the Cardio-Ankle Vascular Index for Cardiovascular Events in Patients at Cardiovascular Risk

BACKGROUND: Arterial stiffness is an important predictor of cardiovascular events; however, indexes for measuring arterial stiffness have not been widely incorporated into routine clinical practice. This study aimed to determine whether the cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI), based on the blood pressure-independent stiffness parameter beta and reflecting arterial stiffness from the origin of the ascending aorta, is a good predictor of cardiovascular events in patients with cardiovascular disease risk factors in a large prospective cohort. METHODS AND RESULTS: This multicenter prospective cohort study, commencing in May 2013, with a 5-year follow-up period, included patients (aged 40-74 years) with cardiovascular disease risks. The primary outcome was the composite of cardiovascular death, nonfatal stroke, or nonfatal myocardial infarction. Among 2932 included patients, 2001 (68.3%) were men; the mean (SD) age at diagnosis was 63 (8) years. During the median follow-up of 4.9 years, 82 participants experienced primary outcomes. The CAVI predicted the primary outcome (hazard ratio, 1.38; 95% CI, 1.16-1.65; P CONCLUSIONS: This large cohort study demonstrated that the CAVI predicted cardiovascular events

Heliocentric Distance Dependence of Zodiacal Light Observed by Hayabusa2#

Zodiacal light (ZL) is sunlight scattered by interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) at optical wavelengths. The spatial distribution of IDPs in the Solar System may hold an important key to understanding the evolution of the Solar System and material transportation within it. The number density of IDPs can be expressed as n(r)rαn(r) \sim r^{-\alpha}, and the exponent α1.3\alpha \sim 1.3 was obtained by previous observations from interplanetary space by Helios 1/2 and Pioneer 10/11 in the 1970s and 1980s. However, no direct measurements of α\alpha based on ZL observations from interplanetary space outside Earth's orbit have been performed since then. Here, we introduce initial results for the radial profile of the ZL at optical wavelengths observed over the range 0.76-1.06 au by ONC-T aboard the Hayabusa2# mission in 2021-2022. The ZL brightness we obtained is well reproduced by a model brightness, although there is a small excess of the observed ZL brightness over the model brightness at around 0.9 au. The radial power-law index we obtained is α=1.30±0.08\alpha = 1.30 \pm 0.08, which is consistent with previous results based on ZL observations. The dominant source of uncertainty arises from the uncertainty in estimating the diffuse Galactic light (DGL).Comment: 22 pages, 19 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication by Earth, Planets and Spac
