    Mechanical performances of finger jointed cross laminated timber (CLT)

    Based on the idea of first producing small-size CLT panels and afterward connecting them using finger joints to make larger CLT panels, finger-jointed CLT test specimens were fabricated by setting experimental parameters such as the kind of finger joint (large or normal), the combination of finger joint strength (strong–strong, or weak–weak) and the number of layers, and ply (3L3P, 5L5P, and 5L7P). Destructive tests subjected to out-of-plane as well as in-plane bending and shear, and axial compression load were performed. To judge the mechanical performance of the finger-jointed CLT panels, the lower 5% strength value evaluated from the destructive tests data were used for comparison with the characteristic strength value of CLT products assigned by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism in Japan (MLIT). On the other hand, the lower 50% stiffness value evaluated from the destructive test data was used for comparison with the design stiffness values proposed by commercial sectors. Most of the tested finger-jointed CLT groups satisfied the requirements for the characteristic strength values although there were a few exceptional cases in the weak–weak groups.     Some Design Proposals to Support Independent Life of the Elderlies with Mild Cognitive Impairments who Live Alone.

    In Japan, the elderly persons will exceed 30% of population and the dementia will be more than 7 million in 2025. This means the one of five elderly persons will be dementia. Most of them will live in own house with his/her suppose or aged children, or alone. The dementia is progressive disease, so patients lose their abilities gradually in approximately ten years. Mostly there are two types of countermeasure action for the dementia; one is care and the other is prevention such as brain training or cognition plus exercise. Even though they will do many things by themselves independently in the early stage of dementia or in the state of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), they forced to quit daily activities such as cooking or outing by his/her relatives for reason of safety. This inhibition affects as the disuse syndrome, then he/she will lose own abilities faster. As the main symptoms of the dementia is memory loss, the authors focused on prompting behavior by using IoT technology. The sensors in the house are watching the environment and send data to control center in the house. The control center tells the situation by the synthesized voice such as “the stove still burning”, or “the door of freezing chamber is open”, then store the data with time stamp. The resident with memory loss may think about the meaning then make decision and finally do or not do something. The results are stored in the server, so the relatives can monitor the situation of the resident from anywhere

    Clinical significance of the expression of connexin26 in colorectal cancer

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Connexin26 (Cx26) is one of the connexins (Cxs) family members which form gap junction channels. Cx26 is considered to be a tumor suppressor gene. However, recent studies revealed that over expression of Cx26 is associated with a poor prognosis in several human cancers. This study investigated the correlation between Cx26 expression and the clinicopathological features and P53 expression in colorectal cancer.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>One hundred and fifty-three patients who underwent a curative resection were studied. Tissue samples were investigated by immunohistochemical staining using antibodies for Cx26 and P53. Moreover, apoptotic cells were detected by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end-labeling (TUNEL) staining.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Cx26 expression was found in 83 cases (54.2%) and P53 expression in 71 cases (46.4%). A correlation was observed between the Cx26 expression and recurrence, histology, and p53 expression (P < 0.05). Cx26 positive tumors had significantly longer survival than Cx26 negative tumors (P < 0.05). A multivariate Cox analysis demonstrated that Cx26 expression was an independent prognostic factor (P < 0.05). However, no significant correlation was observed between Cx26 and AI.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This study suggests that Cx26 expression is an independent prognostic factor in patients that undergo a curative resection of colorectal cancer.</p

    Prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux disorder in arrhythmic patients and adjunctive effects of proton pump inhibitors on comorbid atrial fibrillation

    Background: Although the coexistence of atrial fibrillation (AF) and gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD) has been reported, the prevalence of GERD in arrhythmic patients remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between GERD and several kinds of arrhythmia, and the therapeutic effects of proton pump inhibitors (PPI) on AF.Methods: In Study 1, patients with various kinds of arrhythmia (n=147) including AF (n=98) were administered a GERD-specific questionnaire (F-scale). In Study 2, patients with AF and GERD (n=27) responded to an AF-specific questionnaire (AFQLQ) before and after the additive PPI therapy to explore the effects of PPI on comorbid AF. In Study 3, device memory was assessed as it is related to PPI administration in pacemaker patients with GERD and AF (n=5) to study the effects of PPI on device-documented AF.Results: Left atrial (LA) size and F-scale scores in AF patients were the largest among the arrhythmic patients in Study 1. Logistic regression analysis showed no independent determinants of GERD. F-scale scores and AFQLQ scores showed temporal and partial correlations and significant improvement after starting PPI in Study 2. However, device interrogation confirmed limited AF improvement by starting PPI in Study 3.Conclusions: GERD is prevalent in AF patients. LA size is not an independent determinant of GERD. Symptoms of AF were improved, whereas device-documented paroxysms of AF were not ameliorated by PPI administration. A large-scale prospective study is required to conclude the efficacy of PPI on the comorbid AF

    Validation of the everyday technology use questionnaire in a Japanese context.

    Background/Objective The Everyday Technology Use Questionnaire (ETUQ), which evaluates the perceived relevance of and the perceived ability in everyday technology (ET) use, has demonstrated acceptable psychometric properties in Swedish studies of older adults. The aim of this study was to examine the reliability and validity of the ETUQ in a Japanese context in older Japanese adults. Methods A sample of older Japanese adults (n = 164) including persons with (n = 32) and without (n = 132) cognitive impairment was interviewed with the ETUQ, including original items (ETs) and added Japanese context-specific items. Data were analyzed using a Rasch measurement model. Results The analysis demonstrated acceptable functioning of the rating scale, internal scale validity, person response validity, and person-separation reliability of the Japanese ETUQ according to the Rasch model. However, evidence supporting unidimensionality in the Japanese ETUQ was not consistent in this sample. The added Japanese items did not significantly change the estimated individual person measures of perceived ability to use ET. Conclusion The Japanese ETUQ seems to be a sensitive tool to evaluate perceived ability in ET use among elderly people in Japan with and without cognitive impairment. Therefore, it could be used in research and clinical practice.     Structure of SARS-CoV-2 membrane protein essential for virus assembly

    新型コロナウイルスのウイルス形成に必須の膜タンパク質の構造を解明. 京都大学プレスリリース. 2022-08-08.The coronavirus membrane protein (M) is the most abundant viral structural protein and plays a central role in virus assembly and morphogenesis. However, the process of M protein-driven virus assembly are largely unknown. Here, we report the cryo-electron microscopy structure of the SARS-CoV-2 M protein in two different conformations. M protein forms a mushroom-shaped dimer, composed of two transmembrane domain-swapped three-helix bundles and two intravirion domains. M protein further assembles into higher-order oligomers. A highly conserved hinge region is key for conformational changes. The M protein dimer is unexpectedly similar to SARS-CoV-2 ORF3a, a viral ion channel. Moreover, the interaction analyses of M protein with nucleocapsid protein (N) and RNA suggest that the M protein mediates the concerted recruitment of these components through the positively charged intravirion domain. Our data shed light on the M protein-driven virus assembly mechanism and provide a structural basis for therapeutic intervention targeting M protein

    Improving Mathematics Lesson and Evaluation through Setting Inquiry Problem-Solving Activities

    The purpose of this research is to make a theoretical framework for improving mathematics lesson and evaluation through setting inquiry problem-solving activities effectively in junior high and senior high mathematics lessons. To achieve this, we first carried out a questionnaire survey to capture how students perceive learning mathematics and, based on the results, made a framework incorporated these activities for lesson design and evaluation of student’s learning. Then, sample lesson conducted in a junior and senior high school based on the framework was analyzed to investigate its effectiveness and get some practical suggestions

    Brachytherapy in Japan

    This study aimed to assess the current state of brachytherapy (BT) resources, practices and resident education in Japan. A nationwide survey was undertaken encompassing 177 establishments facilitating BT in 2022. Questionnaires were disseminated to each BT center, and feedback through online channels or postal correspondence was obtained. The questionnaire response rate was 90% (159/177), and every prefecture had a response in at least one center. The number of centers in each prefecture ranged from 0.6 to 3.6 (median: 1.3) per million population. The annual number of patients in each center ranged from 0 to 272 (median: 31). While most prefectures provided intracavitary (IC) BT for gynecological cancers and interstitial (IS) BT for prostate cancer, only one-third of the prefectures provided IS BT for cancer sites other than the prostate. The institutional image-guided BT implementation rate was 71%. IC and IS BT was performed for 15.4% of IC BT cases of gynecological cancer. Only 47% of the BT training centers answered that they could provide adequate training in BT for residents. The most common reason for this finding was the insufficient number of patients in each center. The results show that, although BT has achieved uniformity in terms of facility penetration, new technologies are not yet widespread enough. Furthermore, IS BT, which requires advanced skills, is limited to a few BT centers, and considerable number of BT training centers do not have sufficient caseloads to provide the necessary experience for their residents
