(DIPF/Orig.)The political dimension of Peter Petersen\u27s actions has as yet not been taken into account. Due to this deficit, he is still considered a thoroughly a-political pedagogue. But, in fact, Petersen had, since the 1920s, steadily pursued the maintenance of existing scopes of action, as well as the development and shielding of his own reform project. The author examines his strategic and targeted closing of ranks with diverse political decision-makers and submits a theory of action which reveals the political core of Petersen\u27s work. Diabetes is an independent risk factor for cancer after heart and/or lung transplantation

Background: De novo cancers are feared complications after heart or lung transplantation. Recent data suggest that diabetes mellitus (DM) might also be a risk factor for cancer. We hypothesized that transplanted diabetic patients are at greater risk of developing cancer compared to non-diabetic ones. Methods: We reviewed 353 patients post-heart and/or -lung transplantation from our center between October 1999 and June 2021. Patients with follow-up <180 days ( n = 87) were excluded from the analysis. The remaining 266 patients were divided into patients who had preoperative DM (n = 88) or developed it during follow-up ( n = 40) and patients without DM ( n = 138). Results: The diabetic cohort showed higher rates of malignancies in all patients (30.33 vs. 15.97%, p = 0.005) and in the matched population (31.9 vs. 16.1%, p < 0.001). There were also significantly more solid tumors (17.9 vs. 9.4%, p = 0.042; matched: 16.6 vs. 9.1%, p = 0.09) The presence of diabetes was associated with a 13% increased risk of cancer when compared to non-diabetic patients. New-onset post-transplant diabetes doubled the likelihood of cancer development. Conclusions: Pre-transplant diabetes mellitus increases the risk of cancer after heart and/or lung transplantation. However, new-onset diabetes after transplantation is associated with a much greater cancer risk. This information is relevant for screening during follow-up

(DIPF/Orig.)In recent years, ever more documents have been found which cast a shadow on the problematic position held by Peter Petersen and on his concept of Jenaplan pedagogy within the polycratic educational system of National Socialism. So far, the general assumption was that, despite this problematic position, Petersen had largely avoided racist or anti-Semitic conceptions in his pedagogical theory. On the basis of recently discovered sources, the author explains that this position is no longer tenable. As early as the summer of 1933, Petersen had already voiced strongly anti-Semitic opinions; and by the end of the 1930s, he had increasingly adopted the "eugenical" positions held by the management of the Jena University, which shows that he, at least, legitimized the National Socialist system of terror. Pressurised alkaline electrolyser with high efficiency and wide operating range - The Project „RESelyser“

    No full text
The project RESelyser develops high pressure, highly efficient, low cost alkaline water electrolysers that can be integrated with renewable energy power sources (RES) using an advanced membrane concept, highly efficient electrodes and a new cell design. A new separator membrane with internal electrolyte circulation and an adapted design of the cell to improve mass transfer, especially gas evacuation is investigated and demonstrated. Intermittent and varying load operation with RES is addressed by improved electrode stability and a cell concept for increasing the gas purity of hydrogen and oxygen especially at part load and high pressure operation. Some recent results will be presented: high performance electrodes with a plasma sprayed coating layer give an overpotential reduction of 330 mV compared to uncoated electrodes thus showing high performance and stability. Detailed investigation of the electrode pore structure and microstructure at beginning of life and after operation shows possible degradation mechanisms. A double layer diaphragm with internal KOH supply improves the gas purity and high current density performance of the cell. The cell concept was realizes in single cells of 300 cm2 area and a 10 kW stack. The research leading to these results has received funding from the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) for the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Technology Initiative under grant agreement n° [278732] 10
