Multiculturalism in the world system: towards a social justice model of inter/multicultural education

Multiculturalism burst in Asia with the winds of globalisation. Fuelled by immigration, cultural hybridity and normative regimes from multilateral and bilateral organisations, multiculturalism is a new challenge for Asian economies, their politics of culture and their higher education institutions. Moreover, although heavily implemented from the start of the last century in the United States and in Europe to some extent, multiculturalism and multicultural education signify a premise in constructing models of cosmopolitan democracies and what has been known as ‘global citizenship education’. Drawing from the more mature experiences of the European Union (EU) and the United States in this field, this article traces the theoretical contours of and debates within multiculturalism. The article also focuses on the learning experience across borders, which is well represented in international comparative education studies. It probes the occurrence of any crisis in the field of multiculturalism in the United States and EU. Lessons learned from a comparison of the U.S. and EU experiences may be instructive to the Asian economies and cultures that are dealing with multiculturalism as a new force in the world system

Study of the arboreal component in two areas of the Submontane Rainforest in Ubatuba, Sao Paulo State

    Get PDF
We studied the floristic composition and structure of the arboreal component (trees, palms and ferns with DBH equal to or greater than 4.8 cm) of two plots of Lower Montane Rain Forest in Ubatuba, SP, one with a history of selective logging and the other more preserved. We sampled 50 families, 114 genera and 193 species (four undetermined). The richest families were Myrtaceae, Fabaceae, Lauraceae, Rubiaceae, Melastomataceae and Sapotaceae. In the disturbed plot we sampled 104 species, 72 genera and 39 families, and in the more preserved area, 152 species, 98 genera and 43 families. There were differences in species richness, in the prevalence of their succesional status and in the structure of the areas, and the multivariate analysis allowed recognition of two floristic blocks. Among all species, 33 were exclusive of the first plot and 95 were exclusive of the second plot. Almost half of the species (45%) occurred with only one or two individuals and 29 have some degree of rarity. Five species are in the category of vulnerable in the List of brazilian plant species threatened of extinction. The differences observed between the sites studied, as well as the occurrence of rare and endangered species highlight the importance of the conservation of the area.11231333

Antonio Gramsci’s impact on critical pedagogy

    Get PDF
This paper provides an account of Antonio Gramsci’s impact on the area of critical pedagogy. It indicates the Gramscian influence on the thinking of major exponents of the field. It foregrounds Gramsci's ideas and then indicates how they have been taken up by a selection of critical pedagogy exponents who were chosen on the strength of their identification and engagement with Gramsci's ideas, some of them even having written entire essays on Gramsci. The essay concludes with a discussion concerning an aspect of Gramsci's concerns, the question of powerful knowledge, which, in the present author's view, provides a formidable challenge to critical pedagogues.peer-reviewe

A dusty pinwheel nebula around the massive star WR 104

Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars are luminous massive blue stars thought to be immediate precursors to the supernova terminating their brief lives. The existence of dust shells around such stars has been enigmatic since their discovery some 30 years ago; the intense radiation field from the star should be inimical to dust survival. Although dust-creation models, including those involving interacting stellar winds from a companion star, have been put forward, high-resolution observations are required to understand this phenomena. Here we present resolved images of the dust outflow around Wolf-Rayet WR 104, obtained with novel imaging techniques, revealing detail on scales corresponding to about 40 AU at the star. Our maps show that the dust forms a spatially confined stream following precisely a linear (or Archimedian) spiral trajectory. Images taken at two separate epochs show a clear rotation with a period of 220 +/- 30 days. Taken together, these findings prove that a binary star is responsible for the creation of the circumstellar dust, while the spiral plume makes WR 104 the prototype of a new class of circumstellar nebulae unique to interacting wind systems.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, Appearing in Nature (1999 April 08
