    Adaptive reconfigurable voting for enhanced reliability in medium-grained fault tolerant architectures

    The impact of SRAM-based FPGAs is constantly growing in aerospace industry despite the fact that their volatile configuration memory is highly susceptible to radiation effects. Therefore, strong fault-handling mechanisms have to be developed in order to protect the design and make it capable of fighting against both soft and permanent errors. In this paper, a fully reconfigurable medium-grained triple modular redundancy (TMR) architecture which forms part of a runtime adaptive on-board processor (OBP) is presented. Fault mitigation is extended to the voting mechanism by applying our reconfiguration methodology not only to domain replicas but also to the voter itself. The proposed approach takes advantage of adaptive configuration placement and modular property of the OBP, thus allowing on-line creation of different medium-grained TMRs and selection of their granularity level. Consequently, we are able to narrow down the fault-affected area thus making the error recovery process faster and less power consuming. The conventional hardware based voting is supported by the ICAP-based one in order to additionally strengthen the reconfigurable intermediate voting. In addition, the implementation methodology ensures using only one memory footprint for all voters and their voting adaptations thus saving storing resources in expensive rad-hard memories

    Method for run time hardware code profiling for algorithm acceleration

    In this paper we propose a method for run time profiling of applications on instruction level by analysis of loops. Instead of looking for coarse grain blocks we concentrate on fine grain but still costly blocks in terms of execution times. Most code profiling is done in software by introducing code into the application under profile witch has time overhead, while in this work data for the position of a loop, loop body, size and number of executions is stored and analysed using a small non intrusive hardware block. The paper describes the system mapping to runtime reconfigurable systems. The fine grain code detector block synthesis results and its functionality verification are also presented in the paper.     Design of OpenCL-compatible multithreaded hardware accelerators with dynamic support for embedded FPGAs

    ARTICo3 is an architecture that permits to dynamically set an arbitrary number of reconfigurable hardware accelerators, each containing a given number of threads fixed at design time according to High Level Synthesis constraints. However, the replication of these modules can be decided at runtime to accelerate kernels by increasing the overall number of threads, add modular redundancy to increase fault tolerance, or any combination of the previous. An execution scheduler is used at kernel invocation to deliver the appropriate data transfers, optimizing memory transactions, and sequencing or parallelizing execution according to the configuration specified by the resource manager of the architecture. The model of computation is compatible with the OpenCL kernel execution model, and memory transfers and architecture are arranged to match the same optimization criteria as for kernel execution in GPU architectures but, differently to other approaches, with dynamic hardware execution support. In this paper, a novel design methodology for multithreaded hardware accelerators is presented. The proposed framework provides OpenCL compatibility by implementing a memory model based on shared memory between host and compute device, which removes the overhead imposed by data transferences at global memory level, and local memories inside each accelerator, i.e. compute unit, which are connected to global memory through optimized DMA links. These local memories provide unified access, i.e. a continuous memory map, from the host side, but are divided in a configurable number of independent banks (to increase available ports) from the processing elements side to fully exploit data-level parallelism. Experimental results show OpenCL model compliance using multithreaded hardware accelerators and enhanced dynamic adaptation capabilities

    Low-power, high-speed FFT processor for MB-OFDM UWB application

    This paper presents a low-power, high-speed 4-data-path 128-point mixed-radix (radix-2 & radix-2 2 ) FFT processor for MB-OFDM Ultra-WideBand (UWB) systems. The processor employs the single-path delay feedback (SDF) pipelined structure for the proposed algorithm, it uses substructure-sharing multiplication units and shift-add structure other than traditional complex multipliers. Furthermore, the word lengths are properly chosen, thus the hardware costs and power consumption of the proposed FFT processor are efficiently reduced. The proposed FFT processor is verified and synthesized by using 0.13 µm CMOS technology with a supply voltage of 1.32 V. The implementation results indicate that the proposed 128-point mixed-radix FFT architecture supports a throughput rate of 1Gsample/s with lower power consumption in comparison to existing 128-point FFT architecture

    NoC Emulation based on Partial Reconfiguration

    This paper studies the possibly of using partial reconfiguration for achieving acceleration of the emulation process of Systems on Chip based on Networks on Chip (NoC). The main advantage of using partial reconfiguration is that re-synthesis of the systems is not required and thus the emulation process can be accelerated. The paper focuses on the description of a method for building partial runtime reconfigurable systems and its application for building a NoC emulation framework. The paper also includes a brief description of all the building elements of the emulation framework and a use case that demonstrates the advantages of the use of partial reconfiguration for emulation

    Power-Aware Multi-Objective Evolvable Hardware System on an FPGA

    Dynamic and Partial Reconfiguration (DPR) allows a system to be able to modify certain parts of itself during run-time. This feature gives rise to the capability of evolution: changing parts of the configuration according to the online evaluation of performance or other parameters. The evolution is achieved through a bio-inspired model in which the features of the system are identified as genes. The objective of the evolution may not be a single one; in this work, power consumption is taken into consideration, together with the quality of filtering, as the measure of performance, of a noisy image. Pareto optimality is applied to the evolutionary process, in order to find a representative set of optimal solutions as for performance and power consumption. The main contributions of this paper are: implementing an evolvable system on a low-power Spartan-6 FPGA included in a Wireless Sensor Network node and, by enabling the availability of a real measure of power consumption at run-time, achieving the capability of multi-objective evolution, that yields different optimal configurations, among which the selected one will depend on the relative “weights” of performance and power consumption

    A run time adaptive architecture to trade-off performance for fault tolerance applied to a DVB on-board processor

    Reliability is one of the key issues in space applications. Although highly flexible and generally less expensive than predominantly used ASICs, SRAM-based FPGAs are very susceptible to radiation effects. Hence, various fault tolerant techniques have to be applied in order to handle faults and protect the design. This paper presents a reconfigurable on-board processor capable of run-time adaptation to harsh environmental conditions and different functional demands. Run-time reconfigurability is achieved applying two different reconfiguration methodologies. We propose a novel self-reconfigurable architecture able to on demand duplicate or triplicate part of the design in order to form DMR and TMR structures. Moreover, we introduce two different approaches for voting the correct output. The first one is a traditional voter that adapts to different DMR/TMR domain positions whereas the second implies comparing the captured flip-flop values directly from the configuration memory read through ICAP. The comparison is done periodically by an embedded processor thus completely excluding the voting mechanism in hardware. The proposed run-time reconfiguration methodology provides savings in terms of device utilization, reconfiguration time, power consumption and significant reductions in the amount of rad-hard memory used by partial configurations

    Fast and compact evolvable systolic arrays on dynamically reconfigurable FPGAs

    Evolvable hardware may be considered as the result of a design methodology that employs an evolutionary algorithm to find an optimal solution to a given problem in the form of a digital circuit. Evolutionary algorithms typically require testing thousands of candidate solutions, taking long time to complete. It would be desirable to reduce this time to a few seconds for applications that require a fast adaptation to a problem. Also, it is important to consider architectures that may operate at high clock speeds in order to reach very speed-demanding situations. This paper presents an implementation on an FPGA of an evolvable hardware image filter based on a systolic array architecture that uses dynamic partial reconfiguration in order to change between different candidate solutions. The neighbor to neighbor connections of the array offer improved performance versus other approaches, like Cartesian Genetic Programming derived circuits. Time savings due to faster evaluation compensate the slower reconfiguration time compared with virtual reconfiguration approaches, but, at any rate, reconfiguration time has been improved also by reducing the elements to reconfigure to just the LUT contents of the configurable blocks. The techniques presented in this paper lead to circuits that may operate at up to 500 MHz (in a Virtex-5), filtering 500 megapixels per second, the processing element size of the array is reduced to 2 CLBs, and over 80000 evaluations per second in a multiplearray structure in an FPGA permit to obtain good quality filters in around 3 seconds of evolution time

    Using Partial Reconfiguration for SoC Design and Implementation

    Most reconfigurable systems rely on FPGA technology. Among these ones, those which permit dynamic and partial reconfiguration, offer added benefits in flexibility, in-field device upgrade, improved design and manufacturing time, and even, in some cases, power consumption reductions. However, dynamic reconfiguration is a complex task, and the real benefits of its use in real applications have been often questioned. This paper presents an overview of the partial reconfiguration technique application, along with four original applications. The main goal of these applications is to test several architectures with different flexibility and, to search for the partial reconfiguration "killing application", that is, the application that better demonstrates the benefits of today reconfigurable systems based on commercial FPGAs. Therefore, the presented applications are rather a proof of concept, than fully operative and closed systems. First, a brief introduction to the partial reconfigurable systems application topic has been included. After that, the descriptions of the created reconfigurable systems are presented: first, an on-chip communications emulation framework, second, an on chip debugging system, third, a wireless sensor network reconfigurable node and finally, a remote reconfigurable client-server device. Each application is described in a separate section of the paper along with some test and results. General conclusions are included at the end of the pape
