The Laffer Courve and government optimization of the tax revenues: The Cartagena de Indias case
The public managers worries to increase the local government revenues are almost always related with changes in the tax rates, affecting all the agents in the economy. However, at the same time tax exeptions are used like policy instrument in order to achieve economic growth in some sectors, increasing the pressure over some other sectors. This document analize the effect of the tax rates changes over the local government revenues by the estimation of elasticities. This relation is known as the Laffer Courve. The main results show an inelastic relation between the tax rate and the revenues, wich means that an increase of 1% in the tax rate generate an increase in local government revenues in less than a 1%. The results of the model sugesst that a local policy oriented to raise the local government revenues increasing the tax rate is not effective.Cartagena; local government revenues; tax rates; Laffer Courve
The manufacturing industry in the Colombian Caribbean 1990-1999 (in Spanish)
This article analyzes factors which, in light of the classical industrial location theory, account for the location of manufacturing industries in Colombia. The document shows how it is that agglomeration economies represent the paramount determiner which explains the localition choices of firms. The study was based upon data stemming from the Yearly Manufacture Survey through the use of 4-digit Standard International Industrial Classification disaggregation for Colombia’s 8 top metropolitan areas over the 1990-1999 term. The pattern, estimated by means of data panels, shows the effect exerted by variables such as work-related costs, land prices, taxpaying, income and agglomeration economies upon the location choices of manufacturing industries.industrial location; manufacturing industries ; agglomeration economies ; Colombia
Factors influencing demand for public transport in Colombia
The article studies the demand for public transport in Colombian cities, identifying the main determinants explaining market shares for transit services. We used aggregated choice models to estimate overall price, income, speed and frequency elasticities for urban public transport demand in the country. The model successfully accounts for unobservable information about attributes of alternative public transport modes. The results suggest high demand elasticities to price and frequency, while demand responds moderately to speed. We also find a negative income elasticity, which classifies public transport as an inferior good. Results provide relevant information for the current discussion about new transport systems in cities of developing countries, with a deeper understanding of the elements to consider in the design of public transport policies. © 2020 Elsevier Lt

Public transportation in Cartagena: what factors determine user preferences? (in Spanish)
This document analizes the preferences of public transportation system users in Cartagena de Indias - Colombia. The research uses related variables on transportation modes chosen by people and some other characteristics of the people who make such decisions. The analysis allows us to understand the behavior of public urban transportation system users in the city of Cartagena, and shows us evidence about some probable reasons associated with new informal public transportation modes, which at this moment play an important role in the public transportation market in the city. The research uses binary choice probabilistic models (Probit) and primary information collected by a survey for system users.Preferences; public transportation system; Cartagena de Indias; Colombia; transportation modes; probabilistic models; Probit

The Jigsaw Puzzle of Economical Research in the Colombian Caribbean: A Balance from the Past Decade (1996-2005) (in Spanish)
In this article it is realized an inventory of the production of academic and scientific articles about economics in Colombian Caribbean Coast in the last 10 years. The document analyses the scientific production in economics realized in the Caribbean Coast and about the Caribbean Coast, in order to establish a map of the regional economic research and realize an approximation to the accumulated production and the general tendencies of the publications. To accomplish this goal, it was used the JEL (Journal of Economic Literature) Classification System as a platform for completing the puzzle by topics. Among other aspects, the study shows that three non-university institutions are responsible for the 67% of the regional academic production about economics. 40% of total considered production was realized by the 10% of the Caribbean Coast researches. 51% of the JEL Classifications have not being approached by region researches. Finally, there are few institutions with a systemic and deep job in a specific topic, which is why there are many possibilities of specialization for institution that have not defined its research lines and want to be pioneers in some economic analysis topic.Regional Economy; Colombia; Caribbean coast; scientific article
