    Sleep Does not Help Relearning Declarative Memories in Older Adults

    International audienceHow sleep affects memory in older adults is a critical topic, since age significantly impacts both sleep and memory. For declarative memory, previous research reports contradictory results, with some studies showing sleep-dependent memory consolidation and some other not. We hypothesize that this discrepancy may be due to the use of recall as the memory measure, a demanding task for older adults. The present paper focuses on the effect of sleep on relearning, a measure that proved useful to reveal subtle, implicit memory effects. Previous research in young adults showed that sleeping after learning was more beneficial to relearning the same Swahili-French word pairs 12 hours later, compared with the same interval spent awake. In particular, those words that could not be recalled were relearned faster when participants previously slept. The effect of sleep was also beneficial for retention after a one-week and a 6-month delay. The present study used the same experimental design in older adults aged 71 on average but showed no significant effect of sleep on consolidation, on relearning, or on long-term retention. Thus, even when using relearning speed as the memory measure, the consolidating effect of sleep in older adults was not demonstrated, in alignment with some previous findings

    Body Mass Index Specifiers in Anorexia Nervosa: Anything below the "Extreme"?

    The validity of body mass index (BMI) specifiers for anorexia nervosa (AN) has been questioned, but their applicability to inpatients with extremely low BMIs and their prognostic validity are currently unknown. Therefore, we designed this study: (a) to test current BMI specifiers in severe inpatients; (b) to explore a “very extreme” specifier (VE-AN; BMI ≤ 13.5); and (c) to verify inpatients’ hospitalization outcome according to BMI severity. We enrolled 168 inpatients with AN completing the following: Eating disorder Examination-Questionnaire, Eating Disorder Inventory-2, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory, Body Shape Questionnaire, and EQ-5D-VAS. According to the current BMI classification, those with a BMI < 15 versus those with non-extreme AN (NE-AN, BMI ≥ 15) differed on all measures but the quality of life with those with NE-AN reporting more impaired scores on all measures. Adopting an exploratory classification comparing VE-AN, extreme AN (E-AN, BMI = 13.6–14.99), and NE-AN, no differences emerged between VE-AN and E-AN, while those with NE-AN reported significantly more impaired scores on all variables while the quality of life again did not differ across groups. Hospitalization outcome improved for all groups, independently of BMI. Groups differed concerning the length of stay that mirrored BMI severity and impacted also hospitalization outcomes. Taken together, our data support the lack of validity of current BMI specifiers in AN, even in the acute setting. Moreover, the exploratory subgroup of patients with BMI ≤ 13.5 did not delineate a clinically different group

    Gene-based microsatellite development for mapping and phylogeny studies in eggplant

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Eggplant (<it>Solanum melongena </it>L.) is a member of the <it>Solanaceae </it>family. In spite of its widespread cultivation and nutritional and economic importance, its genome has not as yet been extensively investigated. Few analyses have been carried out to determine the genetic diversity of eggplant at the DNA level, and linkage relationships have not been well characterised. As for the other <it>Solanaceae </it>crop species (potato, tomato and pepper), the level of intra-specific polymorphism appears to be rather limited, and so it is important that an effort is made to develop more informative DNA markers to make progress in understanding the genetics of eggplant and to advance its breeding. The aim of the present work was to develop a set of functional microsatellite (SSR) markers, via an <it>in silico </it>analysis of publicly available DNA sequence.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>From >3,300 genic DNA sequences, 50 SSR-containing candidates suitable for primer design were recovered. Of these, 39 were functional, and were then applied to a panel of 44 accessions, of which 38 were cultivated eggplant varieties, and six were from related <it>Solanum </it>species. The usefulness of the SSR assays for diversity analysis and taxonomic discrimination was demonstrated by constructing a phylogeny based on SSR polymorphisms, and by the demonstration that most were also functional when tested with template from tomato, pepper and potato. As a results of BLASTN analyses, several eggplant SSRs were found to have homologous counterparts in the phylogenetically related species, which carry microsatellite motifs in the same position.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The set of eggplant EST-SSR markers was informative for phylogenetic analysis and genetic mapping. Since EST-SSRs lie within expressed sequence, they have the potential to serve as perfect markers for genes determining variation in phenotype. Their high level of transferability to other <it>Solanaceae </it>species can be used to provide anchoring points for the integration of genetic maps across species.</p

    Robotic "Double Loop" Roux-en-Y gastric bypass reduces the risk of postoperative internal hernias: a prospective observational study

    BACKGROUND: Internal herniation (IH) is a potentially serious complication after laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). The aim of the study is to evaluate the incidence of IH after robot-assisted RYGB (RA-RYGB) performed with the “Double Loop” technique at our Institution. METHODS: Prospective cohort study of patients submitted to RA-RYGB with the “Double Loop” technique, with a minimum follow-up of 2 years. Patients with complaints of abdominal pain at clinical visits or entering the emergency department were evaluated. Primary outcome was the incidence of IH, defined as the presence of herniated bowel through a mesenteric defect, diagnosed at imaging or at surgical exploration. RESULTS: A total of 129 patients were included: 65 (50.4%) were primary procedures, while 64 (49.6%) were revisional operations after primary restrictive bariatric surgery. Mean age was 47.9 ± 10.2 years, mean weight, and body mass index were, respectively, 105.3 ± 22.6 kg and 39.7 ± 9.6 kg/m(2). Postoperative morbidity rate was 7.0%. Mean follow-up was 53.2 ± 22.6 (range 24–94) months. During the follow-up period, a total of 14 (10.8%) patients entered the emergency department: 1 patient had melena, 4 renal colic, 1 acute cholecystitis, 2 gynecologic pathologies, 2 anastomotic ulcers, 1 perforated gastric ulcer, 1 diverticulitis and 2 gastroenteritis. There were no diagnoses of IH. During the follow-up period, no patient experienced recurrence of symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: In the present study, the robotic approach confirms the low complication rate and absence of IH after “Double Loop” RA-RYGB in a large case-series at a medium-term follow-up
