    Model reduction of nonsquare linear MIMO systems using multipoint matrix continued-fraction expansions

    This paper deals with the multipoint Cauer matrix continued-fraction expansion (MCFE) for model reduction of linear multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems with various numbers of inputs and outputs. A salient feature of the proposed MCFE approach to model reduction of MIMO systems with square transfer matrices is its equivalence to the matrix Pade approximation approach. The Cauer second form of the ordinary MCFE for a square transfer function matrix is generalized in this paper to a multipoint and nonsquare-matrix version. An interesting connection of the multipoint Cauer MCFE method to the multipoint matrix Pade approximation method is established. Also, algorithms for obtaining the reduced-degree matrix-fraction descriptions and reduced-dimensional state-space models from a transfer function matrix via the multipoint Cauer MCFE algorithm are presented. Practical advantages of using the multipoint Cauer MCFE are discussed and a numerical example is provided to illustrate the algorithms

    Measuring Self-Identity Change Related to English Language Learning and Bilingual Education among Chinese-Speaking College Students: An Exploratory Study

    The purpose of this study is two-fold. First, we explored the psychometric properties of a self-identity change instrument that was previously developed for English learning college students in China. Second, using this instrument, we examined participants’ self-identity change related to gender, major, and years of English learning. A total of 273 undergraduate students from two adjacent geographic locations (Taiwan and mainland China) participated in a paper-based survey. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) revealed five sub-scales that were mainly consistent with the original version. However, the EFA also suggested exclusion of one item, multi-dimensionality, and room for improvement of this instrument regarding item reliability. Inferential statistics revealed that (a) students in Taiwan exhibited a higher self-confidence change as compared to their mainland peers; (b) English and bilingual science majors underwent higher change in additive and subtractive bilingualism, followed by art and humanity majors; (c) for bilingual majors, those who started learning English prior to grade 3 were better able to switch between two identities than those who started in middle school and beyond; and (d) gender is not a significant predictor of identity change. Discussion was contextualized within educational policy and practice regarding English learning and bilingual education in these two locations

    Dynamic Cerebral Autoregulation Remains Stable During the Daytime (8 a.m. to 8 p.m.) in Healthy Adults

    Many functions of the human body possess a daily rhythm, disruptions of which often lead to disease. Dynamic cerebral autoregulation (dCA) stabilizes the cerebral blood flow to prompt normal neural function. However, whether dCA is stable across the day remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the daily rhythm of dCA. Fifty-one healthy adults (38.294 ± 13.279 years, 40 females) were recruited and received six dCA measurements per individual that were conducted at predefined time points: 8:00, 9:00, 11:00, 14:00, 17:00, and 20:00. Although the blood pressure fluctuated significantly, there was no statistical difference in phase difference and gain (autoregulatory parameters) across the six time points. This study demonstrates that dCA remains stable during the interval from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and underscores the importance of stable dCA in maintaining cerebral blood flow and neural function

    Spectra of Baryons Containing Two Heavy Quarks in Potential Model

    In this work, we employ the effective vertices for interaction between diquarks (scalar or axial-vector) and gluon where the form factors are derived in terms of the B-S equation, to obtain the potential for baryons including a light quark and a heavy diquark. The concerned phenomenological parameters are obtained by fitting data of B()B^{(*)}-mesons instead of the heavy quarkonia. The operator ordering problem in quantum mechanics is discussed. Our numerical results indicate that the mass splitting between B3/2(V),B1/2(V)B_{3/2}(V), B_{1/2}(V) and B1/2(S)B_{1/2}(S) is very small and it is consistent with the heavy quark effective theory (HQET).Comment: 16 page

    Dynamic spin-lattice coupling and nematic fluctuations in NaFeAs

    We use inelastic neutron scattering to study acoustic phonons and spin excitations in single crystals of NaFeAs, a parent compound of iron pnictide superconductors. NaFeAs exhibits a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural transition at Ts58T_s\approx 58 K and a collinear antiferromagnetic (AF) order at TN45T_N\approx 45 K. While longitudinal and out-of-plane transverse acoustic phonons behave as expected, the in-plane transverse acoustic phonons reveal considerable softening on cooling to TsT_s, and then harden on approaching TNT_N before saturating below TNT_N. In addition, we find that spin-spin correlation lengths of low-energy magnetic excitations within the FeAs layer and along the cc-axis increase dramatically below TsT_s, and show weak anomaly across TNT_N. These results suggest that the electronic nematic phase present in the paramagnetic tetragonal phase is closely associated with dynamic spin-lattice coupling, possibly arising from the one-phonon-two-magnon mechanism
