Improved bounds on SUSY accompanied neutrinoless double beta decay
Neutrinoless double beta decay induced by light Majorana neutrino exchange
between two decaying nucleons with squark/slepton exchange inside one and W
exchange inside the other nucleon (so-called vector-scalar exchange) gives
stringent limits on R-parity violating interactions. We have extended previous
work by including the tensor contribution to the transition rate. We discuss
the improved limits on trilinear \Rp -MSSM couplings imposed by the current
experimental limit on the \znbb decay half-life of Ge.Comment: replaced by revised version to appear in Phys. Lett.

Reduced Visual Cortex Gray Matter Volume and Thickness in Young Adults Who Witnessed Domestic Violence during Childhood
Exposure to interparental violence is associated with negative outcomes, such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and reduced cognitive abilities. However, little is known about the potential effects of witnessing domestic violence during childhood on gray matter volume (GMV) or cortical thickness. High-resolution 3.0 T volumetric scans (Siemens Trio Scanner) were obtained on 52 subjects (18–25 years) including 22 (6 males/16 females) with a history of visually witnessing episodes of domestic violence, and 30 (8 males/22 females) unexposed control subjects, with neither a current nor past DSM-IV Axis I or II disorder. Potential confounding effects of age, gender, level of parental verbal aggression, parental education, financial stress, full scale IQ, and total GMV, or average thickness were modeled using voxel based morphometry and FreeSurfer. Witnessing domestic violence subjects had a 6.1% GMV reduction in the right lingual gyrus (BA18) (P = 0.029, False Discovery Rate corrected peak level). Thickness in this region was also reduced, as was thickness in V2 bilaterally and left occipital pole. Theses regions were maximally sensitive to exposure to witnessing domestic violence between 11–13 years of age. Regional reductions in GMV and thickness were observed in both susceptible and resilient witnessing domestic violence subjects. Results in subjects witnessing domestic violence were similar to previously reported results in subjects with childhood sexual abuse, as the primary region affected was visual cortex. Brain regions that process and convey the adverse sensory input of the abuse may be specifically modified by this experience, particularly in subjects exposed to a single type of maltreatment. Exposure to multiple types of maltreatment is more commonly associated with morphological alterations in corticolimbic regions. These findings fit with preclinical studies showing that visual cortex is a highly plastic structure
The Single State Dominance Hypothesis and the Two-Neutrino Double Beta Decay of Mo100
The hypothesis of the single state dominance (SSD) in the calculation of the
two-neutrino double beta decay of Mo100 is tested by exact consideration of the
energy denominators of the perturbation theory. Both transitions to the ground
state as well as to the 0+ and 2+ excited states of the final nucleus Ru100 are
considered. We demonstrate, that by experimental investigation of the single
electron energy distribution and the angular correlation of the outgoing
electrons, the SSD hypothesis can be confirmed or ruled out by a precise
two-neutrino double beta decay measurement (e.g. by NEMO III collaboration).Comment: 13 pages, RevTex, 1 figur
A Novel Role for Niemann-Pick Disease Type 2C Protein in Papillae Formation
BACKGROUND: Despite the presence of papillary structures and papillary tumors in humans, the mechanism of papillae formation is unknown. We describe herein a novel role for Niemann-Pick disease type 2C (NPC2) protein, a cholesterol binding protein in the lysosome, in papillae formation. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDING: We examined NPC2 protein expression in surgical samples of papillary tissues by immunohistochemical stain, and all papillary tissues expressed NPC2 protein in the epithelium. To examine our hypothesis of NPC2 protein-mediated papillae formation, we carried out xenograft experiments using wild H460 cells (large cell lung carcinoma cell line) that constitutively expressed abundant NPC2 protein and NPC2 protein-depleted H460 cells by NPC2 shRNA. The xenografts of wild H460 cells and empty shRNA vector cells showed distinct papillae formation, whereas NPC2 protein-depleted H460 cells displayed markedly reduced or no papillae. Since all papillary tissues have open spaces we examined whether NPC2 protein might also contribute to the creation of open spaces. The TUNEL assay in the xenografts of wild and empty shRNA vector H460 cells showed massive cell death, and NPC2 protein-depleted cells displayed minimal cell death. Measurement of caspase 3/7 activities in cultured H460 cells supported NPC2 protein-mediated apoptotic cell death. The presence of excess NPC2 protein, however, did not always produce papillae as seen in the xenografts of CHO cells that were stably transfected with NPC2. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: The NPC2 protein of certain cells forms papillae coupled with apoptosis that creates open space. This protein may have future applications to modulate papillae formation and papillary growth in tumor tissues
Shell Model Study of the Double Beta Decays of Ge, Se and Xe
The lifetimes for the double beta decays of Ge, Se and
Xe are calculated using very large shell model spaces. The two neutrino
matrix elements obtained are in good agreement with the present experimental
data. For eV we predict the following upper bounds to the
half-lives for the neutrinoless mode: , and . These results are the first from a new generation of Shell
Model calculations reaching O(10) dimensions
Diagnosis of infections in newborns using a new particle-mediated immunoassay for serum C-reactive protein
C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were measured using a new particle-mediated immunoassay. Tests for precision and linearity of this method gave satisfactory results. The minimum sensitivity of the assay was 1 ng/ml. Interference by bilirubin (<220mg/l) and haemoglobin (<20g/l) was not observed. Using this method,
CRP was assayed as a means of monitoring for infection in newborns up to 72 h after delivery. The pattern of time course elevation curves was similar for both groups (10 healthy subjects and 26 patients), but the serum CRP (ng/ml) of infected newborns rose significantly higher than in healthy subjects at 24 h after birth. The rate of increase of CRP (∆CRP; ng/ml/h) may be a more useful parameter to detect infection, since a significant change in ∆CRP was apparent only 12 h after birth. The reported method was reliable and the parameters obtained were considered clinically useful for early detection of infection
Determination of hemispheric emotional valence in individual subjects: A new approach with research and therapeutic implications
BACKGROUND: Much has been theorized about the emotional properties of the hemispheres. Our review of the dominant hypotheses put forth by Schore, Joseph, Davidson, and Harmon-Jones on hemispheric emotional valences (HEV) shows that none are supported by robust data. Instead, we propose that individual's hemispheres are organized to have differing HEVs that can be lateralized in either direction. METHODS: Probe auditory evoked potentials (AEP) recorded during a neutral and an upsetting memory were used to assess HEV in 28 (20 F) right-handed subjects who were either victims of childhood maltreatment (N = 12) or healthy controls. In a sub-population, we determined HEV by emotional response to lateral visual field stimulation (LVFS), in which vision is limited to one, then the other hemifield. We compare a number of morphometric and functional brain measures between individuals who have right-negative versus left-negative HEV. RESULTS: Using AEPs to determine HEV, we found 62% of controls and 67% of maltreated subjects had right negative HEV. There was a strong interaction between HEV-laterality and gender, which together accounted for 60% of individual variability in total grey matter volume (GMV). HEV-laterality was associated with differences in hippocampal volume, amygdala/hippocampal ratios, and measures of verbal, visual and global memory. HEV-laterality was associated also with different constellations of symptoms comparing maltreated subjects to controls. Emotional response to LVFS provided a convenient and complementary measure of HEV-laterality that correlated significantly with the HEVs determined by AEPs. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that HEV-laterality, like handedness or gender, is an important individual difference with significant implications for brain and behavioral research, and for guiding lateralized treatments such as rTMS
