    Non-standard interactions versus non-unitary lepton flavor mixing at a neutrino factory

    The impact of heavy mediators on neutrino oscillations is typically described by non-standard four-fermion interactions (NSIs) or non-unitarity (NU). We focus on leptonic dimension-six effective operators which do not produce charged lepton flavor violation. These operators lead to particular correlations among neutrino production, propagation, and detection non-standard effects. We point out that these NSIs and NU phenomenologically lead, in fact, to very similar effects for a neutrino factory, for completely different fundamental reasons. We discuss how the parameters and probabilities are related in this case, and compare the sensitivities. We demonstrate that the NSIs and NU can, in principle, be distinguished for large enough effects at the example of non-standard effects in the μ\mu-τ\tau-sector, which basically corresponds to differentiating between scalars and fermions as heavy mediators as leading order effect. However, we find that a near detector at superbeams could provide very synergistic information, since the correlation between source and matter NSIs is broken for hadronic neutrino production, while NU is a fundamental effect present at any experiment.Comment: 32 pages, 5 figures.     Non-rigid Image Registration Using Graph-cuts

    Abstract. Non-rigid image registration is an ill-posed yet challenging problem due to its supernormal high degree of freedoms and inherent requirement of smoothness. Graph-cuts method is a powerful combinatorial optimization tool which has been successfully applied into image segmentation and stereo matching. Under some specific constraints, graph-cuts method yields either a global minimum or a local minimum in a strong sense. Thus, it is interesting to see the effects of using graph-cuts in nonrigid image registration. In this paper, we formulate non-rigid image registration as a discrete labeling problem. Each pixel in the source image is assigned a displacement label (which is a vector) indicating which position in the floating image it is spatially corresponding to. A smoothness constraint based on first derivative is used to penalize sharp changes in displacement labels across pixels. The whole system can be optimized by using the graph-cuts method via alpha-expansions. We compare 2D and 3D registration results of our method with two state-of-the-art approaches. It is found that our method is more robust to different challenging non-rigid registration cases with higher registration accuracy.

    Cognitive screening in treatment-naïve HIV-infected individuals in Hong Kong – a single center study

    Abstract Background HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND) remains prevalent in the era of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART). The prevalence of HAND in Hong Kong is not known. Methods Between 2013 and 2015, 98 treatment-naïve HIV-1-infected individuals were referred to and screened by the AIDS Clinical Service, Queen Elizabeth Hospital with (1) the International HIV Dementia Scale (IHDS), a screening tool that targets moderate to severe HAND, (2) the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), a frequently used cognitive screening test and (3) the Patient Health Questionnare-9 (PHQ-9), a 9-item questionnaire that evaluates depression symptoms. Within the study period, 57 of them completed the second set of IHDS and MoCA at 6 months after baseline assessment. Results Most participants were male (94%), with a median age of 31 years. At baseline, 38 (39%) and 25 (26%) of them scored below the IHDS (≤10) and MoCA (25/26) cut-offs respectively. Poor IHDS performers also scored lower on MoCA (p = 0.039) but the correlation between IHDS and MoCA performance was weak (r = 0.29, p = 0.004). Up to a third of poor IHDS performers (13/38) showed moderate depression (PHQ-9 > 9). In the multivariable analysis, a lower education level (p = 0.088), a history of prior psychiatric illness (p = 0.091) and the presence of moderate depression (p = 0.079) tended to be significantly associated with poor IHDS performance. At follow-up, 54 out of 57 were on cART, of which 46 (85%) had achieved viral suppression. Their blood CD4+ T-lymphocytes and IHDS scores were higher at follow-up compared to baseline values (both p < 0.001) but their MoCA performance was similar at both assessments. Of note, 17 participants in this subgroup scored below the IHDS cut-off at both assessments. Conclusions Poor IHDS performance, and likely cognitive impairment, was frequently observed in treatment-naïve HIV-infected individuals in our locality. A considerable proportion continued to score below the IHDS cut-off at 6 months after cART. Depression was frequently observed in this vulnerable population and was associated with poor IHDS performance

    The effects of linguistic factors on student performance on economics multiple choice questions

    This paper proposes a framework to analyse performance on multiple choice questions with the focus on linguistic factors. Item Response Theory (IRT) is deployed to estimate ability and question difficulty levels. A logistic regression model is used to detect Differential Item Functioning questions. Probit models testify relationships between performance and linguistic factors controlling the effects of question construction and students’ background. Empirical results have important implications. The lexical density of stems affects performance. The use of non-Economics specialised vocabulary has differing impacts on the performance of students with different language backgrounds. The IRT-based ability and difficulty help explain performance variations

    Effects of syphilis infection among HIV-1-positive individuals on suppressive antiretroviral therapy

    Abstract Introduction Incident syphilis leads to changes in plasma HIV-1 RNA and CD4 + T-cell level in people with HIV (PWH) with viraemia. Its effect in PWH on suppressive antiretroviral therapy (ART) is less clear. Methods PWH on suppressive ART (plasma HIV-1 RNA < 50copies/mL) followed at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Hong Kong, China were regularly screened for syphilis. Their plasma HIV-1 RNA, CD4 + and CD8 + T-cell, and total lymphocyte levels before syphilis, during syphilis, and after successful treatment were compared. Results Between 2005 and 2020, 288 syphilis episodes from 180 individuals were identified; 287 episodes were related to male, with a median age of 41 at diagnosis; 221 (77%) were syphilis re-infection. The rates of plasma HIV-1 suppression were statistically unchanged across the time-points (97% pre-syphilis, 98% during syphilis, and 99% post-treatment). Total lymphocyte, CD4+ and CD8+ T-cell levels decreased during incident syphilis (p<0.01), and rebounded post-treatment (p<0.01). VDRL titre was associated with declines in CD4+ T-cell (p=0.045), CD8+ T-cell (p=0.004), and total lymphocyte levels (p=0.021). Pre-syphilis CD4/CD8 ratio was associated with increases in CD8+ T-cell (p=0.001) and total lymphocyte levels (p=0.046) during syphilis. Syphilis re-infection was associated with an increase in total lymphocyte level (p=0.037). In the multivariable analysis, only pre-syphilis CD4/CD8 ratio was independently associated with increases in CD8+ T-cell (p=0.014) and total lymphocyte levels (p=0.039) during syphilis. Conclusions Among virally-suppressed PWH, total lymphocyte, CD4+, and CD8+ T-cell levels declined during incident syphilis but rebounded post-treatment.     A novel dirofilaria species causing human and canine infections in Hong Kong

    Dirofilariasis is globally the commonest manifestation of zoonotic filariasis. We report the detection of a novel canine species causing human and canine dirofilariasis in Hong Kong. Three human cases occurring over 10 months were identified, one presenting with cervical lymphadenopathy, one with an abdominal subcutaneous mass, and one with a subconjunctival nodule. Transected worms recovered from the resected abdominal subcutaneous mass were morphologically compatible with Dirofilaria. The cox1 gene sequences of the three human isolates were identical; however, they were only 96.2% and 89.3% identical to the cox1 gene of Dirofilaria repens and Dirofilaria immitis, respectively. Sequencing of the 18S-ITS1-5.8S gene cluster was successful in the intact worm, and the nucleotide sequences were 94.0% and 94.9% identical to those of D. repens and D. immitis, respectively. Screening of the blood samples from 200 dogs and 100 cats showed the presence of the novel Dirofilaria species in 3% (6/200) of the dogs' but none of the cats' blood samples. Nucleotide sequences of the cox1 gene and 18S-ITS1-5.8S gene clusters of the dogs' samples were identical to those in the human samples. The sera of canines infected by this novel Dirofilaria species were negative when tested with the SNAP 4Dx D. immitis detection kit, except in the case of dogs with a mixed infection with D. immitis as detected by PCR. The results from this study suggest that this novel Dirofilaria species is a cause of filarial infection in humans and dogs in Hong Kong.     Reduced and Oxidized Forms of the Pt-Organometallic Version of Polyaniline

    This work represents an effort to synthesize all four forms of polyaniline (PANI) in its organometallic versions. Polymers containing substituted 1,4-benzoquinone diimine or 1,4-diaminobenzene units in the backbone exhibiting the general structure (C CC6H4-N=C6X4=N-C6H4C C-PtL2) and (C CC6H4NH-C6X4NHC6H4C C-PtL2) along with the corresponding model compounds (C CC6H4-N=C6X4=N-C6H4C C)-(PtL2Cl)(2) and (C CC6H4NH-C6X4-NHC6H4C C)-(PtL2Cl)(2) (L = PBu3; X = H, F, Cl) were synthesized. The polymers and corresponding model compounds were characterized (including H-1 and P-31 NMR, IR, mass spectra, elemental analysis, and X-ray structure determinations) and investigated for their redox properties in the absence and in the presence of acid. Their optical properties, including ns transient spectroscopy were also investigated. These properties were interpreted through density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) computations. These materials are found to be oligomers (GPC) with thermal stability (TGA) reaching 350 degrees C. The greatest stabilities were found in the cases with X = F. Using a data bank of 8 X-ray structures of diimine derivatives, a relationship between the C=N bond distance and the dihedral angle between the benzoquinone ring and the flanking phenyl planes is noted. As the size of the substituent X on the benzoquinone center increases, the degree of conjugation decreases as demonstrated by the C=N bond length. The largest dihedral angles are noted for X = Cl. These polymers exhibit drastic chemical differences when X is varied (X = H, F, Cl). The completely reduced polymer (C CC6H4NH-C6H4-NHC6H4C C-PtL2) (i.e., X = H) was not chemically accessible whereas in the cases of X = F, Cl, these materials were obtained and represent the first examples of fully reduced organometallic versions of PANI (i.e., leucoemaraldine). For the (C CC6H4-N=C6X4=N-C6H4C C-PtL2) polymers, the completely oxidized form for X = H was isolated (pemigraniline), but for X = F and Cl, only the largely reduced mixed-valence form (i.e., emaraldine) was obtained via chemical routes. In acidic solutions, the chemically accessible polymer for X = H, (C CC6H4-N=C6H4=N-C6H4C C-PtL2), exhibits two chemically reversible waves indicating that the reduced form (C CC6H4NH-C6H4-NHC6H4C C-PtL2) can be generated. The absorption spectra of the highly colored diimine-containing species exhibit a broad charge transfer band (assigned based on DFT calculations (B3LYP); C6H4C C-PtL2-C CC6H4 -> N=C6X4=N) in the 450-800 nm window red shifting according X = H -> Cl -> F, consistent with their relative inductive effect. The largest absorptivity is measured for X = H because this polymer is fully oxidized whereas for the cases where X = F and Cl, these polymers exists in the mixed valence form. The ns transient absorption spectra of two polymers (X = F; reduced and mixed-valence polymers) were measured. The triplet excited state in the mixed-valence polymer is dominated by the reduced diamine residue and the T-1-T-n absorption of the diimine is entirely quenched
