    Iron Doped SBA-15 Mesoporous Silica Studied by Mössbauer Spectroscopy

    Mesoporous silica SBA-15 containing propyl-iron-phosphonate groups were considered to confirm their molecular structure. To detect the iron-containing group configuration the Mössbauer spectroscopy was used. Both mesoporous silica SBA-15 containing propyl-iron-phosphonate groups and pure doping agent (iron acetylacetate) were investigated using Mössbauer spectroscopy. The parameters such as isomer shift, quadrupole splitting, and asymmetry in 57Fe Mössbauer spectra were analyzed. The differences in Mössbauer spectra were explained assuming different local surroundings of Fe nuclei. On this base we were able to conclude about activation of phosphonate units by iron ions and determinate the oxidation state of the metal ion. To examine bonding between iron atoms and phosphonic units the resonance Raman spectroscopy was applied. The density functional theory (DFT) approach was used to make adequate calculations. The distribution of active units inside silica matrix was estimated by comparison of calculated vibrational spectra with the experimental ones. Analysis of both Mössbauer and resonance Raman spectra seems to confirm the correctness of the synthesis procedure. Also EDX elemental analysis confirms our conclusions

    The comparison between the results of treatment of patients after ACL reconstruction using double-folded semitendinosus and gracilis tendons and quadruple-folded semitendinosus tendon

    Introduction. Injuries of knee are considered as a significant clinical issue according to difficulties in diagnostics, therapy and rehabilitation of patients. One of the most common pathologies are injuries of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), which represent  around 90% of all damages. There are four basic mechanisms of ACL injury, but the most common are sudden hyperextension and internal rotation of the lower leg outside the physiological range of movements. Breaking of ACL in young and active people is undisputable indication for surgery – failure to do so leads to further damages of menisci and to osteoarthritis.Purpose of research. The aim of this study was to compare the long-term outcomes of ACL reconstruction with the use of the technique of double-folded tendons of semitendinosus and gracilis musles and quadruple-folded tendon of semitendinosus muscle.Materials and methods. A retrospective study consisted of two stages. The results of the post-reconstructive knee rehabilitation opinion survey and postoperative records were analyzed. The study examined 46 patients aged 19-59 years, hospitalized in the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology SPSK4 in Lublin.Results. In order to better visualize the results, the patients were divided into four groups, depending on the KOOS score. Statistically significant, in favor of double-folded tendons of semitendinosus and gracilis muscles, were patient’s assessments of the condition in two categories: presence and severity of pain and specific symptoms. The statistically insignificant result was obtained for the parameters: the possibility of active sports, the effects on daily activities and the general quality of life.Conclusions. The relationship between the technique used and the patient experiencing pain and specific symptoms was found. Patients undergoing surgery using double-folded semitendinosus and gracilis muscles experienced lesser symptoms

    Hypoxia Due to Cardiac Arrest Induces a Time-Dependent Increase in Serum Amyloid β Levels in Humans

    Amyloid β (Aβ) peptides are proteolytic products from amyloid precursor protein (APP) and are thought to play a role in Alzheimer disease (AD) pathogenesis. While much is known about molecular mechanisms underlying cerebral Aβ accumulation in familial AD, less is known about the cause(s) of brain amyloidosis in sporadic disease. Animal and postmortem studies suggest that Aβ secretion can be up-regulated in response to hypoxia. We employed a new technology (Single Molecule Arrays, SiMoA) capable of ultrasensitive protein measurements and developed a novel assay to look for changes in serum Aβ42 concentration in 25 resuscitated patients with severe hypoxia due to cardiac arrest. After a lag period of 10 or more hours, very clear serum Aβ42 elevations were observed in all patients. Elevations ranged from approximately 80% to over 70-fold, with most elevations in the range of 3–10-fold (average approximately 7-fold). The magnitude of the increase correlated with clinical outcome. These data provide the first direct evidence in living humans that ischemia acutely increases Aβ levels in blood. The results point to the possibility that hypoxia may play a role in the amyloidogenic process of AD

    Extremely intensive development of technology has resulted in many innovations. There are new methods of acquiring spatial data, such as laser scanning, unmanned aerial vehicles or digital non-metric cameras, which are the subject of this study. Integration of this data has become a new tool that has expanded existing measurement capabilities, finding applications in 3D modelling, archaeology and monument conservation. Owing to scanning, we can get the coordinates of almost every point of the scanned surface, obtaining full and detailed information about the object dimensions. The level of technical advancement of digital cameras allows them to be successfully used in short-range photogrammetry [27], and recently also in low-altitude aerial photogrammetry (unmanned aerial vehicles). Two different test objects were selected to achieve the intended purpose. The monument located on the 14-meter-high top of the Wanda Mound was adopted as the first object. It consists of a simple rectangular plinth made of brown marble. On its top there is a figure of an eagle with a crown of white marble. On the west wall of the plinth there is an inscription “Wanda” and a drawing showing a sword crossed with a distaff. The following features supported the choice of the monument: interesting shape of the object, which includes both simple geometric forms with large and flat surfaces (plinth), and more detailed surfaces (figure of an eagle); detailed texture of the object (complicated marble veins, wing details). The second object under study was The Helena Modrzejewska National Stary Theatre. The building was rebuilt in the style of Viennese Art Nouveau, so that it fully incorporates into the rest of buildings. Measurements included data obtained from a non-metric camera, Leica ScanStation scanner and DJI S 1000 multi-rotor.Niezwykle intensywny rozwój technologii od początku obecnego stulecia, zaowocował wieloma innowacjami, również w dziedzinie geodezji i kartografii, a w szczególności w zakresie fotogrametrii i teledetekcji. Oprócz ewolucji znanych już form pomiarów jak przejście ze zobrazowań analogowych na cyfrowe, pojawiły się też nowe metody pozyskiwania danych przestrzennych jak skaning laserowy, bezzałogowe statki powietrzne czy cyfrowe kamery niemetryczne, będące przedmiotem niniejszego opracowania. Integracja tych danych stała się nowym narzędziem, które rozszerzyło dotychczasowe możliwości pomiarowe, jak również znalazło zastosowanie poza branżą geodezyjną, na przykład w modelowaniu 3D, archeologii czy konserwacji zabytków. Dzięki skaningowi otrzymujemy współrzędne niemal każdego punktu skanowanej powierzchni w dowolnym miejscu, nawet już po zakończeniu pomiaru i opuszczeniu obiektu. Otrzymujemy zatem pełną i szczegółową informację o wymiarach obiektu, o znajdującej się wewnątrz infrastrukturze niekiedy trudno dostępnej bądź skomplikowanej. Poziom zaawansowania technicznego aparatów cyfrowych pozwala już od kilkunastu lat na stosowanie ich z powodzeniem w fotogrametrii bliskiego zasięgu [27], a od niedawna także i w fotogrametrii lotniczej niskiego pułapu (bezzałogowe statki powietrzne). Bezzałogowe statki powietrzne okazują się świetnym narzędziem wspomagającym proces zbierania danych o wysokorozdzielczych metrycznych zdjęciach elewacji budynków.     The aim of this work was to investigate serum and milk levels of tryptophan (TRP), kynurenine (KYN), and kynurenic acid (KYNA), as well as the activity of indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) in cows with mastitis due to Prototheca algae. The study was prompted by previous research showing a link between the KYN pathway of TRP metabolism and bovine mastitis of bacterial etiology. The study was carried out over a 2-year period (2018–2019) and included quarter milk and serum samples collected from six dairy herds in Poland. The samples were obtained from healthy cows and cows with Prototheca mastitis of either clinical and subclinical manifestation, as determined upon direct measurement of the somatic cell count or indirectly by performing a California Mastitis Test on suspected quarters. Both TRP and KYN concentrations were significantly lower in milk of mastitic cows compared to healthy animals (0.8 vs. 8.72 µM, p = 0.001; 0.07 vs. 0.32 µM, p = 0.001, respectively). The difference in TRP and KYN concentrations in the sera of the two animal groups was much less pronounced (25.55 vs. 27.57 µM, 3.03 vs. 3.56 nM, respectively). The concentration of KYNA was almost at the same level in milk (1.73 vs. 1.70 nM) and in serum (80.47 vs. 75.48 nM) of both mastitic and healthy cows. The data showed that the level of TRP and its metabolites in serum was conspicuously higher compared to milk in all cows under the study. The activity of IDO was significantly higher in milk of cows with Prototheca mastitis compared to healthy animals (71.4 vs. 40.86, p < 0.05), while in serum it was pretty much the same (135.94 vs. 124.98, p > 0.05). The IDO activity differed significantly between serum and milk both for mastitic (135.94 vs. 71.4, p < 0.05) and healthy cows (124.98 vs. 40.86, p < 0.001). In conclusion, low values of TRP and KYN concentrations or elevated IDO activity in milk samples might be used as markers of mastitis due to infectious causes, including Prototheca spp

Velocity and heat transfer profiles were computed to determine the optimal configuration of heat evacuation using a liquid coolant. In this simulation, water is forced over the bulb to evacuate the large amount of heat that the HPS system produces. The results obtained show the velocity and heat transfer profiles for varying geometries of the HPS bulb. These conclusions can be used to optimize both the flow of coolant and the position of the inlet and outlet on the outer jacket to maximize operating efficiency

Przedstawiono stan obecny, jak również prognozy rozwoju rynków fotowoltaiki i trendów panujących na rynku maszyn elektrycznych. Scharakteryzowano generację rozproszoną, czym jest i jakie podaje się jej definicje. Kolejno opisano proces produkcji energii elektrycznej przy wykorzystaniu promieniowania słonecznego i ogniw PV. Pokrótce przedstawiono zasadę działania ogniw PV i wymieniono ich ewolucję w postaci kilku generacji różniących się od siebie wykorzystanymi do produkcji materiałami, jak również technologiami wykonania poszczególnych elementów całego modułu PV. Ponadto skupiono się na cechach i parametrach, jakimi powinny się odznaczać nowoczesne maszyny elektryczne, do których należą m.in.: funkcje sterowania, interfejsy komunikacyjne, filtry harmonicznych, szybkość reakcji na zmianę wartości zadanej lub obciążenia, panel operatorski, integracja funkcji bezpieczeństwa, wbudowane algorytmy sterowania, miniaturyzacja i zwiększanie odporności środowiskowej czy jakże ważna obecnie energooszczędność. W pracy przedstawiono analizę i prognozy zmian zachodzących zarówno w sektorze energetycznym, jak również związanym z maszynami i napędami elektrycznymi.The article discusses issues related to the possibility of using electric machines in systems powered by energy coming from distributed generation, with an emphasis on photovoltaic systems. The current state as well as forecasts for development of photovoltaic markets and trends prevailing on the market of electric machines were presented. Distributed generation was characterized, what it is and what are their definitions. What is more, the process of electric energy production using solar radiation and PV cells was described. The principle of operation of the PV cell was briefly described and their evolution was mentioned in the form of several generations that differ from each other with used materials in the production process as well as technologies used for the implementation of individual elements of the entire PV module. Moreover, the focus was put on the features and parameters that should be distinguished by modern electric machines, which include, among others: control functions, communication interfaces, harmonic filters, response speed to a set point or load change, operator panel, integration of safety functions, builtin control algorithms, miniaturization, increasing environmental resilience or the currently very important topic related to energy efficiency.
