Osteoporosis prevention in postmenopausal female workers : Beneficial effects of silicon dietary supplementation on oxidative status. A pilot study
In the last years, the employment of ageing women is increased, and the well-being of these workers, together with the prevention of chronic disabling diseases, is an issue of great importance. Moreover, as postmenopausal ageing is associated with the loss of bone density and consequent increased fracture risk, promoting bone health in these women could be the best strategy for avoiding osteoporotic fractures. We aimed to evaluate the effects of 3-month supplementation with a commercial antioxidant product containing Silica on oxidative status and bone markers in a sample of Italian female workers. Subjects were menopausal and osteopenic women (N=29, age 59.34\ub16.37, mean BMI 26.19\ub14.01 kg/m2). At baseline (T0) and after three-month treatment (T1) bone mineral density (BMD) was evaluated by phalangeal osteosonogrammetry. Haematological, serum biochemical parameters, reactive oxygen species (ROS), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), oxydated low-density lipoproteins (oxLDL) and urinary cross-links pyridinoline (PYD) and deoxypyridinoline (DPD) were assessed. Parametric or non-parametric tests were performed at T0 and T1. To analyse the possible association between two variables a linear correlation test was performed. At T0, slightly high levels of ROS (86% of subjects), oxLDL (59%), Total Cholesterol (T-Chol) (90%) and LDL-Chol (59%) were observed, together with suboptimal or deficient 25-OH vitamin D (98%) concentrations. At T1, oxLDL levels and the ratio oxLDL/LDL-Chol significantly decreased (p<0.01). At T0 significant negative correlations between BMD T-score and cross-links were observed (DPD/Crea: r=-0.57, p=0.001; PYD/ Crea: r=-0.45, p=0.01). At T1, a significant reduction (p=0.03) was observed only for DPD (\u3bcg/L) but not for cross-links normalized by creatinine amounts. In conclusion 3-months Silica supplementation improves significantly oxidative status and bone resorption markers in most postmenopausal female workers, representing a complementary treatment for early phases of BMD reduction

We demonstrate terahertz (THz) imaging and spectroscopy of a 15x15-mm^2
single-layer graphene film on Si using broadband THz pulses. The THz images
clearly map out the THz carrier dynamics of the graphene-on-Si sample, allowing
us to measure sheet conductivity with sub-mm resolution without fabricating
electrodes. The THz carrier dynamics are dominated by intraband transitions and
the THz-induced electron motion is characterized by a flat spectral response. A
theoretical analysis based on the Fresnel coefficients for a metallic thin film
shows that the local sheet conductivity varies across the sample from {\sigma}s
= 1.7x10^-3 to 2.4x10^-3 {\Omega}^-1 (sheet resistance, {\rho}s = 420 - 590

Protein carbonyl group content in patients affected by familiar chronic nail candidiasis.
Familiar chronic nail candidiasis (FCNC) is a rare disorder characterized by early-onset infections caused by different species of Candida, restricted to the nail of the hands and feet, and associated with a low serum concentration of intercellular adhesion molecule 1. Host defense mechanisms against candidiasis require the cooperation of many immune cells through several candidacidal mechanisms, including oxygen-dependent killing mechanisms, mediated by a superoxide anion radical myeloperoxidase--H2O2--halide system, and reactive nitrogen intermediates. We analyzed protein carbonyl groups (considered a useful marker of oxidative stress) in the serum of patients belonging to a five-generation Italian family with an isolated form of FCNC. Serum protein carbonyl groups in FCNC patients were significantly lower than those measured in healthy donors. Also, if this hypothesis is merely speculative, we could suggest that the decreased circulating level of protein carbonyl groups in these patients is not a marker of a lower oxidative stress condition, but might be linked to a lower protease activity
Updating the mediterranean diet pyramid towards sustainability: focus on environmental concerns
Background: Nowadays the food production, supply and consumption chain represent a major cause of ecological pressure on the natural environment, and diet links worldwide human health with environmental sustainability. Food policy, dietary guidelines and food security strategies need to evolve from the limited historical approach, mainly focused on nutrients and health, to a new one considering the environmental, socio-economic and cultural impact—and thus the sustainability—of diets. Objective: To present an updated version of the Mediterranean Diet Pyramid (MDP) to reflect multiple environmental concerns. Methods: We performed a revision and restructuring of the MDP to incorporate more recent findings on the sustainability and environmental impact of the Mediterranean Diet pattern, as well as its associations with nutrition and health. For each level of the MDP we provided a third dimension featuring the corresponding environmental aspects related to it. Conclusions: The new environmental dimension of the MDP enhances food intake recommendations addressing both health and environmental issues. Compared to the previous 2011 version, it emphasizes more strongly a lower consumption of red meat and bovine dairy products, and a higher consumption of legumes and locally grown eco-friendly plant foods as much as possible

The purpose of this article is to outline the pathophysiology and epidemiology of arthritis of the base of the thumb. The usual presentation and diagnosis will be discussed along with the current conservative treatment options. Surgical treatment options are determined by the stage of the arthritis as well as the demands of the patient. The current standard surgical treatment options will be reviewed along with their results in the literature
Increased impedance near cut-off in plasma-like media leading to emission of high-power, narrow-bandwidth radiation
Ultra-intense, narrow-bandwidth, electromagnetic pulses have become important tools for exploring the characteristics of matter. Modern tuneable high-power light sources, such as free-electron lasers and vacuum tubes, rely on bunching of relativistic or near-relativistic electrons in vacuum. Here we present a fundamentally different method for producing narrow-bandwidth radiation from a broad spectral bandwidth current source, which takes advantage of the inflated radiation impedance close to cut-off in a medium with a plasma-like permittivity. We find that by embedding a current source in this cut-off region, more than an order of magnitude enhancement of the radiation intensity is obtained compared with emission directly into free space. The method suggests a simple and general way to flexibly use broadband current sources to produce broad or narrow bandwidth pulses. As an example, we demonstrate, using particle-in-cell simulations, enhanced monochromatic emission of terahertz radiation using a two-colour pumped current source enclosed by a tapered waveguide.ope

Proteome Serological Determination of Tumor-Associated Antigens in Melanoma
Proteome serology may complement expression library-based approaches as strategy utilizing the patients' immune responses for the identification pathogenesis factors and potential targets for therapy and markers for diagnosis. Melanoma is a relatively immunogenic tumor and antigens recognized by melanoma-specific T cells have been extensively studied. The specificities of antibody responses to this malignancy have been analyzed to some extent by molecular genetic but not proteomics approaches. We screened sera of 94 melanoma patients for anti-melanoma reactivity and detected seropositivity in two-thirds of the patients with 2–6 antigens per case detected by 1D and an average of 2.3 per case by 2D Western blot analysis. For identification, antigen spots in Western blots were aligned with proteins in 2-DE and analyzed by mass spectrometry. 18 antigens were identified, 17 of which for the first time for melanoma. One of these antigens, galectin-3, has been related to various oncogenic processes including metastasis formation and invasiveness. Similarly, enolase has been found deregulated in different cancers. With at least 2 of 18 identified proteins implicated in oncogenic processes, the work confirms the potential of proteome-based antigen discovery to identify pathologically relevant proteins

High-Contrast Imaging of Graphene via Time-Domain Terahertz Spectroscopy
We demonstrate terahertz (THz) imaging and spectroscopy of single-layer graphene deposited on an intrinsic Si substrate using THz time-domain spectroscopy. A single-cycle THz pulse undergoes multiple internal reflections within the Si substrate, and the THz absorption by the graphene layer accumulates through the multiple interactions with the graphene/Si interface. We exploit the large absorption of the multiply reflected THz pulses to acquire high-contrast THz images of graphene. We obtain local sheet conductivity of the graphene layer analyzing the transmission data with thin-film Fresnel formula based on the Drude model.Keywords: Graphene, Time-domain spectroscopy, Multiple internal reflections, Terahertz imagin
