Population types of cataclysmic variables in the solar neighborhood

The Galactic orbital parameters of 159 cataclysmic variables in the Solar neighbourhood are calculated, for the first time, to determine their population types using published kinematical parameters. Population analysis shows that about 6 per cent of cataclysmic variables in the sample are members of the thi ck disc component of the Galaxy. This value is consistent with the fraction obt ained from star count analysis. The rest of the systems in the sample are found to be in the thin disc component of the Galaxy. Our analysis revealed no halo CVs in the Solar vicinity. About 60 per cent of the thick disc CVs have orbital periods be low the orbital period gap. This result is roughly consistent with the predictions of population synthesis models developed for cataclysmic variables. A kinematical age of 13 Gyr is obtained using total space velocity dispersion of the most probable thick disc CVs which is consistent with the age of thick disc component of the Galaxy

An evaluation on the Web page navigation tools in university library Web sites In Turkey

Web technologies and web pages are primary tools for dissemination of information all over the world today. Libraries are also using and adopting these technologies to reach their audiences. The effective usage of these technologies can be possible with user centered design. Web pages that have user centered design help users to find information without being lost in the web page. As a part of the web pages, navigation systems have a vital role in this context. Effective usage of navigation systems protect users from being lost in the web page. This study gives information about Turkish higher education institutions’ library web pages and their navigation systems. This study also contains evaluations of these web pages from web usability framework. This study provides an insight about design of library web pages in terms of usability factors and navigation systems. Today many libraries are used web technologies effectively. There are many libraries that are using web pages and web 2.0 technologies for their audiences. European Conference on Information Literacy (ECIL) 2016

Avrupa Bilgi Okuryazarlığı Konferansı Hacettepe Üniversitesi Bilgi ve Belge Yönetimi Bölümü ile Zagreb Üniversitesi Bilgi ve İletişim Bilimleri Bölümü tarafından 2013 yılında başlatılmıştır. Her yıl bir Avrupa ülkesinin partnerliğiyle düzenlenen Konferans 10-13 Ekim 2016 tarihlerinde Çek Cumhuriyetinin başkenti Prag’da Çek Üniversiteleri Derneği ev sahipliğinde gerçekleştirildi. Bu yazıda konferansa yönelik izlenimler paylaşılmakta ve konferansta tartışılan konuların bir bölümü kısaca özetlenmektedir.European Conference on Information Literacy was initiated by Hacettepe University Department of Information Management and Department of Information and Communication Sciences of Zagreb University in 2013. A Historical Review of Illegal Tour Guiding in Turkey

The tour guiding profession was much abused in the past while illegal guiding took place, and remains much the same nowadays. With the use of official documents, this paper outlines issues concerning illegal tour guid ing from the past to the present. Document analysis as a qualitative research method was applied in this study. Archival research was carried out, and unpublished documents were analysed to contribute to the literature and shed light on the roots of illegal tour guiding. Archival data was combined with travel guidebooks, official reports, and court files. Despite regulations, problems concerning tour guiding continue to exist to the present day. More than ever before, illegal tour guides employed by travel agencies have become a threat to the employment of licenced guides. The number of illegal tour guides proves that current measures remain incapable of prohibiting illegal guiding activities. Touting seems to be the longstanding main motivation for illegal guides. Unethical guiding practices affect the established image of the destination country. From a historical perspective and underlining issues such as touting through unpublished archived documents and official reports, this paper contributes a detailed understanding of the defective points concerning the travel industry

User Interaction and Content Categorization in Social Media: Analysis of Facebook Posts of Public Libraries in Ankara

Etkileşim, paylaşım ve katılım gibi unsurlara dayanan sosyal medya platformlarında kütüphanelerin var olmaları hizmet sunumu ve pazarlamasının yanı sıra kullanıcı beklentilerinin belirlenmesine de katkı sağlayabilmektedir. Bu noktada kütüphanelerin sosyal medya platformlarında ürettikleri içerikler ve bu içeriklere yönelik olarak kullanıcılardan elde edilen etkileşim verileri etki değerlendirme amacıyla kullanılabilmektedir. Bu çalışmada Ankara’daki halk kütüphanelerinin yoğun olarak kullanılan sosyal medya platformlarından biri olan Facebook’taki kullanıcı etkileşiminin ve paylaştıkları gönderilerin konu dağılımının betimlenmesi amaçlanmaktadır. Çalışma kapsamında Ankara’daki 10 halk kütüphanesinin Facebook sayfalarındaki gönderiler toplanarak 1739 gönderi ve bu gönderilere ilişkin etkileşim verilerinden oluşan bir veri seti oluşturulmuştur. Veri seti üzerinde öncelikle betimsel analizler yapılmıştır. Sonrasında ise veri setindeki gönderilerin içerikleri metin madenciliği uygulamaları ile analiz edilmiştir. Bu analizler sonucunda gönderilere yönelik genel konu ve alt konu kategorileri belirlenmiştir. Elde edilen sonuçlar gönderilerde belirli kütüphanelerin Facebook sayfalarını aktif olarak kullandığını göstermiştir. Sonuçlar ayrıca etkinlik kategorisindeki gönderi içeriklerinin çoğunlukla çocuklar ile ilk ve ortaöğretim düzeyindeki kullanıcılara yönelik olduğunu ortaya koyarken, koleksiyona yönelik gönderi sayısının diğer kategorilere oranla daha az olduğunu yansıtmıştır. Sunulan sonuçlardan hareketle analiz edilen kütüphanelerin gönderilerinin etkileşim sayılarını artırmaları ve bu gönderileri hedef kitlelerine göre çeşitlendirmeleri gerektiği önerilmiştir. Buna ek olarak, kütüphanelerin koleksiyonlarına yönelik gönderi paylaşımlarını artırmalarına ihtiyaç duyulduğu da çalışmada vurgulanmıştır. Çalışmada son olarak kütüphanelerin sosyal medyadaki kullanıcı etkileşimini artırmak ve bu etkileşimin sürdürülebilirliği için bir sosyal medya stratejisi bağlamında hareket etmeleri gerektiği belirtilmiştir.The presence of libraries in social media platforms that mostly based on interaction, sharing, and engagement can contribute to the identification of user expectations as well as service delivery and marketing. In this regard, the content produced by libraries on social media platforms and the reaction data obtained from users can be utilized for impact assessment purposes. In this study, it is aimed to describe user interaction and to detect the content categories by analyzing the Facebook public page contents of public libraries in Ankara. Accordingly, 1739 posts and the interaction data related to these posts were collected on the Facebook pages of 10 public libraries in Ankara. The collected data were firstly presented with descriptive statistics, and then the posts were analysed by using text mining applications. Additionally, topics and sub-topics are detected. The results showed that specific libraries actively use their Facebook pages. It was also revealed in the study that the post contents in the event category were mostly for children and students at primary and secondary levels. The number of posts included in the collection category was lower than the number of posts in other categories. It is recommended in the study that the analyzed public libraries should develop more content according to their target audiences. It is also emphasized that the analyzed libraries should increase the number of post interactions, and they should increase the number of posts related to collections and services. Lastly, It was emphasized that the analyzed libraries should act in the context of a social media strategy to increase user interaction and provide its sustainability

Web Sayfası Kullanılabilirliğinin Ölçülmesi: Hacettepe Üniversitesi Bilgi ve Belge Yönetimi Bölümü Web Sayfası Örneği

Today, information is produced increasingly in electronic form and retrieval of information is provided via web pages. As a result of the rise of the number of web pages, many of them seem to comprise similar contents but different designs. In this respect, presenting information over the web pages according to user expectations and specifications is important in terms of effective usage of information. This study provides an insight about web usability studies that are executed for measuring effectiveness of web pages in design and usage sections. It also puts emphasis on the usability study of Hacettepe University, Department of Information Management web page. Seven volunteered users are determined from different levels. Qualitative and quantitative methods were used together for usability study. This usability study consists of three stages. In the first stage, “pre-test” was implemented for determining users ’ general computer and Internet skills. In the second stage, “classical usability study” was implemented. Fourteen questions that require the usage of the web page were prepared and directed to users. Clicking number and retrieval time was recorded and think-aloud protocol was also implemented during the study. In the third stage, a final test was implemented to users in order to find out the ideas of users about Hacettepe University, Department of Information Management web page. As a result of the usability study, positive and negative features of the web page were determined by the analyses of qualitative and quantitative data. Finally the results that were elaborated from the analyses have been used for revision that will provide an effective usage of the web page.Günümüzde bilgi giderek daha çok elektronik ortamda üretilmekte ve erişimi de web sayfaları aracılığıyla sağlanmaktadır. Internet’te yer alan web sayfası sayısının artması sonucunda benzer içeriğe sahip ancak farklı tasarımlarla hazırlanan web siteleri ortaya çıkmıştır. Web sitelerinde yer alan bilginin kullanıcı beklenti ve özelliklerine göre tasarlanarak sunulması bu bilginin etkin kullanımı açısından önemlidir. Bu çalışmada, web sayfalarının tasarımında ve kullanımında etkinliğini ölçmek için gerçekleştirilen kullanılabilirlik çalışmaları hakkında bilgi verilmektedir. Ayrıca Hacettepe Üniversitesi Bilgi ve Belge Yönetimi Bölümü web sayfasının kullanılabilirliğini ölçmek üzere yapılan bir araştırma ve sonuçları aktarılmaktadır. Bölüm web sayfası kullanıcısı olan farklı düzeyde yedi gönüllü denek üzerine gerçekleştirilen araştırmada nitel ve nicel yöntemler birlikte kullanılmıştır. Deneklere uygulama öncesi genel durumlarının belirlenmesi için bir ön test uygulanmıştır. Klasik kullanılabilirlik testinin uygulaması aşamasında deneklere bölüm web sayfasının çeşitli bölümlerinin kullanımını gerektiren on dört soru yöneltilmiştir. Soruların yanıtlanması sırasında sesli düşünme tekniği ile elde edilen veriler, tıklama sayıları ve yanıtlama süreleri kaydedilmiştir. Kullanılabilirlik çalışmasının son aşamasında kullanıcılara son test uygulanarak bölüm web sayfası ile ilgili görüşleri alınmıştır. Çalışmanın sonucunda elde edilen nicel ve nitel veriler analiz edilerek web sayfasının kullanımını olumlu ya da olumsuz etkileyen unsurlar belirlenmiştir. Elde edilen sonuçlar mevcut web sayfasının etkin kullanımını sağlayacak düzenlemeler için kullanılmıştır
