Spin Degree of Freedom in a Two-Dimensional Electron Liquid
We have investigated correlation between spin polarization and
magnetotransport in a high mobility silicon inversion layer which shows the
metal-insulator transition. Increase in the resistivity in a parallel magnetic
field reaches saturation at the critical field for the full polarization
evaluated from an analysis of low-field Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations. By
rotating the sample at various total strength of the magnetic field, we found
that the normal component of the magnetic field at minima in the diagonal

Clinical features of 125 patients with sarcoidosis: Okayama University Hospital review of a recent 10-year period.
Clinical features were studied in 125 patients with sarcoidosis (72 females and 53 males) diagnosed at Okayama University Hospital during a recent 10-year period. The age distribution had two peaks in patients in their 20s and the 50s. Over half of the patients were detected at health screening check and were asymptomatic, while the remaining were symptomatic. Twelve patients were in stage 0, 41 were in stage I, 54 were in stage II, 16 were in stage III, and 2 were in stage IV according to the chest x-ray findings. Serum angiotensin converting enzyme levels and serum lysozyme levels were elevated in 60% and 76% of the patients, respectively. The bronchoalveolar lavage fluid showed lymphocytosis, especially of helper T-cells. The clinical features of sarcoidosis appear to depend on the duration of the disease.</p
Bone Response to Titanium Implants Coated with Double- or Single-Stranded DNA
We aimed to evaluate in vivo bone response and in vitro apatite formation to titanium (Ti) implants, coated with double-stranded DNA (DNA-d) or single-stranded DNA (DNA-s), and to compare the influence in different structure of DNA, double strand and single strand on bone response and apatite formation. The bone responses to multilayered DNA-d/protamine or DNA-s/protamine coating implants were evaluated after implantation into the extracted sockets of rat maxillary molars. Apatite formation on either coating surface after immersion in simulated body fluid (SBF) was evaluated using the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) method. DNA-d/protamine and DNA-s/protamine coatings produced more roughened and hydrophilic surfaces than untreated Ti. Animal experiments showed that higher bone-to-implant ratios were achieved 3 and 6 weeks after implantation using DNA-d/protamine and DNA-s/protamine coatings compared with Ti. QCM measurements revealed that each coating contributed to significant earlier apatite formation in SBF. We conclude that both DNA-d/protamine and DNA-s/protamine coatings enhanced early bone formation. We suggest that a DNA-multilayer coating is useful for the surface modification of a Ti implant

Acquisition of monosomy 7 and a RUNX1 mutation in Pearson syndrome
Pearson syndrome (PS) is a very rare and often fatal multisystem disease caused by deletions in mitochondrial DNA that result in sideroblastic anemia, vacuolization of marrow precursors, and pancreatic dysfunction. Spontaneous recovery from anemia is often observed within several years of diagnosis. We present the case of a 4-month-old male diagnosed with PS who experienced prolonged severe pancytopenia preceding the emergence of monosomy 7. Whole-exome sequencing identified two somatic mutations, including RUNX1 p.S100F that was previously reported as associated with myeloid malignancies. The molecular defects associated with PS may have the potential to progress to advanced myelodysplastic syndrome
