Chiral zero modes of the SU(n) Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten model

We define the chiral zero modes' phase space of the G=SU(n) Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten model as an (n-1)(n+2)-dimensional manifold M_q equipped with a symplectic form involving a special 2-form - the Wess-Zumino (WZ) term - which depends on the monodromy M. This classical system exhibits a Poisson-Lie symmetry that evolves upon quantization into an U_q(sl_n) symmetry for q a primitive even root of 1. For each constant solution of the classical Yang-Baxter equation we write down explicitly a corresponding WZ term and invert the symplectic form thus computing the Poisson bivector of the system. The resulting Poisson brackets appear as the classical counterpart of the exchange relations of the quantum matrix algebra studied previously. We argue that it is advantageous to equate the determinant D of the zero modes' matrix to a pseudoinvariant under permutations q-polynomial in the SU(n) weights, rather than to adopt the familiar convention D=1.Comment: 30 pages, LaTeX, uses amsfonts; v.2 - small corrections, Appendix and a reference added; v.3 - amended version for J. About the magnetic fluctuation effect on the phase transition to superconducting state in Al

The free energy and the order parameter profile near the phase transition to the superconducting state in bulk Al samples are calculated within a mean-field-like approximation. The results are compared with those for thin films.Comment: 11 pages, miktex, 2 figure

Power dissipation in nanoscale conductors: classical, semi-classical and quantum dynamics

Modelling Joule heating is a difficult problem because of the need to introduce correct correlations between the motions of the ions and the electrons. In this paper we analyse three different models of current induced heating (a purely classical model, a fully quantum model and a hybrid model in which the electrons are treated quantum mechanically and the atoms are treated classically). We find that all three models allow for both heating and cooling processes in the presence of a current, and furthermore the purely classical and purely quantum models show remarkable agreement in the limit of high biases. However, the hybrid model in the Ehrenfest approximation tends to suppress heating. Analysis of the equations of motion reveals that this is a consequence of two things: the electrons are being treated as a continuous fluid and the atoms cannot undergo quantum fluctuations. A means for correcting this is suggested

Effective one-body approach to the relativistic two-body problem

The relativistic 2-body problem, much like the non-relativistic one, is reduced to describing the motion of an effective particle in an external field. The concept of a relativistic reduced mass and effective particle energy introduced some 30 years ago to compute relativistic corrections to the Balmer formula in quantum electrodynamics, is shown to work equally well for classical electromagnetic and gravitational interaction. The results for the gravitational 2-body problem have more than academic interest since they apply to the study of binary pulsars that provide precision tests for general relativity. They are compared with recent results derived by other methods.Comment: 9 pages, latex, no figures. Minor amendments, comments, new references and acknowledgments adde

In urgеnt abdominal surgery the acute inflammation of thе pancreas always creates difficulties in the differential diagnosis of the disorder. Treatment аnd prophylaxis which to а lаrgе extent dереnd оn correct аnd рrоmрt diagnosis recently also represent problems of interest. Тhе superior results from the conservative treatment impose to the surgeon higher precision in making the diagnosis of this ailment.During the past two years (1962-1963) in the Suгgical Clinic we had а number of cases of acute pancreatitis. For this period two of  the 15 patients with this diagnosis were admitted with the diagnosis of choelithiatic attack, two - with acute cholecystitis, two - with nephrolitiasis and ninе - with acute pancreatitis. In аll patients the diagnosis is elucidated within the first 24 houгs, and in 6 - even in the out-patient service. Diagnostic errors, in the sense of hyperdiagnosis, аге admitted in two patients (one sufferiпg from acute gastritis and the other with hernia inguinalis incarcerata).
