    Chromaticity decay due to superconducting dipoles on the injection plateau of the Large Hadron Collider

    It is well known that in a superconducting accelerator a significant chromaticity drift can be induced by the decay of the sextupolar component of the main dipoles. In this paper we give a brief overview of what was expected for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) on the grounds of magnetic measurements of individual dipoles carried out during the production. According to this analysis, the decay time constants were of the order of 200 s: since the injection in the LHC starts at least 30 minutes after the magnets are at constant current, the dynamic correction of this effect was not considered to be necessary. The first beam measurements of chromaticity showed significant decay even after a few hours. For this reason, a dynamic correction of decay on the injection plateau was implemented based on beam measurements. This means that during the injection plateau the sextupole correctors are powered with a varying current to cancel out the decay of the dipoles. This strategy has been implemented successfully. A similar phenomenon has been observed for the dependence of the decay amplitude on the powering history of the dipoles: according to magnetic measurements, also in this case time constants are of the order of 200 s and therefore no difference is expected between a one hour or a ten hours flattop. On the other hand, the beam measurements show a significant change of decay for these two conditions. For the moment there is no clue of the origin of these discrepancies. We give a complete overview of the two effects, and the modifications that have been done to the field model parameters to be able to obtain a final chromaticity correction within a few units.peer-reviewe

    A Method to Measure Thermal Deformation of Superconducting Magnet Cross Sections

    The precision measurement of the cable positioning in superconducting coils is of great interest both at room and liquid nitrogen temperatures because mechanical and thermal deformations affect the quality of the magnetic field. The paper describes a new two-coordinate measuring device, which is able to obtain scanned images of flat composite samples at liquid nitrogen temperature. The sample is cooled at 77 K into a flat quartz tray to permit the optical access to the sample from the bottom. The comparison of the images taken at room and liquid nitrogen temperatures by a high-resolution flatbed scanner gives the thermal contraction of the components

    APE Results of Hadron Masses in Full QCD Simulations

    We present numerical results obtained in full QCD with 2 flavors of Wilson fermions. We discuss the relation between the phase of Polyakov loops and the {\bf sea} quarks boundary conditions.     Decay Constants of Heavy-Light Mesons

    The decay constants of the heavy-light pseudoscalar mesons are studied in a high statistics run using the Wilson action at β=6.0\beta=6.0 and β=6.2\beta=6.2, and the clover action at β=6.0\beta=6.0. The systematics of O(a)O(a) discretisation errors are discussed. Our best estimates of the decay constants are: fDf_D = 218(9) MeV, fD/fDsf_D/f_{Ds} = 1.11(1) and we obtain preliminary values for fBf_B.Comment: at the Dallas Lattice Conference, October 1993. 3 pages in a single postscript file, uuencoded form.     Quenched BKB_K-parameter with the Wilson and Clover actions at β=6.0\beta = 6.0

    We present results for the Kaon BB parameter from a sample of 200200 configurations using the Wilson action and 460460 configurations using the Clover action, on a 183×6418^3 \times 64 lattice at β=6.0\beta=6.0. A slight improvement of the chiral behaviour of BKB_K is observed due to the Clover action. We have also compared the results for BKB_K obtained from two different procedures for the boosting of the coupling constant gg. We observe a strong dependence of BKB_K on the prescription adopted for gg in the Wilson case, contrary to the results of the Clover case which are almost unaffected by the choice of gg. Combining some recently obtained non perturbative estimates for the renormalisation constants with our Clover matrix element, we observe a significant improvement in the chiral behaviour of BKB_K.Comment: 3 pages, Latex, Postscript file with figures available at ftp://hpteo.roma1.infn.it/pub/preprints/lat94/donini ; to appear in Lattice '94, Nucl.     Models and experimental results from the wide aperture Nb-Ti magnets for the LHC upgrade

    MQXC is a Nb-Ti quadrupole designed to meet the accelerator quality requirements needed for the phase-1 LHC upgrade, now superseded by the high luminosity upgrade foreseen in 2021. The 2-m-long model magnet was tested at room temperature and 1.9 K. The technology developed for this magnet is relevant for other magnets currently under development for the high-luminosity upgrade, namely D1 (at KEK) and the large aperture twin quadrupole Q4 (at CEA). In this paper we present MQXC test results, some of the specialized heat extraction features, spot heaters, temperature sensor mounting and voltage tap development for the special open cable insulation. We look at some problem solving with noisy signals, give an overview of electrical testing, look at how we calculate the coil resistance during at quench and show that the heaters are not working We describe the quench signals and its timing, the development of the quench heaters and give an explanation of an Excel quench calculation and its comparison including the good agreement with the MQXC test results. We propose an improvement to the magnet circuit design to reduce voltage to ground values by factor 2.     The FiDel model at 7 TeV

    After the long shut down of 2013-2014, the LHC energy will be pushed toward 7 TeV. In this range of energy, the main magnets will enter a new regime. For this reason, this paper will present a detailed study of the performance of the FiDeL model that could be critical for the operation in 2015. In particular this paper will study the saturation component and its precision in the model, the errors due to the hysteresis, and an estimate of the dynamic effects for the 7 TeV operation.peer-reviewe

    Adrenocorticotropic hormone, but not trilostane, causes severe adrenal hemorrhage, vacuolization, and apoptosis in rats

    Adrenal necrosis has been reported as a complication of trilostane application in dogs with hyperadrenocorticism. One suspicion was that necrosis results from the increase of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) during trilostane therapy. The aim of the current study was to assess the effects of ACTH and trilostane on adrenal glands of rats. For experiment 1, 36 rats were divided into 6 groups. Groups 1.1 to 1.4 received ACTH in different doses (60, 40, 20, and 10 ÎĽg/d) infused subcutaneously with osmotic minipumps for 16 wk. Group 1.5 received saline, and group 1.6 received no therapy. For experiment 2, 24 rats were divided into 3 groups. Group 2.1 and 2.2 received 5 and 50 mg/kg trilostane/d orally mixed into chocolate pudding for 16 wk. Eight control rats received pudding alone. At the end of the experiments, adrenal glands were assessed for necrosis by histology and immunohistochemistry; levels of endogenous ACTH and nucleosomes were assessed in the blood. Rats treated with 60 ÎĽg ACTH/d showed more hemorrhage and vacuolization and increased numbers of apoptotic cells in the adrenal glands than rats treated with 20 or 10 ÎĽg ACTH/d, trilostane, or control rats. Rats treated with 60 ÎĽg ACTH/d had a higher amount of nucleosomes in the blood compared with rats treated with 10 ÎĽg ACTH/d, trilostane, or saline. We conclude that in healthy rats ACTH, but not trilostane, causes adrenal degeneration in a dose-dependent manner. Results of this study support the hypothesis that adrenal gland lesions seen in trilostane-treated dogs are caused by ACTH and not by trilostane
