    Probing diffusion barrier integrity on porous silica low-k thin films using positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy

    The technique of positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) has been used to investigate the continuity and thermal stability of thin barrier layers designed to prevent Cu atom diffusion into porous silica, low-dielectric constant (k) films. Nanoglass™ K2.2-A10C (A10C), a porous organosilicate film, is determined to have interconnected pores with an average tubular-pore diameter of (6.9 ± 0.4) nm. Cu deposited directly on the A10C films is observed to diffuse into the porous structure. The minimum necessary barrier thickness for stable continuity of Ta and TaN layers deposited on A10C is determined by detecting the signal of positronium (Ps) escaping into vacuum. It is found that the 25 nm thick layers do not form continuous barriers. This is confirmed by the presence of holes observed in such films using a transmission electron microscope. Although 35 nm and 45 nm Ta and TaN layers perform effectively at room temperature as Ps barriers, only the Ta-capped samples are able to withstand heat treatments up to 500 °C500 °C without breakdown or penetration into the porous film. TaN interdiffusion into the silica pores is indicated by the reduction of the Ps lifetime after high annealing temperatures. The validity of using Ps diffusion to test barrier layers designed to inhibit Cu diffusion is discussed. The procedures to standardize the testing of barrier layer integrity and thermal stability using PALS are proposed.     Experimentally Realizable C-NOT Gate in a Flux Qubit/Resonator System

    In this paper we present an experimentally realizable microwave pulse sequence that effects a Controlled NOT (C-NOT) gate operation on a Josephson junction-based flux-qubit/resonator system with high fidelity in the end state. We obtained a C-NOT gate process fidelity of 0.988 (0.980) for a two (three) qubit/resonator system under ideal conditions, and a fidelity of 0.903 for a two qubit/resonator system under the best, currently achieved, experimental conditions. In both cases, we found that "qubit leakage" to higher levels of the resonator causes a majority of the loss of fidelity, and that such leakage becomes more pronounced as decoherence effects increase.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys.     Herd-level animal management factors associated with the occurrence of bovine neonatal pancytopenia in calves in a multicountry study

    Since 2007, mortality associated with a previously unreported haemorrhagic disease has been observed in young calves in several European countries. The syndrome, which has been named ‘bovine neonatal pancytopenia’ (BNP), is characterised by thrombocytopenia, leukocytopenia and a panmyelophthisis. A herd-level case-control study was conducted in four BNP affected countries (Belgium, France, Germany and the Netherlands) to identify herd management risk factors for BNP occurrence. Data were collected using structured face-to-face and telephone interviews of farm managers and their local veterinarians. In total, 363 case farms and 887 control farms were included in a matched multivariable conditional logistic regression analysis. Case-control status was strongly associated with the odds of herd level use of the vaccine PregSure® BVD (PregSure, Pfizer Animal Health) (matched adjusted odds ratio (OR) 107.2; 95% CI: 41.0–280.1). This was also the case for the practices of feeding calves colostrum from the calf’s own dam (OR 2.0; 95% CI: 1.1–3.4) or feeding pooled colostrum (OR 4.1; 95% CI: 1.9–8.8). Given that the study had relatively high statistical power and represented a variety of cattle production and husbandry systems, it can be concluded with some confidence that no other herd level management factors are competent causes for a sufficient cause of BNP occurrence on herd level. It is suggested that genetic characteristics of the dams and BNP calves should be the focus of further investigations aimed at identifying the currently missing component causes that together with PregSure vaccination and colostrum feeding represent a sufficient cause for occurrence of BNP in calves

    Presurgical language fMRI: Clinical practices and patient outcomes in epilepsy surgical planning

    The goal of this study was to document current clinical practice and report patient outcomes in presurgical language functional MRI (fMRI) for epilepsy surgery. Epilepsy surgical programs worldwide were surveyed as to the utility, implementation, and efficacy of language fMRI in the clinic; 82 programs responded. Respondents were predominantly US (61%) academic programs (85%), and evaluated adults (44%), adults and children (40%), or children only (16%). Nearly all (96%) reported using language fMRI. Surprisingly, fMRI is used to guide surgical margins (44% of programs) as well as lateralize language (100%). Sites using fMRI for localization most often use a distance margin around activation of 10mm. While considered useful, 56% of programs reported at least one instance of disagreement with other measures. Direct brain stimulation typically confirmed fMRI findings (74%) when guiding margins, but instances of unpredicted decline were reported by 17% of programs and 54% reported unexpected preservation of function. Programs reporting unexpected decline did not clearly differ from those which did not. Clinicians using fMRI to guide surgical margins do not typically map known language-critical areas beyond Broca's and Wernicke's. This initial data shows many clinical teams are confident using fMRI not only for language lateralization but also to guide surgical margins. Reported cases of unexpected language preservation when fMRI activation is resected, and cases of language decline when it is not, emphasize a critical need for further validation. Comprehensive studies comparing commonly-used fMRI paradigms to predict stimulation mapping and post-surgical language decline remain of high importance
