Value addition to crop residues: An indigenous resource conserving and soil fertility enhancing technology of India

Not AvailableAbstract A two-year field experiment was conducted during the rainy seasons of 2004 and 2005 in the farmers' fields of Mahbubnagar district in Andhra Pradesh, India, to test the practice of cattle shed bedding with groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) shells by preparing Groundnut Shell Manure (GSM) and its application along with Farmers' practice (FP) and in comparison with five treatments namely, FP only, FP and GSM, FP and compost, regenerative (only organics) and Recommended Dose of Fertilizers (RDF), FP and RDF being the checks on rainy season rainfed groundnut and castor (Ricinus communis L.) crops. The results indicated that crops receiving GSM and compost performed well during the deficit rainfall year (2004) as well as during the normal rainfall year (2005) and recorded 12–16% higher yields of groundnut and 9–14% higher yields in castor over the FP. During 2004 which was a deficit rainfall year, GSM and compost application enhanced soil moisture by 14–40%, percentage of filled pods by 59–65% and 100 seed weight by 18% in groundnut while in castor 6–33% improved soil moisture enhanced capsules per plant from 45 to 57% without any significant effect on 100 seed weight. These treatments were followed by groundnut shell applied crop, RDF and regenerative (organics only) treatments. However, during 2005 the order in which higher yields achieved by treatments were GSM application, compost followed by RDF due to well-distributed rainfall. Therefore to sustain yields in rainfed groundnut and castor crops, present experimentation emphasized application of organics to improve soil fertility and drought management ability by recycling crop residues through a simple process of cattle shed bedding. This was an attempt to introduce the practice of cattle shed bedding as value addition to process other locally available crop residues to the practitioners of farming (especially parts of Africa and Latin America). Not Availabl

Family Unification, Exotic States and Light Magnetic Monopoles

Models with fermions in bifundamental representations can lead naturally to family unification as opposed to family replication. Such models typically predict (exotic) color singlet states with fractional electric charge, and magnetic monopoles with multiple Dirac charge. The exotics may be at the TeV scale, and relatively light magnetic monopoles (greater than about 10^7 GeV) can be present in the galaxy with abundance near the Parker bound. We focus on three family SU(4)XSU(3)XSU(3) models.Comment: 37 page

Health professionals and the contingent body: social determinants in the curriculum.

Health professionals and the contingent body: social determinants in the curriculum Background Health professional education situates health workers within an objectivist biomedical model. Yet workers are also expected to provide patient centred care to a significant proportion of people who have worse health outcomes associated with the social determinants of health. This study asks how health professionals are educated and what are some of the consequences? Summary of work The qualitative study interviewed 17 health professionals in order to explore how they were educated and some of the consequences of that through a lens of critical pedagogy, reflexivity, poststructural feminist critiques of education and Foucault’s theories of power/knowledge. Ethics approval was gained through Murdoch University. Results Participants expressed a slippage of the objectivist self with both themselves and patients. Their language of choice, control, individuality and the struggle to link abstract theorizing of biomedicine especially in relation to the social determinants of health and their own lived experience was apparent. Strategies to implement and understand social determinants of health only seemed to reinforce the ontological divide and the need for translation. Discussions and Conclusion The split between subjectivity and objectivity amplifies the ‘Othering’ that occurs in the biomedical curriculum and practice. This leaves health professionals unprepared to work with poverty and deprivation, and apparently less able to self-regulate effectively. In spite of evidence to the contrary, and experiencing suffering themselves, health professionals were unable to re-imagine how this could be different. Take home message Health professionals’ selves and bodies are tied up with their patients in a messy temporal space that seems to co-produce the contingent body. Narratives of trauma seem to be a way of managing the ontological gap between health as a definitive state and healing as a durative process located in time and space

Bounds on R-Parity Violating Parameters from Fermion EDM's

    Get PDF
We study one-loop contributions to the fermion electric dipole moments in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with explicit R-parity violating interactions. We obtain new individual bounds on R-parity violating Yukawa couplings and put more stringent limits on certain parameters than those obtained previously.Comment: 16 pages, LaTe

Case report: Resolution of oligo-anuric acute kidney injury with furosemide administration in a cat following lily toxicity

ObjectiveTo describe the successful outcome of a case of oligo-anuric acute kidney injury in a cat secondary to lily ingestion.Case summaryA 12-week-old intact male domestic short-hair cat weighing 1.64 kg (3.6 lb) presented with a 12-h duration of vomiting and lethargy after exposure to lilies of the genera Lilium species 24 h prior to presentation. Severe azotemia (Creatinine 5.8 mg/dL, BUN > 100 mg/dL) and hyperkalemia (9.36 mmol/L) were noted on the day of presentation. Treatment of hyperkalemia was instituted with calcium gluconate, lactated ringers solution, dextrose, regular short-acting insulin, albuterol, and sodium bicarbonate, Oliguria to anuria was highly suspected based on a lack of urine production 21 h after hospitalization with intravenous fluid administration and a static bladder size. The cat was administered 4 mg/kg of furosemide, and urinated at 6 h following administration and continued to produce over 6 ml/kg/h of urine in the next 24 h. Two days following furosemide administration, the cat's hyperkalemia and azotemia resolved. The cat was discharged after 4 days of hospitalization, and a recheck revealed no persistent azotemia or hyperkalemia.Unique informationAnuric acute kidney injury secondary to lily toxicity is associated with a poor prognosis, and the only treatment modality previously described is hemodialysis. The cat in this report was successfully managed with medical intervention and furosemide administration, with complete resolution of the acute kidney injury

Quark mixing from softly broken symmetries

Quark flavor mixing may originate in the soft breaking of horizontal symmetries. Those symmetries, which in the simplest case are three family U(1) groups, are obeyed only by the dimension-4 Yukawa couplings and lead, when unbroken, to the absence of mixing. Their breaking may arise from the dimension-3 mass terms of SU(2)-singlet vector-like quarks. Those gauge-singlet mass terms break the horizontal symmetries at a scale much higher than the Fermi scale, yet softly, leading to quark mixing while the quark masses remain unsuppressed.Comment: 9 pages, plain Latex, no figure
