Background: The New Zealand population is ageing as a result of declining mortality and birth rates. In order for older adults to remain in optimal health, good nutrition is vital. Previous research indicates approximately 50% of New Zealand’s community living older adult population are at some degree of nutrition risk. Understanding nutrition risk prevalence and factors associated with increased nutrition risk is vital to reduce healthcare spending. This study aims to determine nutrition risk prevalence and associated health and social risk factors amongst community-living older adults across New Zealand. Methods: A total of 3050 community-living older adults were invited to respond to the 2014 Health, Work and Retirement (HWR) postal survey. This included a nutrition risk assessment using the Seniors in the Community: Risk Evaluation for Eating and Nutrition, abbreviated version (SCREENII-AB) as well as demographic, social and health characteristic measures. Social provisions were determined with the 24-item Social Provisions Scale, and Social and Emotional loneliness were assessed with the 6-item De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale. Alcohol intake was determined by using the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT-C), and living standards assessed with the Economic Living Standards Index Short Form (ELSI-SF). Overall, 136 participants did not complete one or more of the SCREENII-AB items, reducing the sample size to 2914. Results: Of the 2914 participants, 37.2% were found to be at nutrition risk. Half (51.2%) of Māori participants were at nutritional risk compared to a 32.7% of non-Māori. Independent risk factors for Māori were being un-partnered (OR 1.87) and rating general health as fair (OR 4.83). Independent risk factors for non-Māori were being un-partnered (OR 1.94), rating general health as good, fair or poor (OR 2.03, 3.18, 4.39), life satisfaction (OR 0.40), as well as increased total health conditions counts (OR 1.11), and emotional loneliness (OR 1.35). Conclusions: These findings suggest that social eating is required to reduce nutrition risk amongst older adults. Those who are un-partnered may benefit from public health intervention promoting social eating. As Māori had a higher prevalence of nutrition risk than non-Māori, culturally appropriate strategies are needed to encourage healthy eating practices

Social support is a dyadic exchange process that yields many psychological and physiological health benefits. The goal of this study was to examine the effects of the support exchange process from a dyadic perspective on health outcomes and to investigate the extent that gender and relationship characteristics influence the support process and health outcomes. It was hypothesized that female patients would report seeking more support and male patients would report receiving more support. In addition, it was expected that patient seeking support would be associated with both partner provision and patient receipt of support. It was also hypothesized that patients\u27 receipt of support would be predictive of better health outcomes. Among a sample of 195 cardiac rehabilitation patients and their self-selected support partners, the current study examined three dimensions of health-related social support: patient seeking, partner providing, and patient receiving. In addition, patients\u27 gender, characteristics of their relationship to the support provider, and living with support partners were included as cross-sectional predictors of support and health outcomes. The support variables, gender, and relationship characteristics were examined on the health outcomes of psychological well-being, physical well-being, depressive symptoms, blood pressure, relationship satisfaction, and coping efficacy. A combination of mean differences, correlations, and path analyses were used to examine the hypotheses. Male patients were more likely than female patients to seek social support, receive social support, and live with their support partners. Living with one\u27s support partner was associated with partners\u27 providing more support and patients\u27 receiving more support. Patients with a spousal support partner reported receiving more support than patients with adult children support partners. More support receipt was related to better psychological well-being, greater relationship satisfaction, and better coping efficacy. Gender of patients and living with a support partner were important predictors of the support exchange process and the health outcomes. In addition, seeking support emerged as an important predictor of receiving support. The current study provides psychosocial pathways that may help reduce the health disparities that exist among African American patients with cardiovascular disease. Future research should examine these constructs from a longitudinal perspective and include multiple social support measures. Clinical implications include assessing social support resources to improve well-being during cardiac rehabilitation

Can art promote rights? : a case for aesthetic activism in the EU

In this study, I elaborate a notion of aesthetic activism based on Jacques Rancière’s conception of “politics as aesthetics.” I contrast aesthetic activism with the more traditional forms of political activism and of social movements. Rather than addressing the current legal and regulatory situation of a specific set of civil or human rights, this study is intended as a general intervention into the realm of political activism itself. Hence, the range of discussed examples of aesthetic activism covers several rights which are especially important in the European context: the right of asylum, the right of protection of whistleblowers in the European Union, reproductive rights etc. I argue that aesthetic activism might be more effective in current political and medial environment and, also, that it is exceptionally suited to address European issues, target European Institutions and the budding pan-European public sphere

Abstract: This present report directed for the Course of Law of the Federal University of Paraná intends to analyze the juridical implications of a new tool used for cybernetic attacks, known as cryptojacking. This cybercrime does not have to this moment any kind of specific legal regulation in Brazil and tends to act discreetly, causing damages that are difficult to trace, which makes this study important regulate this type of cybercrime that is becoming increasingly more common. In order to make this research possible a broad study was done in different areas of knowledge, which includes, especially, studies from law, computer engineering and programming. For this purpose, the hypothetical-deductive method was used, with bibliographical research, to carry out research of a qualitative and exploratory nature so that a global perception on the subject is achieved and, afterwards, adequate to the legal environment. With the information acquired, it was possible to form, in first place, the comprehension of what are cryptocurrencies and what is to mine a cryptocurrency. With that understanding, it could be formed an understanding of what is, what are the motivations and what is the method of a cryptojacking attack, besides allow to identify how these attacks affect the victim. In the cryptojacking and the laws were done in a way to verify which are the juridical consequences for the act of an unwilling invasion of a device for mining cryptocurrency. Thus, it is concluded that cryptojacking can either be classified as a crime in Brazil, generating the duty to indemnify, or it can be a permitted practice, depending on how it was carried out and the respective regulation to be fulfilled by the State

This paper aims to provide information and inferences regarding international coverage of events in the territories of Palestine and Israel. The object of this analysis is the podcast Terras de Sangue, created by Grupo RBS and conducted by international politics columnist Rodrigo Lopes, with the purpose of presenting the on-site coverage of the special envoy to Israel and other aspects of the region. In the theoretical chapters, some of the authors used to explain the issues of international politics and history are Hobsbawm (2000), Soares (1989), Vaisse (1995) and Chomsky (2017), while the reflections on journalism are mainly led by Natali (2007), but also Schudson (2010), Genro Filho (1987) and Brasil (2012); In the chapter dedicated to the media format, Ferraretto (2007), Kischinhevsky (2010) and Lucht (2009) address the transformations of radio and the impacts of technology. The question that guides the research is to understand what the purpose of the podcast is, and what it offers to the listener. For this, Content Analysis (Bardin, 2011) was used. After an attentive listening to the six episodes and applying the categories: subjects, sources and purpose, the author infers that the objective achieved with the podcast Terras de Sangue was to offer the listener a narration of the journalist's journey, under a look devoid of impartiality, with his subjective analyses, and interviews, carried out in a second moment, to explain technical issues. The lack of continuity of the podcast is also strange to the public, with the proposal to explain a conflict that continues to happen and that has changed a lot since the debut of the product, in November 2023

THE IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON INFORMAL CAREGIVERS IN THE US

Background: Caregiver burden has negative effects on mental and physical health along with quality of life. Meanwhile, social and physical distancing protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic have created additional impacts on informal caregiving in a rapidly changing environment. Early research over the past year suggests that the pandemic has caused increased caregiver burden as well as caregiving intensity among these individuals. Purpose: Our primary purpose in this informational literature review is to describe the impacts of the pandemic on informal caregiver burden and the sudden shift in roles and responsibilities as a result of pandemic-related changes in caregiving. This review will describe emerging effects on various aspects of health among informal caregivers and explore the growing need to support unpaid caregiving during this time. Methods: A streamlined search was conducted to fit the scope of this review, with key terms determined to identify relevant publications. Common research databases and up-to-date mainstream resources were utilized. Notably, we focused on research published or released since March 2020, primarily rapidly reviewed studies, to align with the timing of the COVID-19 pandemic in the US. Results: Early research suggests that the pandemic has worsened caregiver burden and increased caregiving intensity and hours of care among unpaid, informal family caregivers. Reported health impacts include higher stress, pain, and depression, along with decreased social connectedness and quality of life. Notably, however, COVID-related research generally does not focus on the positive aspects of caregiving, such as its role as a source of purpose in life, creating an opportunity to explore ways to boost certain valuable personal resources among caregivers. Conclusions: Informal family caregivers face their own negative health outcomes and distress as a result of greater caregiver burden, intensity, and the changing landscape of caregiving during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Immediate policy and support recommendations should be considered to alleviate informal caregiver burden and provide ongoing resources over the longer term. In addition, future work should explore the potential of boosting positive resources such as resilience and purpose to ease caregiver burden

A signaling loop of REST, TSC2 and beta-catenin governs proliferation and function of PC12 neural cells

The RE-1-specific silencing transcription factor (REST or NRSF) is a transcription repressor that orchestrates differentiation and also operates in differentiated neurons and neurosecretory cells (neural cells). Its role in proliferation has been investigated so far only in rapidly growing tumors, with conflicting results: suppression in non-neural tumors, stimulation in medulloblastomas. Working with two clones of chromaffin-neuronal PC12 cells, which express different levels of REST, and using genetic complementation and knockdown approaches, we show that REST also promotes proliferation in differentiated neural cells. Mechanistically, this occurs by a signaling pathway involving REST, the GTPase-activating protein tuberin (TSC2) and the transcription co-factor beta-catenin. In PC12 cells, raised expression of REST correlates with reduced TSC2 levels, nuclear accumulation and co-transcriptional activation of beta-catenin, and increased expression of its target oncogenes Myc and Ccnd1, which might account for the proliferation advantage and the distinct morphology. Rest transcription is also increased, unveiling the existence of a self-sustaining, feed-forward REST-TSC2-beta-catenin signaling loop that is also operative in another neural cell model, NT2/D1 cells. Transfection of REST, knockdown of TSC2 or forced expression of active beta-catenin recapitulated the biochemical, functional and morphological properties of the high-expressing REST clone in wild-type PC12 cells. Upregulation of REST promoted proliferation and phenotypic changes, thus hindering neurosecretion. The new REST-TSC2-beta-catenin signaling paradigm might have an important role in various aspects of neural cell physiology and pathology, including the regulation of proliferation and neurosecretion
