    On Guichard's nets and Cyclic systems

    In the first part, we give a self contained introduction to the theory of cyclic systems in n-dimensional space which can be considered as immersions into certain Grassmannians. We show how the (metric) geometries on spaces of constant curvature arise as subgeometries of Moebius geometry which provides a slightly new viewpoint. In the second part we characterize Guichard nets which are given by cyclic systems as being Moebius equivalent to 1-parameter families of linear Weingarten surfaces. This provides a new method to study families of parallel Weingarten surfaces in space forms. In particular, analogs of Bonnet's theorem on parallel constant mean curvature surfaces can be easily obtained in this setting.Comment: 25 pages, plain Te

    Embracing the social nature of recovery:A longitudinal, qualitative, multi-perspective study on the resource group method for people with severe mental illness

    Objective: The resource group method for people with severe mental illness might provide a useful framework to facilitate patient's empowerment and systematically engage significant others. However, no research has explored the perspectives and experiences of patients and their significant others. This is crucial for better adjustment to the needs of the people using the method. The aim of this study was to develop a useful framework for a deeper understanding of the resource group method and its outcomes. Method: The study used a longitudinal, qualitative multiple case-study design based on grounded theory methodology. During a period of 2 years, the developments and processes in eight resource groups were explored by conducting a total of 74 interviews (e.g., with patients, significant others, and mental health professionals) and 26 observations of resource group meetings. Results: Analysis showed that a well-functioning resource group set the stage for five processes to unfold: (i) experience of support; (ii) acknowledgment of significant others; (iii) activation; (iv) openness; and (v) integration. These processes facilitated recovery both in terms of an arousing curiosity within the patient as well as increasing reciprocity and equality in their social relations. In addition, the method emphasized the uniqueness of each recovery journey, thereby providing a framework to shape recovery-oriented care. The analysis also revealed three hindering factors: (i) embedding and implementation issues; (ii) predominant network; and (iii) tensions inherent in the resource group setting. Conclusion: Working according to the resource group method involves that the person's recovery work becomes a social process that takes place in relation to the social environment and everyday life in which it is important to acknowledge and integrate the needs of significant others in treatment and care. This study provides a first step toward a multidimensional comprehension of the resource group method, the working mechanisms and its influence on recovery for people with severe mental illness

    3D characterization of diffusivities and its impact on mass flux and concentration overpotential in SOFC anodes

    In recent years great effort has been taken to understand the effect of gas transport on the performance of electrochemical devices. This study aims to characterize the diffusion regimes and the possible inaccuracies of the mass transport calculation in Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) anodes when a volume-averaged pore diameter is used. 3D pore size distribution is measured based on the extracted pore phase from an X-ray CT scan, which is further used for the calculation of a Knudsen number (Kn) map in the porous medium, followed by the voxel-based distribution of the effective diffusion coefficients for different fuel gases. Diffusion fluxes in a binary gas mixture using the lower boundary, upper boundary and average effective coefficients are compared, and the impact on overpotential is analyzed. The results show that pore diameters from tens to hundreds of nanometers result in a broad range of Knudsen number (1.1 ∼ 4.8 and 0.6 ∼ 3 for H2 and CH4 respectively), indicative of the transitional diffusion regime. The results highlight that for a porous material, such as an SOFC anode where Knudsen effects are non-negligible, using a volume-averaged pore size can overestimate the mass flux by ±200% compared to the actual value. The characteristic pore size should be chosen sensibly in order to improve the reliability of the mass transport and electrochemical performance evaluation

    N-Myc-induced metabolic rewiring creates novel therapeutic vulnerabilities in neuroblastoma

    N-Myc is a transcription factor that is aberrantly expressed in many tumor types and is often correlated with poor patient prognosis. Recently, several lines of evidence pointed to the fact that oncogenic activation of Myc family proteins is concomitant with reprogramming of tumor cells to cope with an enhanced need for metabolites during cell growth. These adaptions are driven by the ability of Myc proteins to act as transcriptional amplifiers in a tissue-of-origin specific manner. Here, we describe the effects of N-Myc overexpression on metabolic reprogramming in neuroblastoma cells. Ectopic expression of N-Myc induced a glycolytic switch that was concomitant with enhanced sensitivity towards 2-deoxyglucose, an inhibitor of glycolysis. Moreover, global metabolic profiling revealed extensive alterations in the cellular metabolome resulting from overexpression of N-Myc. Limited supply with either of the two main carbon sources, glucose or glutamine, resulted in distinct shifts in steady-state metabolite levels and significant changes in glutathione metabolism. Interestingly, interference with glutamine-glutamate conversion preferentially blocked proliferation of N-Myc overexpressing cells, when glutamine levels were reduced. Thus, our study uncovered N-Myc induction and nutrient levels as important metabolic master switches in neuroblastoma cells and identified critical nodes that restrict tumor cell proliferation

    'No place to hide' : stalking victimisation and its psycho-social effects

    Stalking victimisation has for a long time been ignored and minimised, and it has been traditionally regarded as a rare and mostly ‘celebrity-related’ phenomenon. However, research shows that stalking is far more common, and its impact can be serious and far-reaching. This article reveals and discusses the psycho-social effects of stalking, drawing on the in-depth accounts of twenty-six selfidentified victims who were interviewed as part of a study that explored the impact of stalking based on the victims’ voices and experiences. The study found that stalking victimisation is lifechanging and its psycho-social effects are complex, long-term and often traumatic. The article concludes by considering the implications of these findings where the need is stressed to improve criminological understanding of stalking and its unseen psycho-social harms so that victims and their cases are properly dealt with by the criminal justice system and society

    Alkaline anion exchange membrane degradation as a function of humidity measured using the quartz crystal microbalance

    The solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) alkaline anion exchange membrane (AAEM) fuel cell exhibits facile oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics and has the ability to utilise non-precious metal electrocatalysts. However, the AAEM is reported to suffer from increased instability within the alkaline media (degradation) via a number of routes, including nucleophilic elimination when operated at temperatures above 60 °C, somewhat eliminating the kinetic advantage of operating at higher temperatures. Nonetheless, modelling studies have indicated that the membrane hydration could show improved resistance to alkaline instability and subsequent degradation when operated at elevated temperatures. This investigation uses the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) to examine the thermal stability of a commercial AAEM as a function of humidity. The results show that hydration improves ionomer resistance to degradation, as the ions within the system (namely the OH- nucleophile and cationic headgroups) become less reactive. In-line mass spectrometry data confirms that the ionomer degrades during the elevated temperature excursions used in this study

    Differential Therapeutic Outcomes of Community-Based Group Interventions for Women and Children Exposed to Intimate Partner Violence

    Two community-based group therapies, emotion focused versus goal oriented, are compared among women exposed to intimate partner violence (n = 46) and their children ( n = 48) aged between 6 and 12 years. A series of repeated measures analyses are employed to evaluate the effects of time from baseline to postintervention following random assignment.
