These accomplishments include: (1) engine thermodynamic and mission models, (2) geometry model generators, (3) remeshing, (4) specialty three-dimensional inelastic structural analysis, (5) computationally efficient solvers, (6) adaptive solution strategies, (7) engine performance parameters/component response variables decomposition and synthesis, (8) integrated software architecture and development, and (9) validation cases for software developed

    Structural analysis demonstration of constitutive and life models

    The overall objective of this program is to demonstrate the applicability of NASA-developed advanced constitutive and life damage models for calculating cyclic structural response and crack initiation in selected components of reusable space propulsion systems. The computer model resulting from this program will enable the user to produce an accurate life prediction of hot gas path, life limiting components of propulsion systems such as the space shuttle main engine (SSME). Previously developed computer models addressing constitutive modeling and life damage will be combined in an advanced finite element analysis to generate a sophisticated baseline life prediction program. A material data base will be established for the constitutive and life models parametrically involving temperature, strain range, strain rate, mean strain/stress, and dwell time. The verified computer program will be used to accomplish the life predictions of three SSME critical components as evidence of the model functionality

    First Measurement of the Neutron β\beta-Asymmetry with Ultracold Neutrons

    We report the first measurement of angular correlation parameters in neutron β\beta-decay using polarized ultracold neutrons (UCN). We utilize UCN with energies below about 200 neV, which we guide and store for 30\sim 30 s in a Cu decay volume. The μnB\vec{\mu}_n \cdot \vec{B} potential of a static 7 T field external to the decay volume provides a 420 neV potential energy barrier to the spin state parallel to the field, polarizing the UCN before they pass through an adiabatic fast passage (AFP) spin-flipper and enter a decay volume, situated within a 1 T, 2×2π2 \times 2\pi superconducting solenoidal spectrometer. We determine a value for the β\beta-asymmetry parameter A0A_0, proportional to the angular correlation between the neutron polarization and the electron momentum, of A0=0.1138±0.0051A_0 = -0.1138 \pm 0.0051.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, 1 table, submitted to Phys.     Parity-violating Electron Deuteron Scattering and the Proton's Neutral Weak Axial Vector Form Factor

    We report on a new measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in quasielastic electron scattering from the deuteron at backward angles at Q2= 0.038 (GeV/c)2. This quantity provides a determination of the neutral weak axial vector form factor of the nucleon, which can potentially receive large electroweak corrections. The measured asymmetry A=-3.51 +/- 0.57(stat) +/- 0.58(sys)ppm is consistent with theoretical predictions. We also report on updated results of the previous experiment at Q2=0.091 (GeV/c)2, which are also consistent with theoretical predictions.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let

    First Results from KamLAND: Evidence for Reactor Anti-Neutrino Disappearance

    KamLAND has been used to measure the flux of νˉe\bar{\nu}_e's from distant nuclear reactors. In an exposure of 162 ton\cdotyr (145.1 days) the ratio of the number of observed inverse β\beta-decay events to the expected number of events without disappearance is 0.611±0.085(stat)±0.041(syst)0.611\pm 0.085 {\rm (stat)} \pm 0.041 {\rm (syst)} for νˉe\bar{\nu}_e energies >> 3.4 MeV. The deficit of events is inconsistent with the expected rate for standard νˉe\bar{\nu}_e propagation at the 99.95% confidence level. In the context of two-flavor neutrino oscillations with CPT invariance, these results exclude all oscillation solutions but the `Large Mixing Angle' solution to the solar neutrino problem using reactor νˉe\bar{\nu}_e sources.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure

    Observation of Hadronic W Decays in t-tbar Events with the Collider Detector at Fermilab

    We observe hadronic W decays in t-tbar -> W (-> l nu) + >= 4 jet events using a 109 pb-1 data sample of p-pbar collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). A peak in the dijet invariant mass distribution is obtained that is consistent with W decay and inconsistent with the background prediction by 3.3 standard deviations. From this peak we measure the W mass to be 77.2 +- 4.6 (stat+syst) GeV/c^2. This result demonstrates the presence of two W bosons in t-tbar candidates in the W (-> l nu) + >= 4 jet channel.Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PR
