The trauma and narratives of adult burn survivors : a South African perspective

Word processed copy.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 80-85)This research documents adult South African burn survivors' experiences of their lives and how their burns have affected them. The research question of the study was "How does a burn injury shape the life narratives of adult South African burn survivors?" In order to answer this, seven participants living in the Western Cape province of South Africa with a variety of demographics were interviewed utilising semi-structured interviews. A qualitative narrative analysis took place of these interviews- making use of the theoretical framework that the self, and experience, is created and understood through narrative. The results were then compared with the existing literature around trauma and narrative and similarities and differences were analysed. The predominant findings were that burn survivors had to deal with multiple traumas relating to their burn, the physical and psychological recovery from the injury, as well as their scarring and disfigurement. It was found that the experience and understanding of the trauma was created and maintained on a social level through norms and values, interpersonally through interactions with other people, as well as through the personal meaning that was made by the individual survivor. In all of the cases, the trauma represented a major disruption in the life narratives of the survivors. However with three of the participants, they said that other social issues in their lives (such as poverty) were more salient disruptions in their lives, and that their burn exacerbated their other difficulties. While all of the survivors talked about how difficult dealing with their burning and scarring has been, five of the seven participants defended against this difficulty by seeing their traumas as points in their lives where they felt like they improved as human beings. Four of the participants said that if they could have their lives over that they would choose to be burnt again, due to the sense of being improved or moulded constructively by their traumas

Synthesis and catalytic properties of highly branched palladium nanostructures using seeded growth

    Get PDF
In order to develop nanocatalysts with enhanced catalytic performance, it is important to be able to synthesize nanocrystals enclosed by high-index surface facets, due to their high density of low coordinated atoms at step, ledge and kink sites. Here, we report a facile seed-mediated route to the synthesis of highly branched Pd nanostructures with a combination of {113}, {115} and {220} high-index surface planes. The size of these nanostructures is readily controlled by a simple manipulation of the seed concentration. The selective use of oleylamine and oleic acid was also found to be critical to the synthesis of these structures, with Pd icosahedra enclosed by low-index {111} facets being produced when hexadecylamine was employed as capping ligand. The structure–property relationship of these nanostructures as catalysts in Suzuki-cross coupling reactions was then investigated and compared, with the high-index faceted branched Pd nanostructures found to be the most effective catalysts

Teaching Innovation as Part of an Agribusiness Curriculum

    Get PDF
Innovation is critical to the survival of agricultural businesses in the U.S. yet few universities have classes in their curricula that focus on innovation and innovation management. Innovation includes developing new processes and concepts and taking products based on those ideas to market. By its nature, innovation generally involves technical components, market assessment, business analysis, and implementation strategies that include marketing campaigns to a target market. As a result, if innovation is going to be experientially taught to students, the class will likely need to include concepts from multiple disciplines. The objectives of this paper are to present an outline of capstone/senior design classes designed to cause students to learn innovation by participating in interdisciplinary teams working with real companies on the development of new product innovation.Teaching/Communication/Extension/Profession,

Israeli Practices towards the Palestinian People and the Question of Apartheid

This report concludes that Israel has established an apartheid regime that dominates the Palestinian people as a whole. Available evidence establishes beyond a reasonable doubt that Israel is guilty of policies and practices that constitute the crime of apartheid as legally defined in international law

Perceptions and recall of treatment for prostate cancer: A survey of two populations

    Get PDF
Background: The complexity of prostate cancer care can impact on patient understanding and participation in shared decision-making. This study used a survey-based approach to investigate patients’ recall of their prostate cancer treatment, and more broadly, to understand the perceptions of patients and the general population of prostate cancer treatment. Method: The survey was completed by 236 patients with prostate cancer (PCa cohort) and 240 participants from the general population of Australia (GenPop cohort). Free-text comments from both cohorts were analysed using content analysis. The PCa cohort reported which treatments and image-guidance related procedures they had received. These patient-reports were compared to medical records and analysed using proportion agreement, kappa statistics and regression analysis. Results: 135 (57%) PCa and 99 (41%) GenPop respondents provided at least one comment. Five major themes were identified by both cohorts: sharing experiences of treatment; preferences insights and reflections; mindsets; general commentary on the survey; and factors missing from the survey. There was overall good treatment recall amongst the PCa cohort, with proportions of correct recall ranging from 97.3% for chemotherapy to 66.8% for hormone therapy. There was a tendency for younger patients (<70 years old) to recall their hormone treatment more correctly. Conclusion: Participant comments suggest the complexity of prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment, and the varying perceptions and experiences of participants with prostate cancer. Patients’ recall overall was good for both treatment and image-guidance related procedures/approaches, however the poorer recall of hormone therapy requires further investigation

Direct measurement of quantum phase gradients in superfluid 4He flow

We report a new kind of experiment in which we generate a known superfluid velocity in a straight tube and directly determine the phase difference across the tube's ends using a superfluid matter wave interferometer. By so doing, we quantitatively verify the relation between the superfluid velocity and the phase gradient of the condensate macroscopic wave function. Within the systematic error of the measurement (~10%) we find v_s=(hbar/m_4)*(grad phi)
