    Multilayer passive RF microfabrication using jet-printed Au nanoparticle ink and aerosol-deposited dielectric

    We report a bi-material additive microfabrication technique combining inkjet-printed gold films and an aerosol-deposited dielectric enamel for the realization of multilayer microsystems. Hexanethiol-encapsulated gold nanoparticle ink enables metal deposition at atmospheric pressure with a maximum temperature of 200°C. Dielectric patterning is achieved via shadow mask. Process utility is demonstrated for passive radio frequency components through the realization of spiral inductors and resonant parallel L-C tanks. The resulting device parameters agree well with theory, and the resonators exhibited a Q of 60 at 596MHz, the highest quality factor of an as-printed ink-jet microfabricated gold resonant structure to date. © 2013 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

    Inkjet printed multimetal microelectrodes on PDMS for functionalized microfluidic systems

    A novel direct method of metal microelectrode patterning on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) using inkjet printed gold and silver nanoparticles to form electrochemical sensors is presented. Inkjet printing is an additive microfabrication technique enabling microelectrode patterning directly over large areas at low-temperatures. (3-mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane (MPTMS) to promote PDMS surface wettability and improve metal adhesion and a pixel-printing subsampling method to overcome surface tension driven ink-droplet coalescence, are then employed to form a robust fabrication process. The resulting printed gold and silver microelectrodes exhibit good compactness, continuity and conductivity, and are used to manufacture functionalized microfluidic systems with in-situ three-electrode electrochemical sensors.published_or_final_versio

    An interstitial fluid transdermal extraction system for continuous glucose monitoring

    A novel microfluidic system which is fabricated with five polydimethylsiloxane layers for interstitial fluid (ISF) extraction, collection, and measurement toward the application of continuous and real-time glucose monitoring is presented in this paper. The system consists of a micro vacuum generator for ISF transdermal extraction and fluid manipulation, micro chambers for the collection of ISF, micro pneumatic valves for fluid management, and a micro flow sensor for ISF volume measurement. Sequentially controlled by the pneumatic valves, the ISF extraction, collection, and volumetric measurement functions of the system were demonstrated using the stable vacuum generated by the integrated vacuum generator. Through low-frequency ultrasound pretreated full-thickness pig skin, the normal saline solution with different glucose concentrations was transdermally extracted, collected, and measured. The absolute error in the volume measurement of the transdermally extracted ISF analog was less than 0.05 μ L. The microfluidic system makes it possible to realize the clinical application of continuous glucose monitoring based on ISF transdermal extraction technology. © 2012 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

    Analysis of the Stability of Openings Excavated in Anisotropic Rocks

    Openings excavated in rocks with anisotropic strength are often affected by serious instability, related to slip along the weakness planes. The Jaeger criterion, which is a discontinuous approach, is widely used in the mining and oil and gas industry, because is based on well-known rock strength parameters. However, this model cannot capture features related to the stability of openings drilled in some anisotropic rocks with the combined effect of the in situ state of stress. The Hoek & Brown criterion, adapted to anisotropic rocks, is a continuous criterion that can describe the complex behavior of different types of anisotropy exhibited by rock material. Here we interpreted the results of triaxial tests carried out on a shale and we defined the parameters of the Jaeger criterion and the modified Hoek & Brown criterion. We investigated the stability of boreholes drilled in this shale by varying the in situ state of stress and we compared the results of the two criteria. We found that the Hoek & Brown criterion can appropriately describe the behavior of this shale and can predict more accurately the width of the instability of openings excavated in different conditions

    Modified mallampati classification as a clinical predictor of peroral esophagogastroduodenoscopy tolerance

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Unsedated esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is simpler and safer than sedated EGD; however, approximately 40% of patients cannot tolerate it. Early identification of patients likely to poorly tolerate unsedated EGD is valuable for improving compliance. The modified Mallampati classification (MMC) has been used to evaluate difficult tracheal intubation and laryngoscope insertion. We tried to assess the efficacy of MMC to predict the tolerance of EGD in unsedated patients.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Two hundred patients who underwent an unsedated diagnostic EGD were recruited. They were stratified according to the view of the oropharynx as either MMC class I + II (good view) or class III + IV (poor view). EGD tolerance was assessed in three ways: gag reflex by endoscopist assessment, patient satisfaction by interview, and the degree of change in vital signs.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>MMC was significantly correlated to gag reflex (<it>P </it>< 0.001), patient satisfaction (<it>P </it>= 0.028), and a change of vital signs (<it>P </it>= 0.024). Patients in the poor view group had a 3.87-fold increased risk of gag reflex (<it>P </it>< 0.001), a 1.78-fold increased risk of unsatisfaction (<it>P </it>= 0.067), and a 1.96-fold increased risk of a change in vital signs (<it>P </it>= 0.025) compared to those in the good view group.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>MMC appears to be a clinically useful predictor of EGD tolerance. Patients with poor view of oropharynx by MMC criteria may be candidates for sedated or transnasal EGD.</p

    Protease Activity Increases in Plasma, Peritoneal Fluid, and Vital Organs after Hemorrhagic Shock in Rats

    Hemorrhagic shock (HS) is associated with high mortality. A severe decrease in blood pressure causes the intestine, a major site of digestive enzymes, to become permeable – possibly releasing those enzymes into the circulation and peritoneal space, where they may in turn activate other enzymes, e.g. matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). If uncontrolled, these enzymes may result in pathophysiologic cleavage of receptors or plasma proteins. Our first objective was to determine, in compartments outside of the intestine (plasma, peritoneal fluid, brain, heart, liver, and lung) protease activities and select protease concentrations after hemorrhagic shock (2 hours ischemia, 2 hours reperfusion). Our second objective was to determine whether inhibition of proteases in the intestinal lumen with a serine protease inhibitor (ANGD), a process that improves survival after shock in rats, reduces the protease activities distant from the intestine. To determine the protease activity, plasma and peritoneal fluid were incubated with small peptide substrates for trypsin-, chymotrypsin-, and elastase-like activities or with casein, a substrate cleaved by multiple proteases. Gelatinase activities were determined by gelatin gel zymography and a specific MMP-9 substrate. Immunoblotting was used to confirm elevated pancreatic trypsin in plasma, peritoneal fluid, and lung and MMP-9 concentrations in all samples after hemorrhagic shock. Caseinolytic, trypsin-, chymotrypsin-, elastase-like, and MMP-9 activities were all significantly (p<0.05) upregulated after hemorrhagic shock regardless of enteral pretreatment with ANGD. Pancreatic trypsin was detected by immunoblot in the plasma, peritoneal space, and lungs after hemorrhagic shock. MMP-9 concentrations and activities were significantly upregulated after hemorrhagic shock in plasma, peritoneal fluid, heart, liver, and lung. These results indicate that protease activities, including that of trypsin, increase in sites distant from the intestine after hemorrhagic shock. Proteases, including pancreatic proteases, may be shock mediators and potential targets for therapy in shock

    A free weekly iron-folic acid supplementation and regular deworming program is associated with improved hemoglobin and iron status indicators in Vietnamese women

    Background Anemia due to iron deficiency is recognized as one of the major nutritional deficiencies in women and children in developing countries. Daily iron supplementation for pregnant women is recommended in many countries although there are few reports of these programs working efficiently or effectively. Weekly iron-folic acid supplementation (WIFS) and regular deworming treatment is recommended for non-pregnant women living in areas with high rates of anemia. Following a baseline survey to assess the prevalence of anemia, iron deficiency and soil transmitted helminth infections, we implemented a program to make WIFS and regular deworming treatment freely and universally available for all women of reproductive age in two districts of a province in northern Vietnam over a 12 month period. The impact of the program at the population level was assessed in terms of: i) change in mean hemoglobin and iron status indicators, and ii) change in the prevalence of anemia, iron deficiency and hookworm infections. Method Distribution of WIFS and deworming were integrated with routine health services and made available to 52,000 women. Demographic data and blood and stool samples were collected in baseline, and three and 12-month post-implementation surveys using a population-based, stratified multi-stage cluster sampling design. Results The mean Hb increased by 9.6 g/L (95% CI, 5.7, 13.5, p < 0.001) during the study period. Anemia (Hb<120 g/L) was present in 131/349 (37.5%, 95% CI 31.3, 44.8) subjects at baseline, and in 70/363 (19.3%, 95% CI 14.0, 24.6) after twelve months. Iron deficiency reduced from 75/329 (22.8%, 95% CI 16.9, 28.6) to 33/353 (9.3%, 95% CI 5.7, 13.0) by the 12-mnth survey, and hookworm infection from 279/366 (76.2%,, 95% CI 68.6, 83.8) to 66/287 (23.0%, 95% CI 17.5, 28.5) over the same period.     Admixture Mapping Scans Identify a Locus Affecting Retinal Vascular Caliber in Hypertensive African Americans: the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study

    Retinal vascular caliber provides information about the structure and health of the microvascular system and is associated with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Compared to European Americans, African Americans tend to have wider retinal arteriolar and venular caliber, even after controlling for cardiovascular risk factors. This has suggested the hypothesis that differences in genetic background may contribute to racial/ethnic differences in retinal vascular caliber. Using 1,365 ancestry-informative SNPs, we estimated the percentage of African ancestry (PAA) and conducted genome-wide admixture mapping scans in 1,737 African Americans from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study. Central retinal artery equivalent (CRAE) and central retinal vein equivalent (CRVE) representing summary measures of retinal arteriolar and venular caliber, respectively, were measured from retinal photographs. PAA was significantly correlated with CRVE (ρ = 0.071, P = 0.003), but not CRAE (ρ = 0.032, P = 0.182). Using admixture mapping, we did not detect significant admixture association with either CRAE (genome-wide score = −0.73) or CRVE (genome-wide score = −0.69). An a priori subgroup analysis among hypertensive individuals detected a genome-wide significant association of CRVE with greater African ancestry at chromosome 6p21.1 (genome-wide score = 2.31, locus-specific LOD = 5.47). Each additional copy of an African ancestral allele at the 6p21.1 peak was associated with an average increase in CRVE of 6.14 µm in the hypertensives, but had no significant effects in the non-hypertensives (P for heterogeneity <0.001). Further mapping in the 6p21.1 region may uncover novel genetic variants affecting retinal vascular caliber and further insights into the interaction between genetic effects of the microvascular system and hypertension

    Dynamic assembly of ribbon synapses and circuit maintenance in a vertebrate sensory system

    Ribbon synapses transmit information in sensory systems, but their development is not well understood. To test the hypothesis that ribbon assembly stabilizes nascent synapses, we performed simultaneous time-lapse imaging of fluorescently-tagged ribbons in retinal cone bipolar cells (BCs) and postsynaptic densities (PSD95-FP) of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). Ribbons and PSD95-FP clusters were more stable when these components colocalized at synapses. However, synapse density on ON-alpha RGCs was unchanged in mice lacking ribbons (ribeye knockout). Wildtype BCs make both ribbon-containing and ribbon-free synapses with these GCs even at maturity. Ribbon assembly and cone BC-RGC synapse maintenance are thus regulated independently. Despite the absence of synaptic ribbons, RGCs continued to respond robustly to light stimuli, although quantitative examination of the responses revealed reduced frequency and contrast sensitivity
