    Evaluating IP surveillance camera vulnerabilities

    Hacking of IP surveillance camera systems came to public attention in 2016 when the high bandwidth and resources were exploited for a massive DDoS attack that affected one third of all US Internet services. A review of previous studies show that a vast number of IP cameras have been hacked because the default usernames and passwords have not been changed from the factory defaults. In this research we asked, What are the vulnerabilities of an IP surveillance camera? The purpose of the study was to provide identification of vulnerabilities and guidance for the protection of surveillance camera systems. The research shows that the tested surveillance camera had many vulnerabilities and that there is urgency for distributing alerts and best practice guidelines

    Detecting and tracing slow attacks on mobile phone user service

    The lower bandwidth of mobile devices has until recently filtered the range of attacks on the Internet. However, recent research shows that DOS and DDOS attacks, worms and viruses, and a whole range of social engineering attacks are impacting on broadband smartphone users. In our research we have developed a metric-based system to detect the traditional slow attacks that can be effective using limited resources, and then employed combinations of Internet trace back techniques to identify sources of attacks. Our research question asked: What defence mechanisms are effective? We critically evaluate the available literature to appraise the current state of the problem area and then propose an innovative solution for the detection and investigation of attacks

    Development of Self-Sensing Cementitious Composites with Magnetically Aligned Particles

Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology.Self-sensing cementitious composites as a type of smart material, have the ability to sense external loads and environmental changes through piezoresistive properties. They have the advantages of high sensitivity, good compatibility, low maintenance cost and hence great potential to be applied in structure health monitoring, weight in motion and traffic detection. The sensing function of the composites is achieved via the network formed of conductive particles which are randomly dispersed in the cement matrix. However, this isotropic network may not be used to its full capacity in a unidirectional loading scenario, and the composites with nickel powder share a disadvantage of high particle demand. This leads to a diminishment in mechanical strength and cement workability. This study introduces an innovative method to align the nickel particles into chain patterns utilising the magnetic field in the fresh stage of cement and the structure is retained with the solidification process. Resistance measurement shows that resistivity declines significantly and the percolation threshold is advanced to a much smaller particle content when using the proposed method. Additionally, the anisotropic conductive chains exhibit enhanced piezoresistive performance and significant sensitivity with high gauge factor. Also investigated here are the influence of ferromagnetic particles morphology and magnetic parameters such as magnetic field strength and duration, the objective being to greatly improve the composites’ piezoresistive performance. Finally, the embedment of proposed cement sensors in a beam signifies a further contribution to the possibility of using magnetically aligned nickel particles in practical situations
