Editorial: Cancer Nanotheranostics: What Have We Learned So Far?
According to the National Cancer Institute, in 2015 an estimated of 1.7 million new cases of cancer will be diagnosed only in the United States and around 600, 000 people will die from the disease. The most common type of cancer is breast cancer, with more than 234, 000 new cases expected in the United States in 2015. The next most common cancers are prostate cancer and lung cancer. After a quarter of century of rapid technological advances, research has revealed the complexity of cancer, a disease intimately related to the dynamic transformation of the genome. These transformations trigger a range of modification to cell processes and molecular events that initiate and promote tumor genesis and progression, then local invasion and metastasis, i.e., the hallmarks of cancer development. These alterations may cause a wide scope of “diseases” that share similar molecular patterns that cause transformation and malignancy. Each of this stepwise evolution of the initial molecular event drives abnormal growth and loss of differentiation that ultimately causes tissue and organ failure. The initial molecular event may lay within the erroneous expression of a given gene, epigenetic modification and/or sporadic mutations occurring on genomic DNA during the life span of organisms. Each and every one of these molecular events may be evaluated and used as diagnostics biomarker and therapeutic target. For example, therapy action may target a mutated gene and silence its expression so as to avoid erroneous protein expression that mutates cell function. However, the full understanding of the molecular onset of this disease is still far from achieved and the search for mechanisms of treatment will follow closely..

Explosive events - swirling transition region jets
In this paper, we extend our earlier work to provide additional evidence for
an alternative scenario to explain the nature of so-called `explosive events'.
The bi-directed, fast Doppler motion of explosive events observed
spectroscopically in the transition region emission is classically interpreted
as a pair of bidirectional jets moving upward and downward from a reconnection
site. We discuss the problems of such a model. In our previous work, we focused
basically on the discrepancy of fast Doppler motion without detectable motion
in the image plane. We now suggest an alternative scenario for the explosive
events, based on our observations of spectral line tilts and bifurcated
structure in some events. Both features are indicative of rotational motion in
narrow structures. We explain the bifurcation as the result of rotation of
hollow cylindrical structures and demonstrate that such a sheath model can also
be applied to explain the nature of the puzzling `explosive events'. We find
that the spectral tilt, the lack of apparent motion, the bifurcation, and a
rapidly growing number of direct observations support an alternative scenario
of linear, spicular-sized jets with a strong spinning motion.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Solar Physic
The classical R-matrix of AdS/CFT and its Lie dialgebra structure
The classical integrable structure of Z_4-graded supercoset sigma-models,
arising in the AdS/CFT correspondence, is formulated within the R-matrix
approach. The central object in this construction is the standard R-matrix of
the Z_4-twisted loop algebra. However, in order to correctly describe the Lax
matrix within this formalism, the standard inner product on this twisted loop
algebra requires a further twist induced by the Zhukovsky map, which also plays
a key role in the AdS/CFT correspondence. The non-ultralocality of the
sigma-model can be understood as stemming from this latter twist since it leads
to a non skew-symmetric R-matrix.Comment: 22 pages, 2 figure
Entropic force and its cosmological implications
We investigate a possibility of realizing the entropic force into the
cosmology. A main issue is how the holographic screen is implemented in the
Newtonian cosmology. Contrary to the relativistic realization of Friedmann
equations, we do not clarify the connection between Newtonian cosmology and
entropic force because there is no way of implementing the holographic screen
in the Newtonian cosmology.Comment: 16 pages, no figures, version "Accepted for publication in

Dibaryon Spectroscopy
The AdS/CFT correspondence relates dibaryons in superconformal gauge theories
to holomorphic curves in Kaehler-Einstein surfaces. The degree of the
holomorphic curves is proportional to the gauge theory conformal dimension of
the dibaryons. Moreover, the number of holomorphic curves should match, in an
appropriately defined sense, the number of dibaryons. Using AdS/CFT backgrounds
built from the generalized conifolds of Gubser, Shatashvili, and Nekrasov
(1999), we show that the gauge theory prediction for the dimension of
dibaryonic operators does indeed match the degree of the corresponding
holomorphic curves. For AdS/CFT backgrounds built from cones over del Pezzo
surfaces, we are able to match the degree of the curves to the conformal
dimension of dibaryons for the n'th del Pezzo surface, n=1,2,...,6. Also, for
the del Pezzos and the A_k type generalized conifolds, for the dibaryons of
smallest conformal dimension, we are able to match the number of holomorphic
curves with the number of possible dibaryon operators from gauge theory.Comment: 30 pages, 6 figures, corrected refs; v3 typos correcte
New checks and subtleties for AdS/CFT and a-maximization
We provide a cross-check of AdS/CFT and a-charge maximization for a four
dimensional =1 SCFT with irrational R-charges. The gauge theory is the low
energy effective theory of N D3-branes at the tip of the complex cone over the
first del Pezzo surface. By carefully taking into account the subtle issue of
flavor symmetry breaking at the fixed point, we show, using a-maximization,
that this theory has in fact irrational central charge and R-charges. Our
results perfectly match with those inherited from the recently discovered
supergravity dual background. Along analogous lines, we make novel predictions
for the still unknown AdS dual of the quiver theory for the second del Pezzo
surface. This should flow to a SCFT with irrational charges, too. All of our
results differ from previous findings in the literature and outline interesting
subtleties in a-maximization and AdS/CFT techniques overlooked in the past.Comment: Latex, 16 pagex, 2 figures; v2, comments and a reference added; v3,

Monolithically Integrated Temperature Sensor in an InP-based Generic Integration Technology
We have developed various monolithically integrated temperature sensors to locally measure the temperature of InP-based photonic integrated circuits. These sensors are based on InP diodes with either an active multi-quantum well structure or a passive bulk quaternary structure. They have been fabricated in the generic integration process of SMART Photonics. We theoretically and experimentally explored the temperature dependence in the diode characteristics. Our results show that the devices are suitable for on-chip monitoring of the operating temperature of photonic integrated circuits. Integrating a temperature sensor on-chip enables a more local temperature measurement compared to using an external temperature sensor. This should be advantageous for temperature control of photonic integrated circuits
Josephson-phase qubit without tunneling
We show that a complete set of one-bit gates can be realized by coupling the
two logical states of a phase qubit to a third level (at higher energy) using
microwave pulses. Thus, one can achieve coherent control without invoking any
tunneling between the qubit levels. We propose two implementations, using
rf-SQUIDs and d-wave Josephson junctions.Comment: REVTeX4, 4pp., 6 EPS figure files; N.B.: "Alec" is my first, and
