    STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM: A study to evaluate the effectiveness of group therapy on depression among alcoholics at a selected de-addiction centre in Madurai. OBJECTIVES: 1. To assess level of depression comparing between the control and experimental before Interventation. 2. To assess the level of depression comparing between control and experimental after Interventation. 3. To assess the effectiveness between the control and experimental group. 4. To assess the pre test associated between the demographical variable and level of depression. HYPOTHESES: There significant difference in the level of depression before and after group therapy among alcohol dependency, there is a statistically significant association between level of depression and demographic variable. METHODOLOGY: Quasi experimental research design (Pre-test and post-test control group design was used 60 adults were selected at de-addiction centre in Madurai, pre test was conducted on first day after obtaining consent, group therapy was given for 1 ½ hours daily in the morning for 10 consecutive days and post test on 11th day by using beck depression inventory scale. FINDINGS: The group therapy improved the level of depression among alcoholics, there was a significant association between post test level of depression and adult age educational status, monthly income, amount of alcohol taken per day, occupational. CONCLUSION: The present study assessed the effectiveness of group therapy on depression among adults in selected in de-addiction centre in Madurai. The result of the study concluded that group therapy has reduced the depression among alcoholics, it will enhances an overall sense of will being as well as improvement in the quality of lif

    Effect of provision of an integrated neonatal survival kit and early cognitive stimulation package by community health workers on developmental outcomes of infants in Kwale County, Kenya: study protocol for a cluster randomized trial

    Background: Each year, more than 200 million children under the age of 5 years, almost all in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), fail to achieve their developmental potential. Risk factors for compromised development often coexist and include inadequate cognitive stimulation, poverty, nutritional deficiencies, infection and complications of being born low birthweight and/or premature. Moreover, many of these risk factors are closely associated with newborn morbidity and mortality. As compromised development has significant implications on human capital, inexpensive and scalable interventions are urgently needed to promote neurodevelopment and reduce risk factors for impaired development. Method/Design: This cluster randomized trial aims at evaluating the impact of volunteer community health workers delivering either an integrated neonatal survival kit, an early stimulation package, or a combination of both interventions, to pregnant women during their third trimester of pregnancy, compared to the current standard of care in Kwale County, Kenya. The neonatal survival kit comprises a clean delivery kit (sterile blade, cord clamp, clean plastic sheet, surgical gloves and hand soap), sunflower oil emollient, chlorhexidine, ThermoSpotTM, Mylar infant sleeve, and a reusable instant heater. Community health workers are also equipped with a portable hand-held electric scale. The early cognitive stimulation package focuses on enhancing caregiver practices by teaching caregivers three key messages that comprise combining a gentle touch with making eye contact and talking to children, responsive feeding and caregiving, and singing. The primary outcome measure is child development at 12 months of age assessed with the Protocol for Child Monitoring (Infant and Toddler version). The main secondary outcome is newborn mortality. Discussion: This study will provide evidence on effectiveness of delivering an innovative neonatal survival kit and/or early stimulation package to pregnant women in Kwale County, Kenya. Study findings will help inform policy on the most appropriate interventions for promoting healthy brain development and reduction of newborn morbidity and mortality in Kenya and other similar settings.     Molecular-genetic characterization of human parvovirus B19 prevalent in Kerala State, India

    peer-reviewedBackground Human parvovirus B19V is a DNA virus, and a member of the family Parvoviridae, that causes various clinical manifestations, from asymptomatic to persistent infection that is associated with different autoimmune diseases. The parvovirus B19 evolves with a very high mutation rate that is closer to those of existing RNA viruses. Globally circulating B19V is currently classified into three genotypes, but their distribution is not spatially and temporally correlated. Except for a few recent reports on B19V entry into the human host and its genetic diversity, there is a lack of sufficient studies on this virus from distinct geographical locations and no clear understanding of its evolution has been documented. Methods To better understand the evolution of the Human parvo B19V virus from India's southern part, a geographically distinct location with no reports of B19V genomes, we have screened for B19V in 456 suspected cases using VP1/2 surface marker genes, and its characteristics were studied in detail. Amongst 456 clinically suspected B19V samples, 7.2% (33/456) were found positive by nested PCR (nPCR) were subsequently validated by real-time PCR, Sanger sequencing, and metagenome analysis. Results Human parvovirus B19 infection was shown among 33 of 456 patients when tested by nPCR; 30 among these were also positive by qPCR and were subsequently confirmed by sequencing 75% nPCR positive samples and 76% qPCR positive samples were from patients with age. ≥ 50 years respectively (Additional file 1: Table S1). The complete VP1/2 gene assembly from the South Indian strain showed three novel mutations (T122A, V128I, I283V), which might significantly impact the stability and virulence of the B19V virus circulating in this part of the world. These mutations might be crucial for its adaptive evolutionary strategies facilitating the spread and infectivity potential of the virus. In maximum likelihood phylogeny of VP1/2 sequences, the South Indian B19V strain forms a separate clade closer to the existing genotype two strains circulating worldwide. Conclusion Our study contributes to a better understanding of the human parvovirus's genetic and evolutionary characteristics in South India. Also, it highlights the possibility that a positive selection pressure acting on VP1/2 could increase the survival and replication capabilities of the viruses

    A Review—Additive Manufacturing of Intermetallic Alloys Based on Orthorhombic Titanium Aluminide Ti2AlNb

    Titanium alloys based on orthorhombic titanium aluminide Ti2AlNb are promising refractory materials for aircraft engine parts in the operating temperature range from 600–700 °C. Parts made of Ti2AlNb-based alloys by traditional technologies, such as casting and metal forming, have not yet found wide application due to the sensitivity of processability and mechanical properties in chemical composition and microstructure compared with commercial solid-solution-based titanium alloys. In the last three decades, metal additive manufacturing (MAM) has attracted the attention of scientists and engineers for the production of intermetallic alloys based on Ti2AlNb. This review summarizes the recent achievements in the production of O-phase-based Ti alloys using MAM, including the analysis of the feedstock materials, technological processes, machines, microstructure, phase composition and mechanical properties. Powder bed fusion (PBF) and direct energy deposition (DED) are the most widely employed MAM processes to produce O-phase alloys. MAM provides fully dense, fine-grained material with a superior combination of mechanical properties at room temperature. Further research on MAM for the production of critical parts made of Ti2AlNb-based alloys can be focused on a detailed study of the influence of post-processing and chemical composition on the formation of the structure and mechanical properties, including cyclic loading, fracture toughness, and creep resistance. © 2023 by the authors.22–49-02066This work has been supported by joint RSF-DST grant № 22–49-02066

    Inferential Procedures for Comparing the Accuracy and Intrinsic Measures of Multivariate Receiver Operating Characteristic (MROC) Curve

    A number of classification techniques are prevailing in literature. Of them, one of the most important techniques is the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve. A multivariate extension of this technique is proposed in the recent years. This technique helps in classifying the objects/individuals into one of the two classes by considering two or more markers. The most important measure of an ROC curve is the Area Under the Curve (AUC) and it explains the accuracy and discriminating ability of the test under study. There are two intrinsic measures of ROC namely sensitivity (Sn) and specificity (Sp). Further, two ROC curves can be compared by comparing their measures. The practical application of the proposed inferential procedures is explained with the help of two real datasets namely, Indian Liver Patient (ILP) Dataset and Intra Uterine Growth Restricted Fetal Doppler Study (IUGRFDS) dataset. These inferential procedures are developed based on the measures of multivariate ROC (MROC) curve proposed by Sameera G, R Vishnu Vardhan and KVS Sarma [1]

    Influence of Si-C bond density on the properties of a-Si(1-x)C(x) thin films

    Amorphous silicon carbide (a-Si(1-x)C(x)) films were deposited on silicon (100) and quartz substrates by pulsed DC reactive magnetron sputtering of silicon in methane (CH(4))-Argon (Ar) atmosphere. The influence of substrate temperature and target power on the composition, carbon bonding configuration, band gap, refractive index and hardness of a-SiC films has been investigated. Increase in substrate temperature results in slightly decreasing the carbon concentration in the films but favors silicon-carbon (Si-C) bonding. Also lower target powers were favorable towards Si-C bonding. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results agree with the Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), UV-vis spectroscopy results. Increase in substrate temperature resulted in increased hardness of the thin films from 13 to 17 GPa and the corresponding bandgap varied from 2.1 to 1.8 eV. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V.
