Poverty Targeting and Impact of a Governmental Micro-credit Program in Vietnam

    Get PDF
It is argued that without collateral the poor often face binding borrowing constraints in the formal credit market. This justifies a micro-credit program, which is operated by the Vietnam Bank for Social Policies to provide the poor with preferential credit. This paper examines poverty targeting and impact of the micro-credit program. It is found that the program is not very pro-poor in terms of targeting. Among the participants, the non-poor account for a larger proportion of loans. The non-poor also tend to receive larger amounts of credit compared to the poor. However, the program has positive impact on poverty reduction of the participants. This positive impact is found for all the three Foster-Greer-Thorbecke poverty measures.Micro-credit, poverty, poverty targeting, impact evaluation, instrumental variables, fixed-effect model

Application of design thinking to implement innovation policy in teaching table tennis for students – the case of Vietnam National University, Hanoi

    Get PDF
Design-Thinking is very innovative process and could be applied as innovative teaching. The current situation of teaching table tenis at Vietnam National University, Hanoi, one of the leading universities in Vietnam shows that the traditional teaching method (passive learning) of table tenis is not approriate. Therefore, Design-Thinking (process of Empathize - Define - Ideate - Prototype - Test) is very necessary for teaching table tennis for students at Vietnam National University, Hanoi, which helps students to get better results from real-world experiences on their own learning and through projects and help them to understand the importance of fitness. The papers will firstly review what is Design-Thinking, its advantages in teaching table tenis, then analyse the current situation of teaching table tenis in Vietnam National University, Hanoi and show the results of design-thinking application for teaching table tenis for students of Vietnam National University, Hanoi to recommend some solutions for better application of this method in future

Based on The Theory of Adoption and Use of Technology (UTAUT) (Venkatesh et al., 2003), this study builds a research model regarding the Factors affecting Vietnamese consumers' online impulsive buying behavior. The multiple regression results reveal that Performance Expectancy, Effort Expectancy, Social Influence, and Online Buying Intention play a crucial role in amplifying the development of online impulsive buying behavior in Vietnam. This research aims were to examine teachers’ perceptions of listening inferencing skills (LIS) and their significance for listening comprehension. In addition, the pedagogical techniques that teachers report to have employed in teaching LIS were also investigated. In order to achieve these goals, a questionnaire consisting of 48 five-point Likert scale items and one open-ended question was utilized as the research instrument. Seventy-two EFL teachers working at different universities, colleges and private language centres in a province in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam gave their responses to the questionnaires. The results revealed that a significant number of teachers appeared to hold a limited understanding of what LIS actually refer to. However, when they were introduced to what LIS involve, they noticeably reached the agreement that these skills are beneficial for listening comprehension in particular and language learning in general. Besides, a large number of the participants also reported that they applied LIS in their own English language learning and teaching. In terms of pedagogical techniques used to teach LIS, the teachers mainly concentrated on pre-listening tactics with the hope of equipping their students well for the listening process regarding linguistic and background knowledge while techniques for the while-, post- and extension stages in listening instruction seemed to be overlooked.  Article visualizations

DOMAIN ABSTRACTION OF HIGHLY CORRELATED PAIRS TO RECOMMEND IN THE LONG TAIL

    Get PDF
ABSTRACTAmong difficulties encountered by modern shopping recommenders is the long tail shape of sold items also related to cold-start issues. Various approaches including content-based recommendations attempt to overcome this problem that has serious impact on the accuracy of recommendations especially when new products are continuously added to the catalogue. This paper investigates the use of an algorithm to search for highly correlated pairs between abstractions of items. The advantage of this approach is evaluated on the basis of real data showing better results compared to an approach onlybased on the concrete pairs of items. Using rigorous protocols such as Given-n, experimental results show significant improvement in both the recommendation accuracy and the recommendation of products in the long tail.Keywords.
