Sustainable bioethanol production combining biorefinery principles using combined raw materials from wheat undersown with clover-grass

To obtain the best possible net energy balance of the bioethanol production the biomass raw materials used need to be produced with limited use of non-renewable fossil fuels. Intercropping strategies are known to maximize growth and productivity by including more than one species in the crop stand, very often with legumes as one of the components. In the present study clover-grass is undersown in a traditional wheat crop. Thereby, it is possible to increase input of symbiotic fixation of atmospheric nitrogen into the cropping systems and reduce the need for fertilizer applications. Furthermore, when using such wheat and clover-grass mixtures as raw material, addition of urea and other fermentation nutrients produced from fossil fuels can be reduced in the whole ethanol manufacturing chain. Using second generation ethanol technology mixtures of relative proportions of wheat straw and clover-grass (15:85, 50:50, and 85:15) were pretreated by wet oxidation. The results showed that supplementing wheat straw with clover-grass had a positive effect on the ethanol yield in simultaneous saccharification and fermentation experiments, and the effect was more pronounced in inhibitory substrates. The highest ethanol yield (80% of theoretical) was obtained in the experiment with high fraction (85%) of clover-grass. In order to improve the sugar recovery of clover-grass, it should be separated into a green juice (containing free sugars, fructan, amino acids, vitamins and soluble minerals) for direct fermentation and a fibre pulp for pretreatment together with wheat straw. Based on the obtained results a decentralized biorefinery concept for production of biofuel is suggested emphasizing sustainability, localness, and recycling principle

The Influence of the Home and Hospital Program on Pregnant School-Age Girls

The effects of the Home and Hospital Program upon entry, as contrasted with termination, on the neurotic tendencies and attitudes of pregnant school-age girls were studied using a sample of 25 pregnant junior and senior high school students in the Ogden City School District. Of the Four areas tested for neuroticism no difference was found between the time of entry and exit from the program. These pregnant girls did not test in the neurotic range and rate above the general population in only one component of neuroticism, Submissiveness . The other components tested in the average range. Of the 8 areas on attitudes which were tested there was a difference from unfavorable to favorable attitude change toward school related subjects such as, school personnel, class participation, and preparation, and future educational goals.. The attitudes which seemed not to be affected to any great extent by the Home and Hospital Program were those towards circumstances and persons outside the school, such as , parents, husbands, peers and frustrations

Urban and rural implementation of pre-hospital diagnosis and direct referral for primary percutaneous coronary intervention in patients with acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction

    Get PDF
Primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is the preferred treatment for ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). The distance to primary PCI centres and the inherent time delay in delivering primary PCI, however, limit widespread use of this treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of pre-hospital diagnosis on time from emergency medical services contact to balloon inflation (system delay) in an unselected cohort of patients with STEMI recruited from a large geographical area comprising both urban and rural districts

From a social constructivist point of view this thesis investigates how e-commerce of grocery develops in the period 1998-2003. The empirical research is done in Sweden. Most Swedish grocery concerns that have had e-commerce and have been forced to shut down as a result of lack of demand. The starting point for this thesis is that technological development is an ongoing process where different actors participate. Likewise, technological invention cannot be considered finished before it is in use. Therefore in this thesis consumer - as well as supplier perspectives are investigated. The analysis focuses on understanding how different knowledge and practices in these two contexts affect the development of e-commerce of groceries. Empirical data from the supplier side shows that technical solutions for online grocery shopping arose from certain perceptions in the grocery business and IT sector. In the late 90's there was a strong faith in ICT (information- and communication technology) which affected how venture interests invested in new IT-applications. Empirical data show that among suppliers there is a rather narrow perception of consumers? use of e-commerce in grocery shopping. This perception of consumer needs is contradicted by the analysis of consumer behavior which shows how Internet use is embedded in contexts of everyday life and how consumer skills are used in shopping. It is particularly households with several family members that use the Internet for grocery shopping and it is especially women who are purchasing groceries on the Internet. The empirical data shows how consumers form strategies for buying groceries on the Internet. Typically consumers prefer to purchase certain kinds of products in the store and other kinds on the Internet. This stems from the fact that consumers feel it is important to have physical contact with especially fresh products. This can be interpreted to mean that the shopping is a way of expressing affection for family members. Another finding is that dilemmas arose in the work of shopping. There is a need for being effective in shopping but also a need for precise investigation of products and accuracy in selecting. E-commerce cannot fully satisfy shopping needs, and it is only seen as a complement among families using it. Thus, e-commerce is used in correspondence with consumer skills in the household. The thesis shows the gendered aspects of shopping and the importance of understanding consumer culture where technology is introduced

Key Elements of a File Format Strategy

Within the Digital Preservation Community there are many references to policies on file formats, acceptable file formats, preservation policies and strategies, risk matrices, and action plans. All have the intention of defining and describing file formats and guiding decisions on which formats to preserve how, and when. My team and I originally created a File Format Action Plan, which was later migrated from OneNote to Confluence and then included more strategic plans for hundreds of file formats. This paper explores which key elements should be included in an effective file format strategy and the different ways such data can be used by people and systems. What works for one institution may not work for another, and the work created by a larger institution may benefit those with smaller resources

How play enhances creativity in problem based learning

This article draws on 20 Danish university students’ reflections in and on a Problem-based Learning process (PBL). The study showed how a more playful approach changed how the students collaborated, communicated, and approached a given task. They felt more creative, open minded and engaged compared to some of their earlier learning experiences. They sensed a change in how they interacted with each other, a different tone arose in their social bonding, which led to the overall question for this article: What happens when play becomes part of a PBL process and how can we understand the relation between play and creativity in higher education learning processes
