A numerical comparison of discrete Kalman filtering algorithms: An orbit determination case study
The numerical stability and accuracy of various Kalman filter algorithms are thoroughly studied. Numerical results and conclusions are based on a realistic planetary approach orbit determination study. The case study results of this report highlight the numerical instability of the conventional and stabilized Kalman algorithms. Numerical errors associated with these algorithms can be so large as to obscure important mismodeling effects and thus give misleading estimates of filter accuracy. The positive result of this study is that the Bierman-Thornton U-D covariance factorization algorithm is computationally efficient, with CPU costs that differ negligibly from the conventional Kalman costs. In addition, accuracy of the U-D filter using single-precision arithmetic consistently matches the double-precision reference results. Numerical stability of the U-D filter is further demonstrated by its insensitivity of variations in the a priori statistics
Portable x-ray fluorescence spectrometer for environmental monitoring of inorganic pollutants
A portable x-ray fluorescence spectrometer has a portable sensor unit containing a battery, a high voltage power supply, an x-ray tube which produces a beam x-ray radiation directed toward a target sample, and a detector for fluorescent x-rays produced by the sample. If a silicon-lithium detector is used, the sensor unit also contains either a thermoelectric or thermochemical cooler, or a small dewar flask containing liquid nitrogen to cool the detector. A pulse height analyzer (PHA) generates a spectrum of data for each sample consisting of the number of fluorescent x-rays detected as a function of their energy level. The PHA can also store spectrum data for a number of samples in the field. A processing unit can be attached to the pulse height analyzer to upload and analyze the stored spectrum data for each sample. The processing unit provides a graphic display of the spectrum data for each sample, and provides qualitative and/or quantitative analysis of the elemental composition of the sample by comparing the peaks in the sample spectrum against known x-ray energies for various chemical elements. An optional filtration enclosure can be used to filter particles from a sample suspension, either in the form of a natural suspension or a chemically created precipitate. The sensor unit is then temporarily attached to the filtration unit to analyze the particles collected by the filter medium
Structure of a model TiO2 photocatalytic interface
The interaction of water with TiO2 is crucial to many of its practical
applications, including photocatalytic water splitting. Following the first
demonstration of this phenomenon 40 years ago there have been numerous studies
of the rutile single-crystal TiO2(110) interface with water. This has provided
an atomic-level understanding of the water-TiO2 interaction. However, nearly
all of the previous studies of water/TiO2 interfaces involve water in the
vapour phase. Here, we explore the interfacial structure between liquid water
and a rutile TiO2(110) surface pre-characterized at the atomic level. Scanning
tunnelling microscopy and surface X-ray diffraction are used to determine the
structure, which is comprised of an ordered array of hydroxyl molecules with
molecular water in the second layer. Static and dynamic density functional
theory calculations suggest that a possible mechanism for formation of the
hydroxyl overlayer involves the mixed adsorption of O2 and H2O on a partially
defected surface. The quantitative structural properties derived here provide a
basis with which to explore the atomistic properties and hence mechanisms
involved in TiO2 photocatalysis
Ordered Carboxylates on TiO (110) Formed at Aqueous Interfaces
As models for probing the interactions between TiO2 surfaces and the dye molecules employed in dye-sensitized solar cells, carboxylic acids are an important class of molecules. In this work we present a scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED)
study of three small carboxylic acids (formic, acetic, and benzoic) that were reacted with the TiO2(110) surface via a dipping procedure. The three molecules display quite different adsorption behavior, illustrating the different inter-adsorbate interactions that can occur. After
exposure to a 10 mM solution, formic acid forms a rather disordered formate overlayer with two distinct binding geometries. Acetic acid forms a well-ordered (2 Ă 1) acetate overlayer similar to that observed following deposition from vapor. Benzoic acid forms a (2 Ă 2) overlayer which is stabilized by intermolecular interactions between the phenyl groups
Profiling The Physiological Parameters of Boxers in The Parachute Regiment. âEvery Man an Emperorâ
This study aimed to collect and identify the physiological parameters that are required to produce winning performances in an army boxing competition. Army boxing competitions are sanctioned and governed by âEngland Boxingâ and consist of three rounds of two minutes with one-minute restorative periods. The Parachute Regiment are an elite infantry fighting force within the British military, with a continued success in the inter-army boxing championships. 22 male participants were recruited (mean ± SD age 28 ± 2 years, stature 178 ± 8.1cm, body mass 79 ± 7.1 kg, BMI 24.9 ±2.5).Body fat %. VÌOâmax, lower limb power, and 1RM max strength test protocols for back squat and bench press were performed. Additionally, impact punch power measured from rear hand cross strikes, and punching velocities were measured using a linear positional transducer. Countermovement (CMJ) and repetitive (n=10) jump data were collected using a jump mat. The physiological parameters in mean scores; body composition showed body fat 11.8±8.1%: CMJ height 35.5±5cm: Repetitive jump 28.5±5.6cm: Wingate peak power (body mass to power ratio) 11.5±1.6W/kg: Wingate average power, 8.1±1.4W/kg: VÌOâmax 53±4.8 ml.kgâ»Âč.minâ»Âč: Back squat (body mass to weight lifted ratio) 1.95±0.2kg: Bench press 1.1±0.1kg/BW: Rear cross strike velocity 8.47±0.8m/s: Impact power 15227±2250W. Significant relationships were observed between anthropometric data and power, strike velocity and VÌOâmax in addition to relationships being evident between some strength and power variables. by the participants in this study. Although punch impact power is an essential performance indicator in boxing, other physiological factors, such as lower limb power and strength have been demonstrated to attribute to the continued winning performances by 3PARA boxing team
Aharonov-Bohm cages in the GaAlAs/GaAs system
Aharonov-Bohm oscillations have been observed in a lattice formed by a two
dimensional rhombus tiling. This observation is in good agreement with a recent
theoretical calculation of the energy spectrum of this so-called T3 lattice. We
have investigated the low temperature magnetotransport of the T3 lattice
realized in the GaAlAs/GaAs system. Using an additional electrostatic gate, we
have studied the influence of the channel number on the oscillations amplitude.
Finally, the role of the disorder on the strength of the localization is

Entrances and exits: changing perceptions of primary teaching as a career for men

DOI: 10.1080/03004430802352087The number of men in teaching has always been small, particularly in early childhood, but those that do come into teaching usually do so for the same reasons as women, namely enjoyment of working with children, of wanting to teach and wanting to make a difference to children's lives. However, in two separate studies, the authors have shown that on beginning teacher training in 1998, and at the point of leaving the profession in 2005, men and women tend to emphasise different concerns. This article will explore those differences and seek possible explanations for how men's views of teaching might be changing over time.Peer reviewe
