DO LARGE EMPLOYERS PAY MORE? THE CASE OF FIVE DEVELOPING AFRICAN COUNTRIES

    Get PDF
Using comparable data sets for five African countries, we evaluate possible explanations for the employer-size wage effect across these countries. Our results indicate that, apart from observable worker characteristics, most theories cannot explain very much of the wage premium received in larger firms. Moreover, we find that the employer-size wage effect does not differ greatly across the five African countries. As is the case with other developing nations, however, the effect is larger than that found in the industrialised world, though unlike the industrialised world it is larger for white collar workers than for blue collar workers. Data for one of the African countries, in conjunction with other evidence, suggest that this may in part be the result of skill-biased technology having a greater effect on the firm¡¯s size-wage distribution across skill groups in developing countries.Employer Size Wage Effect, Firm Size Wage Premium

“Uno es Palestino por el orgullo” Palestinian Assimilation and Identity in Nicaragua.

Palestinians have been immigrating to Nicaragua and throughout Central America since the early 20th-century, and they have formed their own small community in Managua. The first generation of immigrants from Palestine arrived without any support from the Nicaraguan government, and had to rely on the community for survival. However, the second generation has been brought up in a different Nicaragua than their parents faced and now encounters a new set of challenges in preserving their identity and becoming part of mainstream Nicaraguan society. This paper seeks to investigate the outcomes of assimilation of the second generation of Palestinian-Nicaraguans. In addition, it attempts to identify and assess what resources the first and second generations can draw upon in their search for identity in Nicaraguan society

posterExploratory analysis has focused on developing summarized views of monitor-captured perinatal data to support adherence to established clinical protocols. In addition to facilitating rapid access to significant clinical trends and reducing subjective interpretation of monitor-captured data, combining data summaries with traditional monitor review may assist in the anticipation of complications

Paper Session II-B - Future Sustainable H2 Infrastructure

The researchers hypothesized that it is possible to efficiently use an alternative ener61Y source, rather than the combustion of hydrocarbons. The researchers found that the most efficient, abundant, environmentally friendly, reusable energy sources is Hydrogen. One of the most efficient methods of utilizing hydrogen was through the use of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells. After thorough research into Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells, or PEMFC\u27s, the researchers constructed a working prototype of the fuel cell using easily obtainable materials. Many previous designs were studied and discussed. Newer designs were created to compensate for the use of easily obtainable materials. After a series of testing and redesigning, a high efficiency rating was achieved. The research supported the hypothesis made by the researchers and exceeded many of their expectations, despite the simple construction methods
