    A Problem of Particulate Contamination in an Automated Assembly Machine Successfully Solved by CFD and Simple Experiments

    Assembly of hard disk drives (HDDs) needs to be done in an automated assembly machine (AAM) virtually free of particulate contamination that can cause them to malfunction. Fan filter units (FFUs) are installed above the AAM to reduce the number of suspended particles in the recirculating air flowing over and around them. At one time, several HDDs were found to be defective. To find out the root cause of this problem, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to investigate the airflow over and around the AAM. It was found that the cause of the high particle counts was improper air speed from the FFUs. The optimal FFUs air speed needed to be in the range of 0.35–0.65 m/s in which the airflow would block out nearby airborne particles and purge away particles generated by the AAM effectively which would, in effect, reduce the particle counts down below the threshold level of class 100 clean room. A few available measurement tools at the factory were then used to perform validating measurements against the simulation results, and the validation was positive. This optimal speed range was implemented at the factory after which the level of contamination was reduced to an acceptable level

    Uncertainty analysis in ecological risk assessment modeling

    A probabilistic approach employing Monte Carlo simulations for assessing parameter and risks as probabilistic distributions was used in an ecological risk assessment (ERA) model to characterize risk and address uncertainty. This study addresses the following sources of uncertainty: parameter inputs in the ERA models, risk algorithms and uncertain input concentrations. To achieve this objective, both sensitivity and uncertainty analyses are being conducted. Monte Carlo simulations were used for generating probabilistic distributions of parameter and model uncertainty. All sensitivity, uncertainty, and variability analyses were coded in Visual Basic as part of the ERA model software version 2001, which was developed under the Sustainable Green Manufacturing (SGM) program. This simulation tool includes a Window\u27s based interface, an interactive and modifiable database management system (DBMS) that addresses the food web at trophic levels, and a comprehensive evaluation of exposure pathways. To verify this model, ecological risks from Cr, Ta, Mo and DU exposure at the U.S. Army Yuma Proving Ground (YPG) and Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG) were assessed and characterized. For the case of DU exposure to YPG terrestrial plants, the overall distributions for DU uptake for plants suggest 90% likelihood in reduction in root weight. For most terrestrial animals at YPG, the dose is less than that resulting in a decrease in offspring. At APG, DU exposure potentially poses little risk for terrestrial animals, which is no observable impact on receptor\u27s reproduction or development. DU potentially poses lower risks to aquatic species at APG as well. The overall risk posed by the metals followed the order of Mo\u3eCr\u3eTa for both YPG and APG sits. Blacktailed-jackrabbits, lesser long-nosed bats, mule deer and cactus mice, at YPG site, are expected to have a reduction in size and weight of offspring. Terrestrial plants are likely to exhibit a reduction in root weight. For APG site, the vulnerable receptors are white-footed mice, white-tailed deer, and cottontail rabbits. For terrestrial plants, the risk result suggests a reduction in root weight. Aquatic species did not show any observable risk from Mo, Cr, and Ta in the terms of survival, growth and mortality

    E-service portal for freelance community: case study in photography business

    This study revealed the limitations of freelancers’ inability to perform portfolios and biographies, their performance ratings to a large community of customers. The difficulties were evident in searching for reliable, qualified and experienced freelancers from multi-channel information sources. These limitations might impact the ability of freelancers selected by customers to perform the required task to the customers’ satisfaction. This research focused on the case study of the freelance community for photography business in southern of Thailand. This aims to establish an online facility in which freelance photographers can publicize their services and performance to potential customers. The concepts entailed in web portals and e-services were the key elements in the development and ensured that its functions worked efficiently. The study employed qualitative methods were used to assess the current practices of web portal and thus determining the requirements for the e-service web portal for freelance community. The practical contribution is that it can aid the effective design and implementation of an e-service web portal for the freelance community of photography business, and it is a massive step towards promoting the freelance community in Thailand

    Implementation of a personalized food recommendation system based on collaborative filtering and knapsack method

    Food recommendation system is one of the most interesting recommendation problems since it provides data for decision-making to users on selection of foods that meets individual preference of each user. Personalized recommender system has been used to recommend foods or menus to respond to requirements and restrictions of each user in a better way. This research study aimed to develop a personalized healthy food recommendation system based on collaborative filtering and knapsack method. Assessment results found that users were satisfied with the personalized healthy food recommendation system based on collaborative filtering and knapsack problem algorithm which included ability of operating system, screen design, and efficiency of operating system. The average satisfaction score overall was 4.20 implying that users had an excellent level of satisfaction

    How academic majors in non-STEM affect digital literacy: the empirical study

    Digital literacy is important capacity for students’ learning in the world of rapid changes in technology. This article aimed to study digital literacy among non-STEM undergraduate students. The study covered the component of 4 skills, i.e., operation skills, thinking skills, collaborative skills, and awareness skills. The hypothesis set in the study was academic major in non-STEM has different digital literacy. When each component was separately studied, digital literacy among non-STEM students should be different as well. The participants in the study were 378 non-STEM undergraduate students of Prince of Songkla University, Surat Thani Campus. The research instrument was digital literacy measurement. Inferential statistics were used in the data analysis to compare two independent groups. The results support hypotheses that the sample in non-STEM undergraduate students with different academic majors had different levels of digital literacy. Students major in a language had higher mean scores than students major in management. When each component was separately studied, students with different academic majors had different levels of digital literacy in each component. Students major in language had higher mean scores than students major in management in all components. This article mentioned an important point about digital literacy of non-STEM undergraduate students so as to be a guideline for stakeholders to determine strategies, set policies and make plans to develop digital skills among non-STEM students, which is highly important to students in the era of rapid changing technology

    COVID-19 was declared by WHO as a pandemic since March 2020. The vaccination program has been implemented worldwide. Specific antiviral drugs such as remdesivir, molnupiravir and ritonavir-based nirmatrelvir were effective against SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, the new SARS-CoV-2 variants have been elevated due to viral mutation causing vaccine resistance and rapid spreading. Long-term COVID-19 complications have been life-threatening in some recovery cases. To overcome viral adaptation, cell culture model is essential to comprehend SARS-CoV-2 infection, pathophysiology, complications, and drug target alterations. The classical 2D culture cell was frequency used for viral propagation and high-throughput screening. Modern 3D culture has recapitulated key cellular and molecular events of tissue physiology.
