    Aggregates of two-dimensional vesicles: Rouleaux and sheets

    Using both numerical and variational minimization of the bending and adhesion energy of two-dimensional lipid vesicles, we study their aggregation, and we find that the stable aggregates include an infinite number of vesicles and that they arrange either in a columnar or in a sheet-like structure. We calculate the stability diagram and we discuss the modes of transformation between the two types of aggregates, showing that they include disintegration as well as intercalation.Comment: 4 figure

    In this dissertation an attempt has "been made to distinguish between results "based on a relativistic combination of spin and SU(3) internal symmetry and one of spin and U(2) internal symmetry, An attempt has also been made to allow spin-dependent modifications to these theories so that the results are less vague in that the correct masses of particles appear in the theories. To facilitate understanding of this subject the early part of the thesis is devoted to some aspects of group theory required in later sections. As a further introductory consideration we consider the internal group SU(3) and its non-relativistic combination with spin SU(6)

    Construction and Software Design for a Microcomputer Controlled pH/Ion Titrator

    The construction of an automated titration device is described. The major components include an Apple II+ Microcomputer and 8-bit parallel interface. Fisher Accumet, Model 520 Digital pH/lon Meter, Gilmont Micrometer Buret of 2.5 mL capacity, Sigma stepper motor, power supply and driver to operate the buret, and a constant temperature bath of ± 0.005 °C stability. The limitations of the system are 0.001 pH/0.1 mv for the pH/ion sensing system, and 0.125 μL per step for the buret. The system as described is designed to determine equilibrium constants for metal ion-amino acid complexes. By changing the software a variety of different pH and redox titration experiments may be performed. A computer program used to operate the stepper motor driven syringe buret and record the pH from a digital pH meter is described. The program uses both Apple BASIC and assembly language. This is a closed loop operation in which the data from the pH meter is used to control the amount of reagent delivered by the buret. The results are displayed graphically as the titration proceeds. The variance of the pH readings are calculated using an assembly language subroutine and the calculations are done with zero round-off error

    Using live animals in the elementary science classroom fosters enthusiasm and encourages curiosity. The earthworms discussed in this article, commonly called night crawlers, are easy to find in Iowa in moist garden soil or around lawns. Earthworms are often used as fishing bait and, because of this, are readily available at reasonable prices from commercial bait dealers or backyard entrepreneurs. Besides their availability and low cost, earthworms are relatively hardy and easily handled by elementary students. For these reasons, and because of the very important role earthworms play in the environment, they were selected to be the focus of the academic activities for one day in first and second grade classrooms. These activities have been used successfully for the past four years

    Lower Bound on Entanglement of Formation for the Qubit-Qudit System

    Wootters [PRL 80, 2245 (1998)] has derived a closed formula for the entanglement of formation (EOF) of an arbitrary mixed state in a system of two qubits. There is no known closed form expression for the EOF of an arbitrary mixed state in any system more complicated than two qubits. This paper, via a relatively straightforward generalization of Wootters' original derivation, obtains a closed form lower bound on the EOF of an arbitary mixed state of a system composed of a qubit and a qudit (a d-level quantum system, with d greater than or equal to 3). The derivation of the lower bound is detailed for a system composed of a qubit and a qutrit (d = 3); the generalization to d greater than 3 then follows readily.Comment: 14 pages, 0 Figures, 0 Table

    The properties of tectonic earthquake sources are compared with those deduced here for fault planes in solid neutron-star matter.     Candidate polyphosphazene polymers were investigated to develop a fire-resistant, thermally stable and flexible open cell foam. The copolymers were prepared in several mole ratios of the substituent side chains and a (nominal) 40:60 derivative was selected for formulation studies. Synthesis of the polymers involved solution by polymerization of hexachlorophosphazene to soluble high molecular weight poly(dichlorophosphazene), followed by derivatization of the resultant polymer in a normal fashion to give polymers in high yield and high molecular weight. Small amounts of a cure site were incorporated into the polymer for vulcanization purposes. The poly(aryloxyphosphazenes) exhibited good thermal stability and the first polymer mentioned above exhibited the best thermal behavior of all the candidate polymers studied

    BVRI Observations of the Optical Afterglow of GRB 990510

    We present BVRIBVRI observations of the optical counterpart to the Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) 990510 obtained with the Las Campanas 1.0-m telescope between 15 and 48 hours after the burst. The temporal analysis of the data indicates steepening decay, independent of wavelength, approaching asymptotically t−0.76±0.01t^{-0.76\pm 0.01} at early times (t≪1day)t\ll 1 day) and t−2.40±0.02t^{-2.40\pm 0.02} at late times, with the break time at t0=1.57±0.03dayst_0=1.57\pm 0.03 days. GRB 990510 is the most rapidly fading of the well-documented GRB afterglows. It is also the first observed example of broad-band break for a GRB optical counterpart. The optical spectral energy distribution, corrected for significant Galactic reddening, is well fitted by a single power-law with ν−0.61±0.12\nu^{-0.61\pm 0.12}. However, when the BB-band point is dropped from the fit, the power-law becomes ν−0.46±0.08\nu^{-0.46\pm 0.08}, indicating a possible deviation from the power-law in the spectrum, either intrinsic or due to additional extinction near the source or from an intervening galaxy at z=1.62z=1.62.
