    Crime in Public Housing: Clarifying Research Issues

    In recent years, crime and public housing have been closely linked in our political and popular cultures. Tragic episodes of violence have reinforced the notion that public housing is a milieu with rates of victimization and offending far greater than other locales. However, these recent developments belie the complex social and political evolution of public housing from its origins in the 1930s, through urban renewal, and into the present. Stereotypes abound about public housing, its management, residents, and crime rates. In reality, variation is the norm, and it is these variations that affect crime. The study of crime in public housing is in its earliest phase, and there is much to learn. A few studies suggest that crime rates are higher in public housing complexes than in their immediate surroundings; other studies suggest quite the opposite. Still others suggest a process of diffusion and exchange of violent crimes between public housing and the surrounding neighborhood contexts

    Cracking in hydrogen ion-implanted Si/Si0.8Ge0.2/Si heterostructures

    We demonstrate that a controllable cracking can be realized in Si with a buried strain layer when hydrogen is introduced using traditional H-ion implantation techniques. However, H stimulated cracking is dependent on H projected ranges; cracking occurs along a Si0.8Ge0.2 strain layer only if the H projected range is shallower than the depth of the strained layer. The absence of cracking for H ranges deeper than the strain layer is attributed to ion-irradiation induced strain relaxation, which is confirmed by Rutherford-backscattering-spectrometry channeling angular scans. The study reveals the importance of strain in initializing continuous cracking with extremely low H concentrations

    The natural resources of Humboldt Bay

    In spite of its past abuses by man, Humboldt Bay is one of the few coastal estuaries remaining in California that has not been rendered largely unsuitable for wildlife by commercial development, dredging, filling or pollution. Its importance is emphasized considering that about 65 percent of the State's original estuarine tidelands have already been destroyed. The people have demonstrated their concern for our dwindling natural resources. If we are to preserve what remains it will be necessary for the people to exercise the wisest possible use of these resources. Because of the importance of coastal wetlands to the fish and wildlife of California, the Department of Fish and Game has initiated a high priority statewide inventory of these wetlands. This publication is an integral part of that program. It is intended as a guide for citizens, planners, administrators and all others interested in the use and development of coastal lands and waters. The Department has been charged with the responsibility of protecting and maintaining the fish and wildlife resources of the State. This publication is directed towards meeting this responsibility by outlining the specific resources and recreational aspects of Humboldt Bay, elucidating problems, and recommending courses of action for future development. Preservation of the Humboldt Bay resources is much more than a local issue. What is done or not done here can have statewide, national and international implications. It also must be recognized that there is an obligation to future generations. Decisions made today will affect all those who follow in our footsteps. (200pp.

    Early results of the extracardiac conduit Fontan operation

    AbstractBackground: Among the modifications of the Fontan operation, the extracardiac approach may offer the greatest potential for optimizing early postoperative ventricular and pulmonary vascular function, insofar as it can be performed with short periods of normothermic partial cardiopulmonary bypass and without cardioplegic arrest in most cases. In this study, we reviewed our experience with the extracardiac conduit Fontan operation, with a focus on early postoperative outcomes. Methods and results: Between July 1992 and April 1997, 51 patients (median age 4.9 years) underwent an extracardiac conduit Fontan operation. Median cardiopulmonary bypass time was 92 minutes and has decreased significantly over the course of our experience. Intracardiac procedures were performed in only 5 patients (10%), and the aorta was crossclamped in only 11 (22%). Intraoperative fenestration was performed in 24 patients (47%). There were no early deaths. Fontan failure occurred in 1 patient who was a poor candidate for the Fontan procedure. Transient supraventricular tachyarrhythmias occurred in 5 patients (10%). Median duration of chest tube drainage was 8 days. Factors significantly associated with prolonged resource use (mechanical ventilation, inotropic support, intensive care unit stay, and hospital stay) included longer bypass time and higher Fontan pressure. At a median follow-up of 1.9 years, there was 1 death from bleeding at reoperation. Conclusions: The extracardiac conduit Fontan procedure can be performed with minimal mortality and morbidity. Improved results may be related to advantages of the extracardiac approach and improved preservation of ventricular and pulmonary vascular function. (J Thorac Cardiovasc Surg 1999;117:688-96

    Jedi public health: Co-creating an identity-safe culture to promote health equity

The extent to which socially-assigned and culturally mediated social identity affects health depends on contingencies of social identity that vary across and within populations in day-to-day life. These contingencies are structurally rooted and health damaging inasmuch as they activate physiological stress responses. They also have adverse effects on cognition and emotion, undermining self-confidence and diminishing academic performance. This impact reduces opportunities for social mobility, while ensuring those who "beat the odds" pay a physical price for their positive efforts. Recent applications of social identity theory toward closing racial, ethnic, and gender academic achievement gaps through changing features of educational settings, rather than individual students, have proved fruitful. We sought to integrate this evidence with growing social epidemiological evidence that structurally-rooted biopsychosocial processes have population health effects. We explicate an emergent framework, Jedi Public Health (JPH). JPH focuses on changing features of settings in everyday life, rather than individuals, to promote population health equity, a high priority, yet, elusive national public health objective. We call for an expansion and, in some ways, a re-orienting of efforts to eliminate population health inequity.     Improving the Health Benefits of Snap Bean: Genome-Wide Association Studies of Total Phenolic Content

    Snap beans are a significant source of micronutrients in the human diet. Among the micronutrients present in snap beans are phenolic compounds with known beneficial effects on human health, potentially via their metabolism by the gut-associated microbiome. The genetic pathways leading to the production of phenolics in snap bean pods remain uncertain. In this study, we quantified the level of total phenolic content (TPC) in the Bean Coordinated Agriculture Program (CAP) snap bean diversity panel of 149 accessions. The panel was characterized spectrophotometrically for phenolic content with a Folin-Ciocalteu colorimetric assay. Flower, seed and pod color were also quantified, as red, purple, yellow and brown colors are associated with anthocyanins and flavonols in common bean. Genotyping was performed through an Illumina Infinium Genechip BARCBEAN6K_3 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array. Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) analysis identified 11 quantitative trait nucleotides (QTN) associated with TPC. An SNP was identified for TPC on Pv07 located near the P gene, which is a major switch in the flavonoid biosynthetic pathway. Candidate genes were identified for seven of the 11 TPC QTN. Five regulatory genes were identified and represent novel sources of variation for exploitation in developing snap beans with higher phenolic levels for greater health benefits to the consumer
