Regular particle acceleration in relativistic jets
Exact solution is obtained for electromagnetic field around a conducting
cylinder of infinite length and finite radius, with a periodical axial current,
when the wave length is much larger than the radius of the cylinder. The
solution describes simultaneously the fields in the near zone close to the
cylinder, and transition to the wave zone. Proper long-wave oscillations of
such cylinder are studied. The electromagnetic energy flux from the cylinder is
calculated. These solutions could be applied for description of the
electromagnetic field around relativistic jets from active galactic nuclei and

<i>Vibrio neptunius</i> sp. nov., <i>Vibrio brasiliensis</i> sp. nov. and <i>Vibrio xuii</i> sp. nov., isolated from the marine aquaculture environment (bivalves, fish, rotifers and shrimps)
The fluorescent amplified fragment length polymorphism (FAFLP) groups A5 (21 isolates), A8 (6 isolates) and A23 (3 isolates) distinguished in an earlier paper (Thompson et al., Syst Appl Microbiol 24, 520-538, 2001) were examined in more depth. These three groups were phylogenetically related to Vibrio tubiashii, but DNA-DNA hybridization experiments proved that the three AFLP groups are in fact novel species. Chemotaxonomic and phenotypic analyses further revealed several differences among the 30 isolates and known Vibrio species. It is proposed to accommodate these isolates in three novel species, namely Vibrio neptunius (type strain LMG 20536T; EMBL accession no. AJ316171; G + C content of the type strain 46·0 mol%), Vibrio brasiliensis (type strain LMG 20546T; EMBL accession no. AJ316172; G + C content of the type strain 45·9 mol%) and Vibrio xuii (type strain LMG 21346T; EMBL accession no. AJ316181; G + C content of the type strain 46·6 mol%). These species can be differentiated on the basis of phenotypic features, including fatty acid composition (particularly 14 : 0 iso, 14 : 0 iso 3-OH, 16 : 0 iso, 16 : 0, 17 : 0 and 17 : 1?8c), enzyme activities and utilization and fermentation of various carbon sources
TeV-scale bileptons, see-saw type II and lepton flavor violation in core-collapse supernova
Electrons and electron neutrinos in the inner core of the core-collapse
supernova are highly degenerate and therefore numerous during a few seconds of
explosion. In contrast, leptons of other flavors are non-degenerate and
therefore relatively scarce. This is due to lepton flavor conservation. If this
conservation law is broken by some non-standard interactions, electron
neutrinos are converted to muon and tau-neutrinos, and electrons - to muons.
This affects the supernova dynamics and the supernova neutrino signal. We
consider lepton flavor violating interactions mediated by scalar bileptons,
i.e. heavy scalars with lepton number 2. It is shown that in case of TeV-mass
bileptons the electron fermi gas is equilibrated with non-electron species
inside the inner supernova core at a time-scale of order of (1-100) ms. In
particular, a scalar triplet which generates neutrino masses through the
see-saw type II mechanism is considered. It is found that supernova core is
sensitive to yet unprobed values of masses and couplings of the triplet.Comment: accepted to Eur.Phys.J.
Adsorption-desorption kinetics in nanoscopically confined oligomer films under shear
The method of molecular dynamics computer simulations is employed to study oligomer melts confined in ultra-thin films and subjected to shear. The focus is on the self-diffusion of oligomers near attractive surfaces and on their desorption, together with the effects of increasing energy of adsorption and shear. It is found that the mobility of the oligomers near an attractive surface is strongly decreased. Moreover, although shearing the system forces the chains to stretch parallel to the surfaces and thus increase the energy of adsorption per chain, flow also promotes desorption. The study of chain desorption kinetics reveals the molecular processes responsible for the enhancement of desorption under shear. They involve sequences of conformations starting with a desorbed tail and proceeding in a very fast, correlated, segment-by-segment manner to the desorption of the oligomers from the surfaces.
Cooperative fluorescence effects for dipole-dipole interacting systems with experimentally relevant level configurations
The mutual dipole-dipole interaction of atoms in a trap can affect their
fluorescence. Extremely large effects were reported for double jumps between
different intensity periods in experiments with two and three Ba^+ ions for
distances in the range of about ten wave lengths of the strong transition while
no effects were observed for Hg^+ at 15 wave lengths. In this theoretical paper
we study this question for configurations with three and four levels which
model those of Hg^+ and Ba^+, respectively. For two systems in the Hg^+
configuration we find cooperative effects of up to 30% for distances around one
or two wave lengths, about 5% around ten wave lengths, and, for larger
distances in agreement with experiments, practically none. This is similar for
two V systems. However, for two four-level configurations, which model two Ba^+
ions, cooperative effects are practically absent, and this latter result is at
odds with the experimental findings for Ba^+.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, RevTeX4, to be published in Phys. Rev.
Hypoxia modulates platelet purinergic signalling pathways.
BACKGROUND: Hypoxia resulting from ascent to high-altitude or pathological states at sea level is known to increase platelet reactivity. Previous work from our group has suggested that this may be adenosine diphosphate (ADP)-specific. Given the clinical importance of drugs targeting ADP pathways, research into the impact of hypoxia on platelet ADP pathways is highly important.
METHODS: Optimul aggregometry was performed on plasma from 29 lowland residents ascending to 4,700 m, allowing systematic assessment of platelet reactivity in response to several platelet agonists. Aggregometry was also performed in response to ADP in the presence of inhibitors of the two main ADP receptors, P2Y1 and P2Y12 (MRS2500 and cangrelor, respectively). Phosphorylation of vasodilator-stimulated phosphoprotein (VASP), a key determinant of platelet aggregation, was analysed using the VASPFix assay.
RESULTS: Hypobaric hypoxia significantly reduced the ability of a fixed concentration of cangrelor to inhibit ADP-induced aggregation and increased basal VASP phosphorylation. However, in the absence of P2Y receptor inhibitors, we did not find evidence of increased platelet sensitivity to any of the agonists tested and found reduced sensitivity to thrombin receptor-activating peptide-6 amide.
CONCLUSION: Our results provide evidence of increased P2Y1 receptor activity at high altitude and suggest down-regulation of the P2Y12 pathway through increased VASP phosphorylation. These changes in ADP pathway activity are of potential therapeutic significance to high-altitude sojourners and hypoxic sea level patients prescribed platelet inhibitors and warrant further investigation
Excited B mesons from the lattice
We determine the energies of the excited states of a heavy-light meson
, with a static heavy quark and light quark with mass approximately
that of the strange quark from both quenched lattices and with dynamical
fermions. We are able to explore the energies of orbital excitations up to L=3,
the spin-orbit splitting up to L=2 and the first radial excitation. These mesons will be very narrow if their mass is less than 5775 MeV -- the
threshold. We investigate this in detail and present evidence that the
scalar meson (L=1) will be very narrow and that as many as 6
excited states will have energies close to the threshold and should also
be relatively narrow.Comment: 17 pages, 6 ps figure
Improved Determination of the Mass of the Light Hybrid Meson From QCD Sum Rules
We calculate the next-to-leading order (NLO) -corrections to the
contributions of the condensates and in the
current-current correlator of the hybrid current
g\barq(x)\gamma_{\nu}iF_{\mu\nu}^aT^aq(x) using the external field method in
Feynman gauge. After incorporating these NLO contributions into the Laplace
sum-rules, the mass of the = light hybrid meson is recalculated
using the QCD sum rule approach. We find that the sum rules exhibit enhanced
stability when the NLO -corrections are included in the sum rule
analysis, resulting in a light hybrid meson mass of approximately 1.6

A qualitative analysis of Medicaid beneficiaries perceptions of prenatal and immediate postpartum contraception counseling
Objectives: In the United States, about four out of every ten births are financed by Medicaid, making it a program that is key in addressing racial disparities in maternal health. Many women covered by Medicaid have access to prenatal and immediate postpartum contraception counseling that can aid them in their postpartum contraception decision-making. However, existing inequities within Medicaid and a history of reproductive harms targeting Black women and women with low incomes may contribute to women with Medicaid having different experiences of contraception counseling. This qualitative study explores how Black women and White women insured by Medicaid perceive prenatal and immediate postpartum contraception counseling and identifies additional factors that shape their contraception decision-making. Methods: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 15 Medicaid beneficiaries who delivered at a public teaching hospital in North Carolina. Interviews focused on women?s beliefs about planning for pregnancy, experiences with prenatal and immediate postpartum contraception counseling, and perceived need for postpartum contraception. We used a priori and emergent codes to analyze interviews. Results: Seven Black women and eight White women completed interviews 14-60 days postpartum. All women reported receiving prenatal and immediate postpartum counseling. Several women described receiving prenatal counseling, reflective of patient-centered contraception counseling, that helped in their postpartum contraception decision-making; one woman described receiving immediate postpartum counseling that helped in her decision-making. Some Black women reported receiving unsupportive/coercive contraception counseling. In addition to contraception counseling, past reproductive health experiences and future pregnancy intentions were salient to women's contraception decision-making.Conclusions:Prenatal and immediate postpartum contraception counseling can help some Medicaid beneficiaries with their postpartum contraception decision, but past reproductive health experiences and future pregnancy intentions are also relevant. Counseling that does not consider these experiences may be harmful, particularly to Black women, further contributing to racial disparities in maternal postpartum health outcomes
Lattice calculation of hybrid mesons with improved Kogut-Susskind fermions
We report on a lattice determination of the mass of the exotic
hybrid meson using an improved Kogut-Susskind action. Results from both
quenched and dynamical quark simulations are presented. We also compare with
earlier results using Wilson quarks at heavier quark masses. The results on
lattices with three flavors of dynamical quarks show effects of sea quarks on
the hybrid propagators which probably result from coupling to two meson states.
We extrapolate the quenched results to the physical light quark mass to allow
comparison with experimental candidates for the hybrid meson. The
lattice result remains somewhat heavier than the experimental result, although
