Kepler Archive Manual
A description of Kepler, its design, performance and operational constraints may be found in the Kepler Instrument Handbook (KIH, Van Cleve Caldwell 2016). A description of Kepler calibration and data processing is described in the Kepler Data Processing Handbook (KDPH, Jenkins et al. 2016; Fanelli et al. 2011). Science users should also consult the special ApJ Letters devoted to early Kepler results and mission design (April 2010, ApJL, Vol. 713 L79-L207). Additional technical details regarding the data processing and data qualities can be found in the Kepler Data Characteristics Handbook (KDCH, Christiansen et al. 2013) and the Data Release Notes (DRN). This archive manual specifically documents the file formats, as they exist for the last data release of Kepler, Data Release 25(KSCI-19065-002). The earlier versions of the archive manual and data release notes act as documentation for the earlier versions of the data files
Elementary forms and their dynamics: revisiting Mary Douglas
Mary Douglas's oeuvre furnishes the social sciences with one of the most profound and ambitious bodies of social theory ever to emerge from within anthropology. This article uses the occasion of the publication of Fardon's two volumes of her previously uncollected papers to restate her core arguments about the limited plurality of elementary forms of social organisation, about the institutional dynamics of conflict, and about conflict attenuation. In reviewing these two volumes, the article considers what those anthropologists who have been sceptical either of Douglas's importance or of the Durkheimian traditions generally, will want from these books to convince them to look afresh at her work. It concludes that the two collections will provide open-minded anthropologists with enough evidence of the creativity and significance of her achievement to encourage them to reopen her major theoretical works. An internal critique of some aspects of Douglas's handling of her arguments is offered, before the conclusion identifies the wider significance of her arguments for the social science
BA11 FKBP5 expression levels correlate with dendritic spine density in postmortem PTSD and controls
AbstractGenetic variants of the immunophilin FKBP5 have been implicated in susceptibility to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other stress-related disorders. We examined the relationship between mushroom, stubby, thin and filopodial spine densities measured with Golgi staining and FKBP5 gene expression in the medial orbitofrontal cortex (BA11) in individuals diagnosed with PTSD and normal controls (n = 8/8). ANCOVA revealed PTSD cases had a significantly elevated density of stubby spines (29%, P < 0.037) and a trend for a reduction in mushroom spine density (25%, p < 0.082). Levels of FKBP5 mRNA were marginally elevated in the PTSD cases (z = 1.94, p = 0.053) and levels correlated inversely with mushroom (Spearman's rho = −0.83, p < 0.001) and overall spine density (rho = −0.75, p < 0.002) and directly with stubby spine density (rho = 0.55, p < 0.027). These data suggest that FKBP5 may participate in a cellular pathway modulating neuronal spine density changes in the brain, and that this pathway may be dysregulated in PTSD
Medical Biochemistry Without Rote Memorization: Multi-Institution Implementation And Student Perceptions Of A Nationally Standardized Metabolic Map For Learning And Assessment
Despite the growing number of patients worldwide with metabolism-related chronic diseases, medical biochemistry education is commonly perceived as focusing on recall of facts irrelevant for patient care. The authors suggest that this focus on rote memorization of pathways creates excessive cognitive load that may interfere with learners’ development of an integrated understanding of metabolic regulation and dysregulation. This cognitive load can be minimized by providing appropriate references during learning and assessment. Biochemistry educators collaborated to develop a medically relevant Pathways of Human Metabolism map (MetMap) that is now being used at many medical schools as a nationally standardized resource during learning and assessments. To assess impact, students from three medical schools were surveyed about its benefits and disadvantages. Responses were obtained from 481 students (84%) and were examined using thematic analysis. Five main themes emerged as perceived benefits of using the MetMap: 1) aids visual and mental organization, 2) promotes deep learning and applied understanding, 3) decreases emphasis on memorization, 4) reduces anxiety on exams, and 5) aids recall. Perceived disadvantages were: 1) fear of under-preparation for licensing exams, 2) overwhelming nature of the map, and 3) reduced motivation for and time spent studying. Results affirm that students perceive use of the MetMap promotes focus on broader metabolic concepts and deep versus surface learning, supporting a shift in cognitive load toward desired goals. Although the long-term impact on learning needs to be further studied, the use of the MetMap represents a step toward open-reference exams that reflect “real world” practice
Does Type of Tumor Histology Impact Survival among Patients with Stage IIIB/IV Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Treated with First-Line Doublet Chemotherapy?
Chemotherapy regimens may have differential efficacy by histology in nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We examined the impact of histology on survival of patients (N = 2,644) with stage IIIB/IV NSCLC who received first-line cisplatin/carboplatin plus gemcitabine (C/C+G) and cisplatin/carboplatin plus a taxane (C/C+T) identified retrospectively in the SEER cancer registry (1997–2002). Patients with squamous and nonsquamous cell carcinoma survived 8.5 months and 8.1 months, respectively (P = .018). No statistically significant difference was observed in survival between C/C+G and C/C+T in both histologies. Adjusting for clinical and demographic characteristics, the effect of treatment regimen on survival did not differ by histology (P for interaction = .257). There was no statistically significant difference in hazard of death by histology in both groups. These results contrast the predictive role of histology and improved survival outcomes observed for cisplatin-pemetrexed regimens in advanced nonsquamous NSCLC
A "superstorm": When moral panic and new risk discourses converge in the media

This article opens the theoretical possibility that the two may co-exist and converge in the same scare. I do this by bringing together more recent developments in moral panic thesis, with new risk theory and the concept of media logic. I then apply this theoretical approach to an empirical analysis of how and with what consequences moral panic and new risk type discourses converged in the editorials of four newspaper campaigns against GM food policy in Britain in the late 1990s. The article analyses 112 editorials published between January 1998 and December 2000, supplemented with news stories where these were needed for contextual clarity. This analysis shows that not only did this novel food generate intense media and public reactions; these developed in the absence of the type of concrete details journalists usually look for in risk stories. Media logic is important in understanding how journalists were able to engage and hence how a major scare could be constructed around convergent moral panic and new risk type discourses. The result was a media ‘superstorm’ of sustained coverage in which both types of discourse converged in highly emotive mutually reinforcing ways that resonated in a highly sensitised context. The consequence was acute anxiety, social volatility and the potential for the disruption of policy and social change
Terrestrial Planet Occurrence Rates for the Kepler GK Dwarf Sample
We measure planet occurrence rates using the planet candidates discovered by
the Q1-Q16 Kepler pipeline search. This study examines planet occurrence rates
for the Kepler GK dwarf target sample for planet radii, 0.75<Rp<2.5 Rearth, and
orbital periods, 50<Porb<300 days, with an emphasis on a thorough exploration
and identification of the most important sources of systematic uncertainties.
Integrating over this parameter space, we measure an occurrence rate of F=0.77
planets per star, with an allowed range of 0.3<F<1.9. The allowed range takes
into account both statistical and systematic uncertainties, and values of F
beyond the allowed range are significantly in disagreement with our analysis.
We generally find higher planet occurrence rates and a steeper increase in
planet occurrence rates towards small planets than previous studies of the
Kepler GK dwarf sample. Through extrapolation, we find that the one year
orbital period terrestrial planet occurrence rate, zeta_1=0.1, with an allowed
range of 0.01<zeta_1<2, where zeta_1 is defined as the number of planets per
star within 20% of the Rp and Porb of Earth. For G dwarf hosts, the zeta_1
parameter space is a subset of the larger eta_earth parameter space, thus
zeta_1 places a lower limit on eta_earth for G dwarf hosts. From our analysis,
we identify the leading sources of systematics impacting Kepler occurrence rate
determinations as: reliability of the planet candidate sample, planet radii,

BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations in a population-based study of male breast cancer
Background: The contribution of BRCA1 and BRCA2 to the incidence of male breast cancer (MBC)
in the United Kingdom is not known, and the importance of these genes in the increased risk of female
breast cancer associated with a family history of breast cancer in a male first-degree relative is unclear.
Methods: We have carried out a population-based study of 94 MBC cases collected in the UK. We
screened genomic DNA for mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 and used family history data from these
cases to calculate the risk of breast cancer to female relatives of MBC cases. We also estimated the
contribution of BRCA1 and BRCA2 to this risk.
Results: Nineteen cases (20%) reported a first-degree relative with breast cancer, of whom seven also
had an affected second-degree relative. The breast cancer risk in female first-degree relatives was 2.4
times (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.4–4.0) the risk in the general population. No BRCA1 mutation
carriers were identified and five cases were found to carry a mutation in BRCA2. Allowing for a
mutation detection sensitivity frequency of 70%, the carrier frequency for BRCA2 mutations was 8%
(95% CI = 3–19). All the mutation carriers had a family history of breast, ovarian, prostate or
pancreatic cancer. However, BRCA2 accounted for only 15% of the excess familial risk of breast
cancer in female first-degree relatives.
Conclusion: These data suggest that other genes that confer an increased risk for both female and
male breast cancer have yet to be found
