    English Literacy Development for English Language Learners: Does Spanish Instruction Promote or Hinder?

    In this brief, the authors consider whether instruction in a child\u27s native language (particularly Spanish) hinders or promotes learning of literacy in English. The authors conduct a four-step process for identifying research on this topic, examining this literature, and then determining the answer to this clinical question. The results suggest that supporting a child\u27s home/native language promotes rather than hinders development of English literacy skills

    Perceptions of Pediatric Overweight and Weight Management: A Comparison of Parents and Physicians

    Pediatric overweight is of paramount importance in Kentucky, as studies show prevalence rates are higher in the state than the national average. Research suggests that comprehensive treatments involving diet training, exercise training, and psychological counseling are most effective at reducing overweight in children. Little research has been done, however, to compare parents\u27 and physicians\u27 perceptions of obesity, its treatment, or barriers to weight management. The purpose of this study is to examine differences in attitudes toward pediatric obesity and weight management among parents and physicians, specifically related to the importance of diet training, exercise training, and psychological counseling. Surveys were sent to a population of pediatricians and family practitioners serving pediatric patients in the ten-county Barren River Area Development District of south-central Kentucky and to a convenience sample of 160 parents, identified when they brought their child(ren) to a physician for an office visit. Data were analyzed 1) descriptively and 2) inferentially to test hypotheses. Frequencies and measures of central tendency were conducted on categorical and continuous data. A series of t-tests were conducted at a 95% confidence interval to determine if differences existed between parents and physicians concerning the importance of 1) diet training, 2) exercise training, or 3) psychological counseling to pediatric weight control. Results showed a 42.9% prevalence of overweight among the children of sampled parents. Results also showed that physicians rated the three treatment modalities under study as significantly more important than did parents. Additionally, parents and physicians identified different barriers to the successful treatment of child overweight. While physicians felt child and family adherence issues presented the largest barriers, parents cited cost and self-esteem concerns as larger barriers to pediatric weight management. This study has many public health implications, including potential benefits from awareness efforts and educational training related to the identification of child overweight and the importance of a comprehensive treatment strategy. Additionally, physicians who are aware of parents\u27 concerns related to finances and their child\u27s self-esteem might be able to tailor their educational efforts to address those concerns, thus increasing treatment adherence

    On the Concept of a Notational Variant

    In the study of modal and nonclassical logics, translations have frequently been employed as a way of measuring the inferential capabilities of a logic. It is sometimes claimed that two logics are “notational variants” if they are translationally equivalent. However, we will show that this cannot be quite right, since first-order logic and propositional logic are translationally equivalent. Others have claimed that for two logics to be notational variants, they must at least be compositionally intertranslatable. The definition of compositionality these accounts use, however, is too strong, as the standard translation from modal logic to first-order logic is not compositional in this sense. In light of this, we will explore a weaker version of this notion that we will call schematicity and show that there is no schematic translation either from first-order logic to propositional logic or from intuitionistic logic to classical logic

    Radial head fractures are the most common type of elbow fracture in adults. Unrecognised disruption of the intraosseous membrane at the time of injury can lead to severe wrist pain from proximal radial migration especially if the radial head is excised. In this case, despite anatomical reduction and internal fixation of the radial head fracture, longitudinal forearm instability developed after delayed radial head resection was performed 7 months post-injury. A Suave-Kapandji procedure was performed due to ongoing wrist pain. Because of the previous radial head resection, this led to a floating forearm that could only be solved by creating a one-bone forearm, sacrificing all forearm rotation to achieve a stable lever arm between the elbow and wrist joint

    Spite is typically considered a vicious emotion that causes us to engage in petty, vindictive, and sometimes self-destructive behavior. Even though it has this bad reputation, I will argue that spite is a reactive attitude. Spite is emotional defiance of another’s command: to spite you, I will do something exactly because you told me not to. Our liability to feelings of spite presupposes that we recognize others as having practical authority, which is why it qualifies as a reactive attitude. I conclude by offering conditions under which spite can be justified and unjustified

    It is common to think that we would be morally better people if we never felt envy. Recently, some philosophers have rejected this conclusion by arguing that envy can often be directed toward unfairness or inequality. As such, they conclude that we should not suppress our feelings of envy. I argue, however, that these defenses only show that envy is sometimes morally permissible. In order to show that we would not be better off without envy, we must show how envy is not merely morally permissible, but morally valuable. Here I provide a defense of envy\u27s moral value. I argue that feelings of envy are integral to the value that moral agents place on the goods and talents that they judge to be central to a worthwhile life

    One way of understanding Kant’s views about moral emotions is the cultivation view. On this view, emotions play a role in Kantian morality provided they are properly cultivated. I evince a sceptical position about the cultivation view. First, I show that the textual evidence in support of cultivation is ambiguous. I then provide an account of emotions in Kant’s theory that explains both his positive and negative views about them. Emotions capture our attention such that they both disrupt the mind’s composure and serve as a surrogate for reason. As such, Kant cannot recommend that we cultivate our emotions

    Above All Things Human: _Bestimmung_ in Salomo Friedlaender’s Kant for Children

    Kant’s commitment to universalism has been called into question since increasing attention has been paid to his work on race in the last 20 years. This worry can easily be applied to Kant’s work on education: when Kant describes education as allowing humanity to fulfill its Bestimmung (vocation), scholars might reasonably conclude that such a claim only applies certain racial groups. Yet Salomo Friedlaender claims that if Kant’s moral theory is taught to children, “Every person is valued according to her morality and no longer, as in our crude days, according to ‘race’ or national and religious affiliation.” This interpretation of Kant might strike some contemporary Kant scholars as naïvely optimistic, but neo-Kantians were well aware of Kant’s racial claims. By examining how neo-Kantians read Kant’s work on race, I argue that Friedlaender’s interpretation provides a way of reading an unracialized Bestimmung in the pedagog
