    A Monte Carlo study of the scaling of nucleation rates in a Lennard-Jones system

    Temperature scaling of the homogenous vapor-to-liquid nucleation rate, J, is examined in a model Lennard-Jones (LJ) system. The model uses the Bennett Metropolis Monte Carlo technique to determine small cluster growth/decay rate constant ratios ßn-1|αn at four temperatures (T = 40, 50, 60, and 83.6K) below the argon Lennard-Jones critical temperature, Tc. The ßn-1|αn for clusters ranging in size from n = 2 to n = 192 LJ particles are applied to a kinetic steady-state nucleation rate formalism and nucleation rates are determined at the same four temperatures. When these rates are plotted first in the standard way vs. lnS, (where S is the ratio of ambient to coexistence vapor pressure) and then vs. the scaled supersaturation, lnS / [Tc/T-1]3/2, the values of logJ are found to collapse onto a single line. This demonstrates that the nucleation rate is a function of lnS / [Tc/T-1]3/2 -- rather than of the independent variables, S and T. A similar scaling has been observed in the experimental nucleation rate data of water and toluene. The present study is the first simulation based demonstration of vapor to liquid nucleation rate temperature scaling in a model dilute vapor system and provides insight into the law of mass action model assumptions which give rise to the scaling

    The effect of alkalisation on the mechanical properties of natural fibres

    A study on the effect of alkalisaton using 3% NaOH solution was carried out on Flax, Kenaf, Abaca and Sisal to observe the impact that the common pre-treatment process has on fibre mechanical properties. The result of the investigation indicated that over-treatment of natural fibres using NaOH could have a negative effect on the base fibre properties. It is concluded that a treatment time of less than 10 minutes is sufficient to remove hemicelluloses and to give the optimum effect

    Recent European Parliament directive requires companies to achieve materials recycling greater than 80% in particular in the automotive sector [1]. The research on natural fibre based composite materials fits well into this ecological image. The advantages of natural fibres over synthetic materials include, low density, relative cheapness, availability and biodegradability. In this paper we explore the fabrication and mechanical testing of natural fibre composites and this is part of an on going study at Strathclyde University and describes the fabrication of composites using natural fibre and styrene polyester resin. The properties of the synthetic resin can be varied by changing the catalysts concentration and flexural (three point bending) and single-edged notched bending (SENB) properties are reported at different concentrations of the catalyst

    Vacuum infusion of natural fibre composites for structural applications

    Numerous methods of manufacturing natural fibre composites have been reported in the literature, including compression moudling, often in conjunction with a hot press. Other forms of composite manufacture include 'Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Moulding' (VATRM) and the 'Seemann Composite Resin Infusion Moulding Process' (SCRIMP). These methods have been reported to produce natural fibre composies with reasonable mechanical properties [1-2]. In this paper, a vacuum infusion rig is described that has been developed to produce consistent quality composite plates for studies into optimising natural fibre composites. The process aims to harness the benefits of vacuum infusion and compression moulding, where vacuum infusion encourages the removal of trapped air in the system and hence avoid reduction, and additional compression moulding can help to achieve high volume fractions that are otherwise difficult in other processes

    Channel Electron Multiplier and Channelplate Efficiencies for Detecting Positive Ions

    Absolute detection efficiencies for singly and multiply charged positive ions have been measured for a channelplate and for two different channel electron multipliers (CEM). The efficiencies were measured for impact energies between approximately 0.25 and 25 keV and for ion masses ranging from 14 to 132. The maximum efficiencies were found to be the same for all ions investigated and were approximately 58% for a channelplate and 89% for the CEMs. For a channelplate it is shown that the detection efficiencies for heavier ions scale to a single curve if plotted versus the impact energy divided by the square root of the ion mass. Data taken from the literature imply that lighter ions scale differently. Polynomial fitting parameters to the present efficiency curves are provided

    Temporal variability of disturbances: is this important for diversity and structure of marine fouling assemblages?

    Natural communities are constantly changing due to a variety of interacting external processes and the temporal occurrence and intensity of these processes can have important implications for the diversity and structure of marine sessile assemblages. In this study, we investigated the effects of temporal variation in a disturbance regime, as well as the specific timing of events within different regimes, on the composition and diversity of marine subtidal fouling assemblages. We did this in a multi-factorial experiment using artificial settlement tiles deployed at two sites on the North East coast of England. We found that although there were significant effects of disturbances on the composition of assemblages, there were no effects of either the variation in the disturbance regime or the specific timing of events on the diversity or assemblage composition at either site. In contrast to recent implications we conclude that in marine fouling assemblages, the variability in disturbance regimes (as a driving force) is unimportant, while disturbance itself is an important force for structuring robust ecosystems

    Re-structuring of marine communities exposed to environmental change

    Species richness is the most commonly used but controversial biodiversity metric in studies on aspects of community stability such as structural composition or productivity. The apparent ambiguity of theoretical and experimental findings may in part be due to experimental shortcomings and/or heterogeneity of scales and methods in earlier studies. This has led to an urgent call for improved and more realistic experiments. In a series of experiments replicated at a global scale we translocated several hundred marine hard bottom communities to new environments simulating a rapid but moderate environmental change. Subsequently, we measured their rate of compositional change (re-structuring) which in the great majority of cases represented a compositional convergence towards local communities. Re-structuring is driven by mortality of community components (original species) and establishment of new species in the changed environmental context. The rate of this re-structuring was then related to various system properties. We show that availability of free substratum relates negatively while taxon richness relates positively to structural persistence (i.e., no or slow re-structuring). Thus, when faced with environmental change, taxon-rich communities retain their original composition longer than taxon-poor communities. The effect of taxon richness, however, interacts with another aspect of diversity, functional richness. Indeed, taxon richness relates positively to persistence in functionally depauperate communities, but not in functionally diverse communities. The interaction between taxonomic and functional diversity with regard to the behaviour of communities exposed to environmental stress may help understand some of the seemingly contrasting findings of past research

    Development of patient-centric eating advice for complete denture wearers

    Background Edentulous people eat less healthily, and wearing dentures impairs eating function and enjoyment. Objective To apply a sequential approach to integrate scientific evidence, and patient and professional experience to co-develop intervention to support better eating with dentures. Methods Focus groups, two with purposive samples of patients and two with dental professionals, explored experiences and opinions about advice on eating with complete dentures. Findings were distilled with evidence from the literature to underpinned concepts for eating interventions. User engagement informed prioritisation of ideas and led to the development of a leaflet on eating with dentures. Results Patients receive no advice on what they can realistically expect when eating with dentures, and professionals lacked confidence to provide eating advice. Patients did not think dentists a credible provider of eating advice, feeling peer support more appropriate and offering numerous strategies for eating with dentures. Concepts for eating intervention included a patient leaflet, Web-based eating interventions, patient support blogs, waiting room videos and improved nutrition training for dental professionals. User feedback informed prioritisation of ideas, leading to the development of a leaflet on eating with dentures. Justified by the data, the leaflet focused on patient-generated tips for overcoming the functional limitations of eating with dentures, and unobtrusive healthier eating advice. Face validity with users confirmed acceptability. Conclusion A systematic and rigorous integration of scientific evidence, expert experience and patient input has developed a patient-centric, evidence-based approach to a patent leaflet on eating with dentures that, based on initial face validity, is likely to be well received
