    Political identities, vote choice, and participation: exploring the impact of expressive identities and competing issue positions

    2016 Fall.Includes bibliographical references.America's contemporary political structure has emphasized a single liberal-conservative ideological dimension. Yet, a substantial number of citizens do not neatly reflect this elite divide in their issue positions across both economic and social issues. These "dual ideologues" may feel unrepresented and alienated by a political system that does not offer many choices in candidates or parties that are consistent with their issue positions. However, it remains unclear whether dual ideologues identify with either of the two major parties or ideological groups in the United States based on non-ideological factors. An analysis of data from the 1980 to 2008 American National Election Study shows that although dual ideologues identify with political groups at similar rates to consistent ideologues, one group of dual ideologues – libertarians -- hold weaker connections to these political groups. The study further examines the importance of expressive versus instrumental identities in influencing whether dual ideologues vote consistently with their chosen party and participate in electoral activities at the same rates as more consistent ideologues. These findings add further support to the importance of political identities, but they also indicate that the effects of strong, consistent issue positions cannot be dismissed, as a strong identity alone cannot overcome the lack of representation for those with competing issue positions.     A Low-Noise Electrically Levitated Oscillator for Investigating Fundamental Physics

    This thesis describes the creation of a low-noise, electrodynamically levitated nanoparticle oscillator for applications in optomechanics and quantum physics. The harmonic motion of a nanoparticle trapped in a linear Paul trap was measured and characterized. Velocity damping and parametric feedback cooling methods were implemented to cool the centre-of-mass motion of an oscillator. Experiments were conducted on the same particle so that a direct comparison between both methods could be done. Theory and simulations were developed to fully understand these processes. It was shown that velocity damping achieves lower temperatures due to the greater backaction from measurement noise in the parametric feedback scheme. A minimum temperature of 26±626\pm6\,mK was reached in these experiments limited only by detection noise. Low-noise electronics, designed to prevent motional heating of the levitated nanoparticle due to fluctuations in the confining electric fields, were studied. At low pressures down to 3×10⁻⁷ mbar, where minimal thermal noise is present from gas collisions, no heating effect from voltage fluctuations was observed in two of the oscillator modes. This work demonstrated the utility of this trap for future low-noise experiments including investigations into wave function collapse with preliminary results presented here. The cooling and dynamics of two co-trapped nanoparticles strongly coupled by their mutual Coulomb repulsion was also studied. The normal modes in both the axial and radial motion of the trapped nanoparticle were measured and characterized. Sympathetic cooling and squeezing of one particle were achieved through interaction with the other trapped nanoparticle. Temperatures down to 200±10 mK and 190±40 mK were reached in the axial normal modes. Additionally, a measurement-based scheme was used to couple the axial normal modes which were shown to display the characteristics of strong coupling. Energy exchange between the two modes was demonstrated alongside sympathetic cooling of one mode through this coupling

    Mobilizing learning: mobile Web 2.0 scenarios in tertiary education

    Based upon three years of mobile learning (mlearning) projects, a major implementation project has been developed for integrating the use of mobile web 2.0 tools across a variety of departments and courses in a tertiary education environment. A participatory action research methodology guides and informs the project. The project is based upon an explicit social constuctivist pedagogy, focusing on student collaboration, and the sharing and critique of student-generated content using freely available web 2.0 services. These include blogs, social networks, location aware (geotagged) image and video sharing, instant messaging, microblogging etc
 Students and lecturers are provided with either an appropriate smartphone and/or a 3G capable netbook to use as their own for the duration of the project. Keys to the projects success are the level of pedagogical and technical support, and the level of integration of the tools into the courses – including assessment and lecturer modelling of the use of the tools. The projects are supported by an intentional community of practice model, with the researcher taking on the role of the “technology steward”. The paper outlines three different scenarios illustrating how this course integration is being achieved, establishing a transferable model of mobile web 2.0 integration and implementation.     How are teacher candidates conceptualizing self-care during the COVID 19 pandemic? We initiated focused attention on educator self-care for teacher candidates after identifying this content as a missing yet necessary component of trauma-informed teaching (Authors, 2019). In the fall of 2020, with the COVID-19 pandemic affecting every element of candidates’ lives including our now remotely-delivered course, we reconsidered how that content needed to fit into the realities of learning to teach during a pandemic. Following these revisions, we explored the research question, how are candidates conceptualizing self-care during the COVID-19 pandemic? We describe findings and provide recommendations and resources for educator preparation programs (EPP) to include self-care content during COVID -19 and afterward

    Emerging infectious diseasespose a significant threat to global health, but predicting disease outcomes for particular species can be complicated when pathogen virulence varies across space, time, or hosts. The pathogenic chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) has caused worldwide declines in frog populations. Not only do Bd isolates from wild populations vary in virulence, but virulence shifts can occur over short timescales when Bd is maintained in the laboratory. We leveraged changes in Bd virulence over multiple generations of passage to better understand mechanisms of pathogen virulence. We conducted whole-genome resequencing of two samples of the same Bd isolate, differing only in passage history, to identify genomic processes associated with virulence attenuation. The isolate with shorter passage history (and greater virulence) had greater chromosome copy numbers than the isolate maintained in culture for longer, suggesting that virulence attenuation may be associated with loss of chromosome copies. Our results suggest that genomic processes proposed as mechanisms for rapid evolution in Bd are correlated with virulence attenuation in laboratory culture within a single lineage of Bd. Moreover, these genomic processes can occur over extremely short timescales. On a practical level, our results underscore the importance of immediately cryo-archiving new Bd isolates and using fresh isolates, rather than samples cultured in the laboratory for long periods, for laboratory infection experiments. Finally, when attempting to predict disease outcomes for this ecologically important pathogen, it is critical to consider existing variation in virulence among isolates and the potential for shifts in virulence over short timescales

    Retrospective Inference as a Form of Bounded Rationality, and Its Beneficial Influence on Learning

    Probabilistic models of cognition typically assume that agents make inferences about current states by combining new sensory information with fixed beliefs about the past, an approach known as Bayesian filtering. This is computationally parsimonious, but, in general, leads to suboptimal beliefs about past states, since it ignores the fact that new observations typically contain information about the past as well as the present. This is disadvantageous both because knowledge of past states may be intrinsically valuable, and because it impairs learning about fixed or slowly changing parameters of the environment. For these reasons, in offline data analysis it is usual to infer on every set of states using the entire time series of observations, an approach known as (fixed-interval) Bayesian smoothing. Unfortunately, however, this is impractical for real agents, since it requires the maintenance and updating of beliefs about an ever-growing set of states. We propose an intermediate approach, finite retrospective inference (FRI), in which agents perform update beliefs about a limited number of past states (Formally, this represents online fixed-lag smoothing with a sliding window). This can be seen as a form of bounded rationality in which agents seek to optimize the accuracy of their beliefs subject to computational and other resource costs. We show through simulation that this approach has the capacity to significantly increase the accuracy of both inference and learning, using a simple variational scheme applied to both randomly generated Hidden Markov models (HMMs), and a specific application of the HMM, in the form of the widely used probabilistic reversal task. Our proposal thus constitutes a theoretical contribution to normative accounts of bounded rationality, which makes testable empirical predictions that can be explored in future work

    The use of carer perspectives and expert consensus to define key components of a biopsychosocial support intervention for stroke carers

Objective: To identify the key components of a biopsychosocial support intervention to improve mental wellbeing for informal stroke carers within the first year post-stroke based on the combined perspectives of experts in the field of psychological care after stroke and informal stroke carers themselves. Methods: After reviewing the existing literature a cross-sectional mixed-methods design was adopted comprising 1) focus groups with informal stroke carers about their psychological support needs, and 2) nominal group technique with academic and clinical stroke care experts to reach consensus on intervention priorities. Transcripts were thematically analyzed and combined with the ranked priorities from the nominal group to identify key components for intervention content. Results: Key themes for informal stroke carers were associated with: 1) changes in relationships, roles, and dynamics; 2) emotional impact and acceptance; 3) drawing on inner resources; 4) looking for information, solutions, and explanations; 5) support from others. The expert nominal group placed priority on eight ranked areas: 1) acknowledging “normal” emotions; 2) education about the effects of a stroke; 3) reactions to loss and adjustment; 4) recognizing signs and symptoms of not coping; 5) knowing how and when to access practical and emotional support; 6) strategies for taking care of own health; 7) dealing with difficult emotions; and 8) problem solving skills. Conclusions: Themes from the informal carer focus groups, and ranked priority areas will inform the development of a biopsychosocial support intervention for stroke carers to be tested in a feasibility randomized controlled trial
