    Validity of a contact mat and accelerometric system to assess countermovement jump from flight time

    Countermovement jump (CMJ) height is an important parameter in physical performance. This study compared CMJ height measured using ChronoJump contact mat (CJ) and Myotest accelerometer (MT) systems with a force platform (FP). Thirty recreationally active adults (32.1 ± 10.4 years, 75.9 ± 12.0 kg, 173.2 ± 6.3 cm) completed a CMJ protocol where height was simultaneously recorded using the three systems. CJ and MT measures were strongly and significant correlated (r = 0.65, 0.66, respectively; p  0.05), yet MT-derived measures were significantly different from those obtained using the FP (p < 0.05). Systematic bias was observed between FP and the CJ and between FP and MT. This study demonstrates the validity of CJ and MT systems for the assessment of CMJ height. Systematic bias and between-device differences in measurement should be considered when interpreting and comparing data from these devices

    Surface flashover of oil-immersed dielectric materials in uniform and non-uniform fields

    The applied electrical fields required to initiate surface flashover of different types of dielectric material immersed in insulating oil have been investigated, by applying impulses of increasing peak voltage until surface flashover occurred. The behavior of the materials in repeatedly over-volted gaps was also analyzed in terms of breakdown mode (some bulk sample breakdown behaviour was witnessed in this regime), time to breakdown, and breakdown voltage. Cylindrical samples of polypropylene, low-density polyethylene, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, and Rexolite, were held between two electrodes immersed in insulating oil, and subjected to average applied electrical fields up to 870 kV/cm. Tests were performed in both uniform- and non-uniform-fields, and with different sample topologies. In applied field measurements, polypropylene required the highest levels of average applied field to initiate flashover in all electrode configurations tested, settling at similar to 600 kV/cm in uniform fields, and similar to 325 kV/cm in non-uniform fields. In over-volted point-plane gaps, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene exhibited the longest pre-breakdown delay times. The results will provide comparative data for system designers for the appropriate choice of dielectric materials to act as insulators for high-voltage, pulsed-power machines

    The suitability of N2 to replace SF6 in a triggered spark-gap switch for pulsed power applications

    The high dielectric strength of sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) when compared with other gases, coupled with safety benefits such as non-flammability and non-toxicity, has seen the widespread use of SF6 for the insulation of switching components. However, SF6 is now widely recognised as a highly damaging greenhouse gas, and investigations of the switching properties of alternative gases to replace SF6 within the bounds of existing system topologies are required. In the present paper, a comparative study has been carried out on a triggered spark-gap of type presently deployed in industrial pulsed-power machines, to determine the suitability of nitrogen (N2) to replace SF6 as the switching medium, without compromising on functionality. Experiments were performed with fast-rising trigger pulses to minimise the delay time to breakdown and jitter, and three distinct operational regimes have been identified for both gases as the pressure inside the switch is increased. The static breakdown characteristics and upper pressure boundaries of operation have been determined for both gases at a range of dc charging voltages. Measurements of the time to breakdown have shown jitters as low as 1.3 ns when operating in N2, highlighting the potential of N2 to replace SF6 without the need for re-design or replacement of the presently used switch

    Impulse-driven surface breakdown data : a Weibull statistical analysis

    Surface breakdown of oil-immersed solids chosen to insulate high-voltage, pulsed-power systems is a problem that can lead to catastrophic failure. Statistical analysis of the breakdown voltages, or times, associated with such liquid-solid interfaces can reveal useful information to aid system designers in the selection of solid materials. Described in this paper are the results of a Weibull statistical analysis, applied to both breakdown-voltage data and time-to-breakdown data generated in gaps consisting of five different solid polymers immersed in mineral oil. Values of the location parameter γ provide an estimate of the applied voltage below which breakdown will not occur, and under uniform-field conditions, γ varied from 192 kV (480 kV/cm) for polypropylene to zero for ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene. Longer times to breakdown were measured for UHMWPE when compared with the other materials. However, high values of the shape parameter β reported in the present paper suggest greater sensitivity to an increase in applied voltage – that is, the probability of breakdown increases more sharply with increasing applied voltage for UHMWPE compared to the other materials. Analysing peak-applied-voltage data, only PP consistently reflected a low value of β across the different sets of test conditions.     Diamagnetic pumping near the base of a stellar convection zone

    The property of inhomogeneous turbulence in conducting fluids to expel large-scale magnetic fields in the direction of decreasing turbulence intensity is shown as important for the magnetic field dynamics near the base of a stellar convection zone. The downward diamagnetic pumping confines a fossil internal magnetic field in the radiative core so that the field geometry is appropriate for formation of the solar tachocline. For the stars of solar age, the diamagnetic confinement is efficient only if the ratio of turbulent magnetic diffusivity of the convection zone to the (microscopic or turbulent) diffusivity of the radiative interiour is larger than 10^5. Confinement in younger stars require still larger diffusivity ratio. The observation of persistent magnetic structures on young solar-type stars can thus provide evidences for the nonexistence of tachoclines in stellar interiors and on the level of turbulence in radiative cores.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Body Composition of Utah Highway Patrol Officers: No Difference Between Air Displacement Plethysmography and Alternative Tools for Measurement and Prediction.

    Topics in Exercise Science and Kinesiology Volume 3: Issue 1, Article 6, 2022. Different techniques exist for examining body composition. The purpose of this study was to examine differences in body fat percentage as measured by air displacement plethysmography (ADP), body adiposity index (BAI), bioelectrical impedance (BIA), a body mass index conversion equation (BMID), and skinfolds (SKF). Twenty-one male Utah Highway Patrol Officers participated in this study (age 35.19 ± 10.32 years, 1.79 ± 0.09 m tall, 92.20 ± 14.56 kg in weight, and 105.52 ± 10.01 cm hip circumference). All measurements were taken during a single visit and performed in the same order for all participants beginning with BIA, followed by ADP, and SKF. The BAI and BMI conversion equation were later calculated. For ADP and SKF the Brozek equation was used to convert body density to percent body fat (%BF). No significant differences were found among the different measurement techniques. No significant correlations were found between ADP, BAI, BIA, BMID, and SKF. Bland-Altman plots revealed small levels of bias, however, the upper and lower limits of agreement were large for all measures. Prediction equations such as BAI and BMID may be cheaper and faster for assessing large populations when compared with traditional laboratory techniques. This study found no significant different among the measurement techniques. Despite the non-significant differences, the authors suggest using a single measurement technique and not using techniques interchangeably

    Detectors—The ongoing revolution in scanning transmission electron microscopy and why this important to material characterization

    Detectors are revolutionizing possibilities in scanning transmission electron microscopy because of the advent of direct electron detectors that record at a high quantum efficiency and with a high frame rate. This allows the whole back focal plane to be captured for each pixel in a scan and the dataset to be processed to reveal whichever features are of interest. There are many possible uses for this advance of direct relevance to understanding the nano- and atomic-scale structure of materials and heterostructures. This article gives our perspective of the current state of the field and some of the directions where it is likely to go next. First, a wider overview of the recent work in this area is given before two specific examples of its application are given: one is imaging strain in thin films and the other one is imaging changes in periodicity along the beam direction as a result of the formation of an ordered structure in an epitaxial thin film. This is followed by an outlook that presents future possible directions in this rapidly expanding field
