    Miniature modular microwave end-to-end receiver

    An end-to-end microwave receiver system contained in a single miniature hybrid package mounted on a single heatsink is presented. It includes an input end connected to a microwave receiver antenna and an output end which produces a digital count proportional to the amplitude of a signal of a selected microwave frequency band received at the antenna and corresponding to one of the water vapor absorption lines near frequencies of 20 GHz or 30 GHz. The hybrid package is on the order of several centimeters in length and a few centimeters in height and width. The package includes an L-shaped carrier having a base surface, a vertical wall extending up from the base surface and forming a corner therewith, and connection pins extending through the vertical wall. Modular blocks rest on the base surface against the vertical wall and support microwave monolithic integrated circuits on top surfaces thereof connected to the external connection pins. The modular blocks lie end-to-end on the base surface so as to be modularly removable by sliding along the base surface beneath the external connection pins away from the vertical wall

    The authors discuss recent developments in Florida law in the area of products liability. The distinctions between the three theories of recovery in products liability actions, negligence, implied warranty and strict liability, are clarified through close and detailed analysis. The authors prefer strict liability to the other two causes of action because of its lessened burden of proof on plaintiffs and its less intricate analysis. The examination of case law, however, leads the authors to conclude that the courts are often applying the strict liability doctrine incorrectly

    Magnetoresistance Dynamics in Superparamagnetic Co-Fe- B Nanodots

    Individual disk-shaped Co-Fe-B nanodots are driven into a superparamagnetic state by a spin-transfer torque, and their time-dependent magnetoresistance fluctuations are measured as a function of current. A thin layer of oxidation at the edges has a dramatic effect on the magnetization dynamics. A combination of experimental results and atomistic spin simulations shows that pinning to oxide grains can reduce the likelihood that fluctuations lead to reversal, and can even change the easy-axis direction. Exchange-bias loop shifts and training effects are observed even at room temperature after brief exposure to small fields. The results have implications for studies of core-shell nanoparticles and small magnetic tunnel junctions and spin-torque oscillators

    Based on the Controlled Environment Life Support System (CELSS) production of only four crops, wheat, white potatoes, soybeans, and sweet potatoes; a crew size of twelve; a daily planting/harvesting regimen; and zero-gravity conditions, estimates were made on the quantity of food that would need to be grown to provide adequate nutrition; and the corresponding amount of biomass that would result. Projections were made of the various types of products that could be made from these crops, the unit operations that would be involved, and what menu capability these products could provide. Equipment requirements to perform these unit operations were screened to identify commercially available units capable of operating (or being modified to operate) under CELSS/zero-gravity conditions. Concept designs were developed for those equipment needs for which no suitable units were commercially available. Prototypes of selected concept designs were constructed and tested on a laboratory scale, as were selected commercially available units. This report discusses the practical considerations taken into account in the various design alternatives, some of the many product/process factors that relate to equipment development, and automation alternatives. Recommendations are made on both general and specific areas in which it was felt additional investigation would benefit CELSS missions

    Experimental Study of the Inductance of Pinned Vortices in Superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-d Films

    Using a two-coil mutual inductance method, we have measured the complex resistivity, rho_v(T,Be), of pinned vortices in c-axis pulsed laser deposited YBa2Cu3O7-d films with magnetic field Be applied perpendicular to the film. At low frequencies, (<100 kHz), rho_v is inductive and is inversely proportional to the Labusch parameter, the average vortex pinning force constant, kappa_exp. The observed weakening of kappa_exp with Be is consistent with a simple model based on linear pinning defects. Adding classical thermal fluctuations to the model in a simple way describes the observed linear T dependence of rho_v, below ~15 K and provides reasonable values for the effective radius (.3 nm to >.8 nm) of the defects and the depth of the pinning potential. The success of this model implies that thermal supercurrent (phase) fluctuations have their full classical amplitude down to 5 K for frequencies below the characteristic depinning frequency. To date, no sufficient theory exists to explain the data between ~15 K and the vortex glass melting temperature.Comment: 31 pages, 8 figures. Subm. to PR
