    Credit cards: use and consumer attitudes, 1970-2000

    From modest origins in the 1950s as a convenient way for the relatively well-to-do to settle restaurant and department store purchases without carrying cash, credit cards have become a ubiquitous financial product held by households in all economic strata. Since the late 1960s, much federal legislation has been enacted to ensure that consumers have the protections and information they need to use this widely available form of open-end credit wisely. Nevertheless, concerns persist about whether consumers fully understand the costs and implications of using credit cards and whether credit cards have encouraged widespread overindebtedness. Drawing on information from commercial banks, credit reporting agencies, and surveys of consumers, this article explores these issues as well as changes over the past three decades in consumer impressions of their card-using experiences and of conditions in the marketplace.Credit cards ; Consumer behavior

    The equity that has accumulated in homes is one of the largest components of U.S. household wealth. In recent years, many homeowners have borrowed large amounts against that equity, frequently to finance new consumption expenditures or pay down outstanding consumer debt. In view of the growing importance of home equity credit in household finances, the Federal Reserve has for a number of years participated in nationwide surveys of the use of home equity loans.     Performance Assessment of Diffuse Optical Spectroscopic Imaging Instruments in a 2-Year Multicenter Breast Cancer Trial

    We present a framework for characterizing the performance of an experimental imaging technology, diffuse optical spectroscopic imaging (DOSI), in a 2-year multicenter American College of Radiology Imaging Network (ACRIN) breast cancer study (ACRIN-6691). DOSI instruments combine broadband frequency-domain photon migration with time-independent near-infrared (650 to 1000 nm) spectroscopy to measure tissue absorption and reduced scattering spectra and tissue hemoglobin, water, and lipid composition. The goal of ACRIN-6691 was to test the effectiveness of optically derived imaging endpoints in predicting the final pathologic response of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). Sixty patients were enrolled over a 2-year period at participating sites and received multiple DOSI scans prior to and during 3- to 6-month NAC. The impact of three sources of error on accuracy and precision, including different operators, instruments, and calibration standards, was evaluated using a broadband reflectance standard and two different solid tissue-simulating optical phantoms. Instruments showed \u3c 0.0010 mm−1 (10.3%) and 0.06 mm−1 (4.7%) deviation in broadband absorption and reduced scattering, respectively, over the 2-year duration of ACRIN-6691. These variations establish a useful performance criterion for assessing instrument stability. The proposed procedures and tests are not limited to DOSI; rather, they are intended to provide methods to characterize performance of any instrument used in translational optical imaging

    The Production of Z′Z' Associated With Photons or Jets as a Probe of New Gauge Boson Couplings

    We examine the production of a new Z′Z' gauge boson in association with photons or jets at future hadron supercolliders as a probe of its couplings to fermions. Associated jet production is found to be rather insensitive to these couplings and suffers from large uncertainties as well as substantial backgrounds. On the other hand, the ratio of rates for associated photon Z′Z' production to that of conventional Z′Z' production has a rather clean signature (once appropriate cuts are made), and is found to be quite sensitive to the choice of extended electroweak model, while being simultaneously insensitive to structure function uncertainties and QCD corrections. Rates at both the SSC and LHC are significant for Z′Z' masses in the 1 TeV range.Comment: 14pp, 6 figs(not included), LaTex, ANL-HEP-PR-92-5

    Recurrent de novo point mutations in lamin A cause Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome

    Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by features reminiscent of marked premature ageing(1,2). Here, we present evidence of mutations in lamin A (LMNA) as the cause of this disorder. The HGPS gene was initially localized to chromosome 1q by observing two cases of uniparental isodisomy of 1q - the inheritance of both copies of this material from one parent - and one case with a 6-megabase paternal interstitial deletion. Sequencing of LMNA, located in this interval and previously implicated in several other heritable disorders(3,4), revealed that 18 out of 20 classical cases of HGPS harboured an identical de novo ( that is, newly arisen and not inherited) single-base substitution, G608G( GGC > GGT), within exon 11. One additional case was identified with a different substitution within the same codon. Both of these mutations result in activation of a cryptic splice site within exon 11, resulting in production of a protein product that deletes 50 amino acids near the carboxy terminus. Immunofluorescence of HGPS fibroblasts with antibodies directed against lamin A revealed that many cells show visible abnormalities of the nuclear membrane.
