    Spatiotemporal Distribution of Waterfowl Disease Outbreaks in Kansas, USA

    Causes and impacts of disease outbreaks in wild bird populations are rarely studied beyond documentation of large epizootic events. In Kansas, USA, a central disease surveillance and reporting protocol currently does not exist within the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism, which has led to a lack of available knowledge of disease occurrences that could be used to predict and manage future outbreaks. We compiled historic records of documented waterbird disease outbreaks in Kansas from 1967–2014 and related the frequency of outbreaks with light geese (Ross’s goose [Anser rossii]; Snow goose [A. caerulescens]) populations from 1970–2014. We found 32 reports across 16 counties that documented various outbreaks of avian cholera, avian botulism, aspergillosis, renal coccidiosis, West Nile, aflatoxicosis, and mycotoxicosis across multiple waterbird taxa. Avian cholera and avian botulism represented nearly 70% of documented disease outbreaks. Frequency of disease outbreaks increased across the time period with a positive relationship between annual Midwinter Waterfowl Survey counts of light geese and number of reported of avian cholera outbreaks in Kansas. Changes in the continental abundance and distribution of light geese has resulted in increasing residence times in Kansas during winter, potentially increasing risk and severity of avian cholera outbreaks. Disease mitigation efforts by the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT) should strategically plan for future avian disease outbreaks

    Bio-inspired Distributed Strain and Airflow Sensing for Small Unmanned Air Vehicle Flight Control

    Flying animals such as birds, bats and insects all have extensive arrays of sensory or- gans distributed in their wings which provide them with detailed information about the airflow over their wings and the forces generated by this airflow. Using two small modified unmanned air vehicle platforms (UAVs), one with a distributed array of 12 strain gauge sensors and one with a chord-wise array of 4 pressure sensors, we have examined the dis- tribution of the strain and air pressure signals over the UAV wings in relation to flight conditions, including wind tunnel testing, indoor free flight and outdoor free flight. We have also characterised the signals provided by controlled gusts and natural turbulence. These sensors were then successfully used to control roll motions in the case of the strain sensor platform and pitch motions in the case of the pressure sensor platform. These results suggest that distributed mechanosensing and airflow sensing both offer advantages beyond traditional flight control based on rigid body state estimation using inertial sensing. These advantages include stall detection, gust alleviation and model-free measurement of aerodynamic forces. These advantages are likely to be important in the development of future aircraft with increasing numbers of degrees of freedom both through flexibility and active morphing.</p

    Termination detection for fine-grained message-passing architectures

    Barrier primitives provided by standard parallel programming APIs are the primary means by which applications implement global synchronisation. Typically these primitives are fully-committed to synchronisation in the sense that, once a barrier is entered, synchronisation is the only way out. For message-passing applications, this raises the question of what happens when a message arrives at a thread that already resides in a barrier. Without a satisfactory answer, barriers do not interact with message-passing in any useful way. In this paper, we propose a new refutable barrier primitive that combines with message-passing to form a simple, expressive, efficient, well-defined API. It has a clear semantics based on termination detection, and supports the development of both globally-synchronous and asynchronous parallel applications. To evaluate the new primitive, we implement it in a prototype large-scale message-passing machine with 49,152 RISC-V threads distributed over 48 FPGAs. We show that hardware support for the primitive leads to a highly-efficient implementation, capable of synchronisation rates that are an order-of-magnitude higher than what is achievable in software. Using the primitive, we implement synchronous and asynchronous versions of a range of applications, observing that each version can have significant advantages over the other, depending on the application.     Trends in Spinal Surgery for Pott\u27s Disease (2000-2016): An Overview and Bibliometric Study.

    Study Design: Systematic review. Objectives: (1) What are the surgical indications? Have they changed over time since the year 2000? (2) What is the current surgical approaches of choice? Have they changed over time since the year 2000? Do they vary by geographical region? (3) What are the most common outcome measures following surgery? Methods: Electronic databases and reference lists of key articles were searched from database inception from January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2016 to identify studies specifically evaluating surgical indications, current surgical approaches, and outcome measures for spinal tuberculosis. Results: Six randomized controlled trials were identified from our search (1 excluded: no surgical arm identified after review) Neurological deficit, instability and deformity were common indications identified. Surgical approach included predominantly anterior for cervical spine and posterior for thoracic and lumbar spine. Combined approach was preferred in pediatric cases. Degree of deformity correction, neurological outcomes, and fusion formed the main bases of assessing surgical outcomes. Conclusions: Majority of the current literature is from South Asia. The presence of neurological compromise, deformity, and instability were the primary criteria for surgical intervention. The preferred approach varied with the anatomical region of the spine in adults. Outcome measures predominantly involved deformity correction, neurological deficit, and fusion

    Food, Eating, and Happy Aging: The Perceptions of Older Chinese People

    China's government and its people have for a long time focused on food security for its population as one of the most important issues in economic and social development. Many older people in China have lived in times when food security was not stable. Thus, while food has a central position in Chinese culture for all Chinese people, it is of particular pertinence to older people. In this paper we explore the meaning of food and eating in the lives of older Chinese people in China and how it contributes to healthy, thus happy aging. Focus groups and qualitative interviews were used in this study. Participants were recruited from the rural Yongfu Province of Southwest China, and the urban Fangzhuang and Haidan districts in Beijing. Forty-two participants were recruited aged 62–83 years of age. All focus groups and interviews were conducted in Mandarin and audiotaped with the participants' permission. Audio-tapes were transcribed by a Chinese speaking researcher and then were translated into English. Data were analyzed continuously and comparatively, transcripts were coded, and themes and sub-themes were identified. The initial analysis and interpretation were then presented and discussed at a workshop with all the authors. Two major themes emerged—the quantity of food and the quality of food required to have a happy old age. Participants discussed the desire to eat “until you are full” because of their experiences of famine during childhood. However, they also believed that as an older person they should eat less for their health, particularly less high fat foods. The importance of the food quality and food affordability was also discussed. Grain and meat were characterized as “good” foods and important in their diets for a happy old age. The participants, especially those from urban areas, were concerned with food safety. The high cultural importance of food for older Chinese in China was confirmed in this study. Social and economic lifespan experiences continue to impact on the food and eating attitudes and practices of older Chinese. The food related life experiences of older Chinese in China are quite different from younger Chinese and health promotion messaging needs to be informed by these unique perspectives in order to maximize its effectiveness
