A program has been completed to print out the radiance values for any specified combination of the four MSS bands for a specified sector of an image. A program to map intensities for any band is being written. An investigation of the characteristics of cities in the Brevard County area, as seen by ERTS-1, has been started. Investigation has not been completed, however, results initially obtained are presented. A Digicol viewer was used to determine the relative reflectance of cities (and other developed sectors) in the area. This was done by a combination of two methods: (1) varying the offset control so that the brightest spot appeared first, followed by the second brightest spot; and (2) reading the relative light transmissions at selected positions. A band 5 image was used and the results, in order of maximum reflectance apparent within the sector, are given

Interleukin-17 is required for control of chronic lung infection caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Chronic pulmonary infection with Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a feature of cystic fibrosis (CF) and other chronic lung diseases. Cytokines of the IL-17 family have been proposed as important in the host response to P. aeruginosa infection through augmenting antibacterial immune responses, although their pro-inflammatory effect may contribute to lung damage that occurs as a result of chronic infection. We set out to explore the role of IL-17 in the host response to chronic P. aeruginosa infection. We used a murine model of chronic pulmonary infection with CF-related strains of P. aeruginosa. We demonstrate that IL-17 cytokine signaling is essential for survival and prevention of chronic infection at 2 weeks post-inoculation using two different P. aeruginosa strains. Following infection, there was a marked expansion of cells within mediastinal lymph nodes, comprised mainly of innate lymphoid cells (ILCs); ∼90% of IL-17 producing cells had markers consistent with Group 3 ILCs. A smaller percentage of IL-17+ cells had markers consistent with a B1 phenotype. In lung homogenates 14 days following infection, there was a significant expansion of IL-17+ cells – about 50% of these were CD3+, split equally between CD4+ Th17 cells and γδ T cells, while the CD3- IL-17+ cells were almost exclusively Group 3 ILCs. Further experiments with B cell deficient mice showed that B cell production of IL-17 or natural antibodies did not provide any defence against chronic P. aeruginosa infection. Thus, IL-17 rather than antibody is a key element in host defence against chronic pulmonary infection with P. aeruginosa

The author has identified the following significant results. Lake Apopka and three lakes downstream of it (Dora, Eustis, and Griffin) are in an advanced state of eutrophication with high algal concentrations. This feature has shown up consistently on ERTS-1 images in the form of a characteristic water color for those lakes. As expected, EREP photographs also show a characteristic color for those lakes. What was not expected is that Lake Griffin shows a clear pattern of this coloration. Personnel familiar with the lake believe that the photograph does, indeed, show an algal bloom. It is reported that the algal concentration is often significantly higher in the southern portion of the lake. What the photograph shows that was not otherwise known is the pattern of the algal bloom. A similar, but less pronounced, effect is seen in Lake Tohopekaliga. Personnel stationed at Kissimmee reported that there was an algal bloom on that lake at the time of the EREP pass and that its extent corresponded approximately to that shown on the photograph. Again, the EREP photograph gives information about the extent of the bloom that could not be obtained practically by sampling. ERTS-1 images give some indication of this algal distribution on Lake Griffin in some cases, but are inconclusive

The author has identified the following significant results. Computer classification, accompanied by human interpretation and manual simplification, can produce land use maps which are useful on a regional, county, and for special purpose, a city basis. Change monitoring is potentially an effective application of such data at all planning levels

Modelling the ability of legumes to suppress weeds

    Get PDF
The ability of different legume cover crops to suppress annual weeds during the early establishment phase was compared using a simulation model of inter-plant competition and field observations. Height, partitioning parameters, extinction coefficients, crop density and time of emergence were recorded for 11 species sown in monocultures. A naturally occurring population of fat hen (Chenopodium album) was present on the experiment. The competition model was run to compare the expected suppressive ability of the different species on this weed. Samples of C. album were also taken from each plot immediately prior to cutting to provide some empirical observations. Predicted suppressive ability was correlated with seed size and height with large seeded, tall species such as white sweet clover being the most competitive. However, these species may recover poorly from mowing compromising their potential to suppress perennial weeds and a mixture of contrasting species may provide the optimum weed control

Some Studies on the Seeds and Fruits of Berberidaceae

Although several papers bearing on the anatomy of different organs of plants of this order have been published, no one has studied the comparative anatomy of the seeds. It gives us great pleasure to acknowledge the kindness shown us by Drs. B. L. Robinson, J. K. Small, Mr. G. H. Hicks, and Prof. C. S. Sargent for favors shown us in the way of obtaining material for study and the determination of some species; the free access to and use of the library of the Missouri Botanical Garden, through the courtesy of the director, Dr. Trelease, and, finally, the faithful work in drawing the seeds and fruits and preparing the microscopic details for the engraver by Miss Charlotte M. King
