Feeding strategies in the larval rearing of prawns
In the early life history of extremely fecund • fishes
and shellfishes food and feeding is the most important factor.
Availability adequate right kind of food in the growing
environment is essential for the survival and growth of the
larvae. Because of the complex life history of prawns with
different larval stages and sub-stages and the process of
metamorphosis requires lot of energy, identification of
suitable feed and feeding techniques becomes very important
in the larval rearing of prawns. In recent years significant
achievements have been made in the development suitable diets
and evolving feeding strategies in the prawn hatchery techniques
worldwide
Quantifying Economic Losses due to Milk Fever in Dairy Farms
Milk fever, a metabolic disease, affects dairy animals usually within one or two days after calving, resulting in a huge reduction in milk production and thus becomes economically most important. This study, conducted in five milkshed districts of Tamil Nadu, has estimated the economic losses arising from milk fever, based on the data collected from a random sample of 557 milk fever affected bovines (516 cows and 41 she buffaloes) during 2005-08. For assessing economic losses caused by milk fever, cost of medicines, veterinarian’s fee, cost of additional labour utilized, loss due to reduction in milk output, cost of animals dead and culled have been considered. The prevalence of milk fever has been found 13.67 per cent in cows and 11.99 per cent in buffaloes across the study districts. The total loss has been found as Rs 1,068 per affected cow and Rs 665 per buffalo. Taking into account the observed prevalence of milk fever, the population of milch cows and buffaloes and the per animal loss due to milk fever has been estimated to be of Rs 40.62 crore in the state, which is a substantial damage to the dairy farming community. Some suggestions for prevention and management of milk fever have been given in the study.Agricultural and Food Policy,

Most of the respondents 29(32.22%) used the First-year students and fewer respondents from Fourth-year students. All of the respondents 90(100%) used the awareness of ICT and Internet Literacy. Most of the respondents 34(37.77%) used the three years’ Experience in handling the internet and fewer respondents from Less than one year. 25(27.77%) of the respondents using internet study purpose; 20(22.22%) of the respondents use the exchange idea purpose and 12(13.33) of the respondents use Research and development purpose; most of the respondents 60(66.66%) use the Google Chrome; 14(15.55%) Others, 10(11.11%) Yahoo; most of the respondents 18(20%) used the engineering e-database IEEE Xplore and fewer respondents from e-database NTIS; most of the respondents 86(95.55%) used the Ms Office and other basic skills of Computer Literacy; 85(94.44%) Laptop & Tablets; 83(92.55%) Basic hardware usages like connecting laptop with projector and 68(75.55%) Using software packages; 78(86.66%) of students are not aware of security risks in sharing of personal information in Net and 12(13.33%) of students are aware of security risks. 81(90%) of students can Access needed information, 73(81.11%) of students are Formulating the need of information and 48(53.33%) of students are not skilled enough to use the accessed information effectively and efficiently
Lipid requirements of milkfish {Chanos chanos) fry
Feeding axperiments conducted in the laboratory on the fry of milkfish,
Chanos chanos, with purified diets containing graded levels of lipids showed that
6%-lipid level induces the optimum food intake, maximum growth and
best utilization of food and protein. Whereas the lipid levels higher than this
optimum have led to increased fat deposition in the tissues, the lower levels
have caused reduced growth and poor utilization of food and protein.
An inverse relationship is observed between the moisture and lipid contents of the
experimental fish. The diet containing 6% lipid has provided the fish with 1.09%
saturated fatty acids, 1.56% mono-unsaturated acids, and 3.195% of poly-unsaturated
fatty acids. The w6/w3 ratio of the diet was 2.43/0.762
Continuous culture of cladoceran, Moina sp. for rearing of postlarval prawns
A low-cost method for large scale culture of the fresh water cladoceran Moina sp. has been evolved. Moina is used in the frozen condition to feed the postlarvae of penaeid prawns reared at the NPCL of CMFRI
