    Advances in Maintenance of Ports and Waterways: Water Injection Dredging

    The main objective of this chapter is to demonstrate developments in port maintenance techniques that have been intensively tested in major European ports. As regular port maintenance is highly expensive, port authorities are considering alternative strategies. Water Injection Dredging (WID) can be one of the most efficient alternatives. Using this dredging method, density currents near the bed are created by fluidizing fine-grained sediments. The fluidized sediment can leave the port channels and be transported away from the waterways via the natural force of gravity. WID actions can be successfully coupled with the tidal cycle for extra effectiveness. In addition, WID is combined with another strategy to reduce maintenance dredging: the nautical bottom approach, which enables the vessel to navigate through the WID-induced fluid mud layer. The nautical bottom approach uses the density or the yield stress of sediment to indicate the navigability after WID rather than the absolute depth to the sediment bed. Testing WID-based port maintenance requires thorough preparation. Over the years modeling and monitoring tools have been developed in order to test and optimize WID operations.     Waiting List Dynamics and Lung Transplantation Outcomes After Introduction of the Lung Allocation Score in The Netherlands

    The Netherlands was the third country to adopt the lung allocation score (LAS) for national allocation of donor lungs in April 2014. Evaluations of the introduction of the LAS in the United States and Germany showed mainly beneficial effects, including increased survival after transplantation. Methods: Data for transplant candidates from 2010 to 2019 were retrieved from the Dutch Transplant Foundation database. Diagnosis categories and outcomes were compared between the periods before and after the introduction of the LAS. Time-dependent Cox regression and Fine-Gray analyses were performed to compare the chance for transplantation before and after introduction of the LAS. Results: The cohort comprised 1276 patients. After introduction of the LAS, the annual number of transplantations and waiting list mortality did not change. The proportion of patients on the waiting list and transplanted patients with pulmonary fibrosis increased (25%-37%, P < 0.001; 22%-39%, P < 0.001). The chance of transplantation increased significantly for patients with pulmonary fibrosis after introduction of the LAS (hazard ratio 1.9 [95% confidence interval 1.4-2.9]). Patients who died on the waiting list had an increased LAS compared to the time of placement on the waiting list, reflecting clinical deterioration. This was not the case in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (P < 0.001). Overall survival was similar after introduction of the LAS (5-y survival 68%, compared to 74% [P = 0.171]). Conclusions: After the introduction of the LAS in The Netherlands, an increased proportion of transplantations was performed for patients with pulmonary fibrosis.     Enhanced Enterovirus D68 Replication in Neuroblastoma Cells Is Associated with a Cell Culture-Adaptive Amino Acid Substitution in VP1

    Since its emergence in the United States in 2014, enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) has been and is associated with severe respiratory diseases and acute flaccid myelitis. Even though EV-D68 has been shown to replicate in different neuronal cells in vitro, it is currently poorly understood which viral factors contribute to the ability to replicate efficiently in cells of the central nervous system and whether this feature is a clade-specific feature. Here, we determined the replication kinetics of clinical EV-D68 isolates from (sub)clades A, B1, B2, B3, and D1 in human neuroblastoma cells (SK-N-SH). Subsequently, we compared sequences to identify viral factors associated with increased viral replication. All clinical isolates replicated in SK-N-SH cells, although there was a large difference in efficiency. Efficient replication of clinical isolates was associated with an amino acid substitution at position 271 of VP1 (E271K), which was acquired during virus propagation in vitro. Recognition of heparan sulfate in addition to sialic acids was associated with increased attachment, infection, and replication. Removal of heparan sulfate resulted in a decrease in attachment, internalization, and replication of viruses with E271K. Taken together, our study suggests that the replication kinetics of EV-D68 isolates in SKN-SH cells is not a clade-specific feature. However, recognition of heparan sulfate as an additional receptor had a large effect on phenotypic characteristics in vitro. These observations emphasize the need to compare sequences from virus stocks with clinical isolates in order to retrieve phenotypic characteristics from original virus isolates.     Rheology of cohesive sediments: comparison between a natural and an artificial mud

    Concentrated cohesive sediment suspensions exhibit strongly non-Newtonian and time-dependent behaviour caused by particle interactions, which complicates the prediction of their strain or shear rate response to applied forces. In this paper the rheological properties of both China clay, an artificial mud, and Caland channel mud, a natural mud, are investigated. Four types of experiments are involved: equilibrium flow curves, stepwise changes in shear rate to investigate the time-scale of structural changes, experiments in which the increase in yield stress with recovery time after structural destruction was measured, and harmonic oscillation experiments to investigate the visco-elastic behaviour of mud at low strains. For these measurements both shear rate and shear stress controlled instruments were used. Equilibrium flow curves revealed strong shearthinning behaviour for China clay, which was much less observed for Caland channel mud. Experimental results are described in terms of a thixotropic model including two structural parameters to account for structural changes within the material, one to describe short-term changes when the material is flowing, another to describe long-term changes when the material is at rest. From experiments with stepwise changes in shear rate it followed that the time-scale of structural changes is in the order of seconds. Both materials showed a yield stress, Caland channel mud being the more cohesive mud. Yield stress measurements as a function of rest time after pre-shearing showed that the time-scale for the build-up of an interconnected aggregate structure is in the order of 104-105 s. From harmonic oscillation experiments it can be concluded that the range within which muds exhibit linear visco-elastic behaviour is limited to strains smaller than approximately 1%

    Effects of mud supply on large-scale estuary morphology and development over centuries to millennia

    Alluvial river estuaries consist largely of sand but are typically flanked by mudflats and salt marshes. The analogy with meandering rivers that are kept narrower than braided rivers by cohesive floodplain formation raises the question of how large-scale estuarine morphology and the late Holocene development of estuaries are affected by cohesive sediment. In this study we combine sand and mud transport processes and study their interaction effects on morphologically modelled estuaries on centennial to millennial timescales. The numerical modelling package Delft3D was applied in 2-DH starting from an idealised convergent estuary. The mixed sediment was modelled with an active layer and storage module with fluxes predicted by the Partheniades–Krone relations for mud and Engelund–Hansen for sand. The model was subjected to a range of idealised boundary conditions of tidal range, river discharge, waves and mud input. The model results show that mud is predominantly stored in mudflats on the side of the estuary. Marine mud supply only influences the mouth of the estuary, whereas fluvial mud is distributed along the whole estuary. Coastal waves stir up mud and remove the tendency to form muddy coastlines and the formation of mudflats in the downstream part of the estuary. Widening continues in estuaries with only sand, while mud supply leads to a narrower constant width and reduced channel and bar dynamics. This self-confinement eventually leads to a dynamic equilibrium in which lateral channel migration and mudflat expansion are balanced on average. However, for higher mud concentrations, higher discharge and low tidal amplitude, the estuary narrows and fills to become a tidal delta

    The effect of solid-phase composition on the drying behavior of Markermeer sediment

    We studied the drying behavior of slurries of Markermeer sediments in the Netherlands having different solid compositions. Natural processes such as sand?mud segregation and oxidation of organic matter were mimicked to analyze the effect of changes in sediment composition. Evaporation experiments were performed with soft slurry samples using the Hyprop setup. Soil water retention curves (SWRCs) and hydraulic conductivity curves (HCCs) were determined as a function of the water ratio (WR, defined as volume of water/volume of solids). The sediment remained close to saturation until the end of the experiments. The Atterberg limits reduced significantly after sediment treatment involving drying at 50 °C, rewetting, and chemical oxidation. Furthermore, the oxidized sediment lost capacity to retain water. The SWRCs of sandy and oxidized clays were steeper, and fine-textured sediments showed large water ratios. At low matric suctions, the water retention capacity of the upper sediment samples containing more labile organic matter was larger than that of the sediment underneath. Clear correlations were found between van Genuchten parameters and the degree of degradation of the organic matter. The hydraulic conductivity of fine-textured samples with less labile organics was larger. The results give insight into the drying behavior of Markermeer sediment, currently used to build wetlands
